20 Grocery Hacks that Save Me $2000+ a Year [Frugal Living]

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

My 20 strategies to save money at the grocery store.
Inflation and supply chain issues have put grocery prices at an all time high. The prices of many products have doubled, which has make people not be able to afford their favorite groceries. There is one way to combat these rising prices and it is through being frugal.
Frugality is the best weapon to save money at the grocery store and the good news is that all we have to do is make small changes in our lives to save money.
I keep my grocery budget under $200 a month while buying healthy and nutritious foods. In the last few years I have learned many different ways to save money that help me cut my grocery expenses without sacrificing high quality foods. In this video I share 20 grocery saving hacks that save me thousands of dollars a year on my grocery bill.
1. Don't underestimate the pennies
When you go to the grocery store set out to save money at small levels like 10 cents on a can of beans or 50 cents on a loaf of bread. All the pennies will add up at the end of the trip.
2. Understand the difference between a want and a need
A want is things that do not nourish your body like ice cream and candy. A need is something that does nourish your body like fruits. If you are on a budget, start cutting out your wants to save money.
3. Know which stores sell the cheapest stuff
Not all grocery stores have the same prices. Go to different stores to see who has the cheapest prices and shop at those stores.
4. Don't fall for packaging
Sometimes if an item is in a shiny package it could cost 4 times as much, but the only real difference is the packaging. Don't think that since something is in a nicer package it is better because it normally just means it costs more money.
5. Ditch single use items
Items like paper towels, napkins, and plastic bags are a waste of money. You do not need these items and can find reusable alternatives to save money.
6. Only grocery shop once a week
If you grocery shop multiple times a week you will spend more money on gas and buy more foods. Limit shopping to once a week.
7. Portion things correctly
Things like laundry detergent you need to measure them out correctly. You might be wasting money by using too much.
8. Use grocery store apps
Most grocery stores have apps that offer a lot of different savings. Download the grocery store apps to save money.
9. Don't go to the expensive grocery stores
Just because a store looks nice on the inside does not mean that it is better. Don't spend more money because of atmosphere.
10. Buy in bulk
Buy higher quantities of things like toilet paper to save money. When you buy a higher quantity you will spend less.
11. Buy generic brand instead of name brand
Generic brand is 20% cheaper than name brand items and the main difference is usually just the packaging.
12. Eat less meat
We consume too much meat in the United States that it is bad for our health and wallets. Eat less meat and you will save money.
13. Don't buy trimmed meat
Most people only buy boneless and skinless cuts of meat. Take a couple minuted to trim the meat yourself and you will save a lot of money.
14. Eat less desired parts of meat
Chicken breast is the most expensive cut of meat, but if you buy other cuts like the legs or thighs you will save money.
15. Buy frozen fruits and vegetables instead of fresh
Frozen produce is much cheaper than fresh because they do not need to rush it to the grocery store. If you want to be healthy on a budget choose to buy frozen instead of fresh.
16. Freeze food before it goes bad
If you cannot eat something, put it in the freezer before it goes bad and eat it later. You won't waste the food and you will save a lot of money.
17. Refrigerate fruits and vegetables
Fruits and vegetables last a lot longer in the fridge than on the counter. Put them in the fridge so they last longer.
18. Pay with a credit card
If you have the self control to pay off the balance, credit cards offer cash back on purchases. Pay with a credit card and it will add up to hundreds of dollars a year.
19. Don't slack on the healthy foods
Don't try to save money by not buying healthy foods. You will pay more later with high medical bills. Buy healthy foods to prevent becoming unhealthy.
20. Don't have kids
Just kidding...but less mouths to feed.

I thought most grocery store apps/programs were about the same, but learned they're not. Had been going to the same grocery store forever (grew up going there), but started going to a different one that was closer and noticed their app would start showing me custom/additional discounts I could apply on regular foods I buy every week (including produce, breads, and other staples, not just non-staple items like some of the others). This store used to have the perception of costing a bit more (pennies/dimes more, not dollars), but since It's easy to compare prices with other stores apps it hasn't necessarily been the case.

You need to hire a financial advisor to help you diversify your portfolio by including Mutual Funds, Etf's, the 11 GICS groups, inflation-indexed bonds, and stocks of companies with reliable cash flows rather than growth stocks, where prices were based on future prospective earnings.

That's correct. At first, I wasn't too pleased with my gains compared to my previous performances, I was doing so poorly, I thought I needed to diversify into better assets, so I got in touch with an investment-advisor. In light of the ongoing global economic crisis, it is crucial for everyone to prioritize investing in diverse sources of income that are not reliant on the government. This includes exploring opportunities in stocks, gold, silver, and digital currencies. Despite the challenging economic situation, it remains a favorable time to consider these investments.

The pathway to substantial returns doesn't solely rely on stocks with significant movements. Instead, it revolves around effectively managing risk relative to reward. By appropriately sizing your positions and capitalizing on your advantage repeatedly, