$20 minimum wage in California: blessing or curse hurting 1000's?

Ойын-сауық

Everyone knows how expensive it is to live in California. It is no secret. The cost of housing, extra taxes and fees on gasoline and more have made it difficult for those working at low paying jobs to afford the basic necessities. Politicians are touting the new $20 an hour minimum wage for fast food workers as a magic bullet that will greatly improve the lives of those workers. But I ask, "Is this actually heat is happening ir just a publicity grabbing scam that has actually harmed as many workers as it has helped given the reported layoffs and cut in hours for many of these workers. Let me know in the comments what you think.

My 1st job in 1966 was a fast food place. The only full times employees were the managers and 1 or 2 daytime employees. Everyone else were part timers. Mostly high schoolers or someone just looking for a few extra dollars. I don't feel fast food restaurants were geared for all employees to be full time. Used to be you could get a burger, fries & drink for under a dollar As time as going by you don't see the school kids working fast food liked they used too. The fast food employees now seem to be older and even seniors who can'tget by on their social security checks. Times change and not always for the better..

Wages going up for some people doesn't help those that their income doesn't go up but all cost of living goes up. Groceries, rents, utilities, and all other expenses. I'm on a fixed income so the higher expenses aren't covered by a raise as in many other people's cases.

I would rather help people one at a time as a income acrossnfolks in need and actually see those lives be changed for the better. And, be an irritant in the eye to these worthless politicians in my spare time. Sometimes even shaming them into actually doing something helpful like what happened recently after continuously bugging a city council. LoL

Are the executives cutting their salary and perks? No, they always cut down on customer service and worker hours. It's just playing one group of people against another, worker against customer, for the benefit of owners. If the hotel charges extra, that's their decision, maybe they need to look at how they run the whole organisation and not blame actual workers and customers.

Executives have a greater responsibility in the performance of their businesses. If their stores don’t reach expected revenue numbers, they get fired. If their stores meet expectations, executives get awarded accordingly. Higher skilled workers get more compensation than lower skill workers in a capitalist society. There will always be a particular 'BOTTOM LINE" corporations are going to want, and one way or the other they WILL get it, no matter how much pain is inflicted on the community of workers and patrons. Ironically, I think there will come a point, where the cost of fast food will be priced out of reach of the average consumer. For Richard and I to each get a chicken sandwich and ONE small fry @ Carl's Jr is a few cents shy of $20. That is ridiculous and we are buying a lot less often.

The reality is there is a massive supply of unskilled labour. At the same time there is a massive shortage of trade skilled labour. Most people think that a home builder trade, or a plumber isn't 'good enough'. When you have 'free' or tax (working people) education for courses in psychology and social studies that only fuels political dependency and little to no support for working jobs. The ones that want free labour, are the ones that want free housing. At least the person who makes the food, can become a plumber or an electrician without too much effort. But the one who wants free food will be the ones to enslave working people. There has to be some middle ground, and there is none.

I had the opportunity to move to management as I grew up, but I left for a career in bookkeeping. The cost of fast food in California has increased over 150%. I make a decent living, but now can't afford the prices. Good thing is it force me to cook. I went to Taco Bell yesterday for the first time since the increase to $20/hr. It only had three patrons and instead of someone taking your order they have a screen where you order. We have elected the wrong kind of politicians. They just look after themselves and avoid making decisions. The move to RVs is a huge opportunity to convert public lands to low fee basic services for working van living. Instead they left airbnb unregulated (many if not all politicians own several properties) that drive up house prices and rental costs. Now unregulated venture capitol investments are buying up whole cities of housing fueled by low interest rates. They don't regulate them. Those that are owning rental have grouped online to stop competition and goes unregulated. The politicians we elect are only looking after themselves and are unable and unwilling to be accountable to the public they serve and the voters don't complain so long as they get a few crumbs from their selfishness.

So now what should be an automatic part of the stay we are often charged for. Also many have "resort fees". This is a charge for newspapers, which I don't want and other mystery charges. Some states and cities have raised their own minimum wage.) People still can't afford apartments and the necessities to live on $18-$20 hr especially if they don't have full time work with benefits. In the 1980's (in my early 30's) I worked full time, had a decent apartment, bought a small car and had health insurance through my employer and I had enough for all my other expenses and extra to go out with friends one day a week. What we are experiencing now is outrageous ! Municpaities, cities, towns, are now making homelessness a crime ! Yes there are plenty of buildings and unused motel's that can be made into affordable housing or pay according to your income housing. (Tax Credit housing receives funding from the government to pay part of low income people's rent and Sec 8 HUD will pay ad lower your rent more, if you qualify).

The problem is that the next tier of jobs people used to move to from the fast food minimum wage jobs no longer exists. I remember when small manufacturing plants could be found just about everywhere. Even in the super small town I live in there was a Peerless toilet factory where people could find a decent paying job. It's been gone for a long time now. I also remember when retail was a legitimate pathway out of poverty. Now retail jobs are low tier jobs too. At today's wages, there is no such thing as affordable housing. It costs X amount of dollars to build a house, and it takes X amount of dollars to buy and pay for it. Until this country restores that second tier of better paying jobs people can move move into from the lowest tier of jobs, these problems are only going to get worse.

She was working there before this law was passed. I’ve seen signs at fast food restaurants offering $18 - 19 an hour because they couldn’t find enough employees. Now owners are laying off employees because they have to pay their employees a reasonable wages????

I'm not saying it is the right thing to do but I am saying that th4sr large companies are not going to absorb the increase. They can't pass it all in to customers or they won't have any. So, they make up the loss by cutting employee hours, eliminating positions like the delivery drivers at Pizza Hut, and adding more Kiosks.and cutting lobby hours in their fast food places. Anyone who thinks these corporations will not cut costs to cover these increases is fooling themselves. My point is why don't politicians address the costs of the things that are crippling the average and low cost worker like houising costs, price of gasoline due to ridiculous taxes and fees, outrageous utility costs charged by companies making billions, out of control hospital ajd medication costs, runaway college tuition, Etc. Etc.

The dance we go through when inflation hits is ridiculous because the “higher ups” are greedy with their bottom line. The cost of living has gone up exponentially everywhere, and while the COL is not the same as California, Arkansas’ minimum wage is $11. How can anyone live on that?! Also, I found out that the waiting list for public housing in San Diego is 12 years. TWELVE! I think you’re right. Those who have the ability need to be addressing the real problems with prices and housing. Other countries have proven it’s possible to pay a livable wage without the prices of everything skyrocketing.

A little bit of info for anyone curious... in New Zealand the petrol price here is $2:70 on average per litre which equals approximately $10:20 per gallon. Minimum wage in NZ $23:15 per hour, equals USD $14:10. The average rent for a family home per week is $550 - $700+($335 - $426 USD per week) this depends on the city/ town and areas, but in the city centres they are often higher priced for less space. If your on minimum wage or a low wage above the minimum, the government department "Work and Income NZ (WINZ) will top up the rent which is income tested and is zoned, for example higher priced areas to live in like Auckland, Hamilton,Wellington and Queenstown are able to receive a higher amount toward rents and are allowed to earn more to be eligible for the accomodation supplement. Whereas where I live in a lower zoned area it's a maximum of up to $80 PW toward rents and our wage threshold is lower to receive it. The town where I live has quite high rental prices, on average it's between $530-650+ for a 3-4 bedroom house. Food, gas, rent and power here in NZ is so expensive. On average our winter power bill is $300-$400 this is because our house is older with single glazing and we have the heater on every day and on low throughout the night otherwise we would freeze. This price includes fixed costs for delivery charges ($2:35 per day, plus GST (good and services tax 15%) Queenstown is crazy expensive, the hospitality workers can barely afford to work and live there. Finding affordable housing, or a room is near impossible. Yet Queenstown would struggle to stay functioning without these vital workers on minimum wage. NZ has a housing crisis also like the rest of the world.

Also servers who get tips and have to share them with Cooks hostesses get taxed on tips. But the people they have share it with do not get taxed on the tips the servers are v required to give them. And employers for the most part still add all there orders up and take taxes out for what the state says they should be getting. Even if they are not getting that tip. The people who have to pay the $20 per hour will always see it as a bad thing, especially in the beginning, but if they just wait for awhile they should come to understand the workers now have money to buy more of their products which will lead to their profits rising. It won't only be their workers buying more but other employer's workers buying more. It takes a little time for these workers to get what they need and settle into their new incomes but it will happen. All the places they spend their pay will have more money to spend elsewhere. Plus the workers attitudes will improve when they aren't worried about wether or not to pay this bill or to buy food.

Many companies are talking about moving out of California; companies like McDonald's. So it's not only customers being pinched, but many of them will be unable to shop for the goods and services they have had for years because the companies are moving out. Minimum wage in Seattle is $19.97 for most people (there is a different amount based on size of company and other compensation like health insurance) and it’s been a lifesaver for my husband. He was terminated from a job he had worked at for over 40 years while he was out with a work injury. He’s 64 and has only been able to get a job that pays $21, which is way less than he was making, but if minimum wage was lower he would be making less and we would be homeless. If you can’t afford to pay a livable wage you aren’t a legitimate business. Obviously, there are a lot of complex issues and raising minimum wage alone won’t fix them. A good start would be to stop sending aid to other countries until the citizens of this country are taken care of, as long as they are willing to work. Especially seniors who have worked their whole lives and are now lacking quality of life because they don’t get enough to afford basic necessities.

They are trying to figure out a plan not to be so overwhelmed. Simplicity , voluntary simplicity, minimalism sounds like a plan, what you are doing is inspiring. Keeping wages low wasn’t a solution. Never was! But raising wages is just one piece of the puzzle. I agree we need affordable housing! Even here in Maine life is challenging for many. We need workers to do in home care giving. So many seniors here need help. The best to you!

First of all, nothing will ever ruin California. Greed in real estate will make it become unrealistic and unaffordable for most the population to live here that is true. So in the future it's the wealthy that will only be able to afford to live here (besides homeowners and renters paying 90% of their paychecks on mortgages and rent, then that $20 an hr. is going to a nessessity instead of controversial). The irony then though the wealthy can surely afford the high cost of fast food no problem. Except the wealthy don't have to eat fast food. They can go somewhere else and have two hour lunches in expensive places with perfect food. And if hotel workers think they're underpaid and want to strike, let them strike. It's worth a shot! And honestly soon it'll be $23-25 an hr. California is the state of perfect weather. Beaches that can be compared to anywhere from Italy to the Hawaiian Islands. Laguna Beach alone has millions a year in tourists! So if the workers who service these often fussy visitors want to get paid for it , and the visitors can afford their vacation here, it's a win-win situation. Who really ought to have the gavel come down on them is the unscrupulous landlords, corporate and otherwise, taking advantage of no rent controls while everyone else is bickering against each other about a mere $20 an hr.!

A lot of fast food restaurants like McDonalds have a small profit margin to begin with, and if they don’t raise their prices to cover expenses then they cannot operate and stay in business. This rapid increase in minimum wage will cause businesses to close and job loss. California now has the highest unemployment rate in the country because they keep passing these laws that hurt businesses.

@@thesewingeyedoc Thanks for telling me what I know. These companies are built on profit. Capital gains. If they don't make a certain percentage of profit, it's not a viable business. They have futures and analysts to help them project/predict their profits and losses quarterly. Any business that's successful pays attention to trends and is prepared to adjust accordingly. If they weren't so grossly profit driven and dependant on corporate welfare, they wouldn't be so ill equipped to manage changes in the market. The minimum wage has been overdue for a raise for too long. Any business that didn't see this day coming was purely profit driven. They had no problem raking in the spoils of deregulation and tax cuts. The bubble has burst. The gravy train has left the building. They should have been prepared. It wasn't a sudden nor subtle change. That's how capitalism works. Be prepared or lose everything. I don't feel sorry for them. Not talking about mom&pop businesses. (jic you try and go there)

The problem is simple: Record Profits = Unpaid Wages! Corporations are GREEDY. Period! Jobs are meant to supply LIVING Wages to workers. NOT to fatten shareholders' pockets! The Minimum Wage was first instituted as a means to guarantee a LIVING WAGE for workers! When it first was initiated, a SINGLE wage earner could buy a home, a car, feed and clothe a family of four - as well as have enough to send his/her kids to college and even save for retirement! Today, the Federal Minimum wage is STILL only $7.25hr! Um, Excuse me?! There is NOWHERE in the entire US where ANY ONE single wage earner can afford RENT for a One bedroom apartment, let alone: Food, clothing, transportation, higher education or retirement savings, on that!! The Problem is NOT state mandated minimum wages, it's GREEDY CORPORATIONS!
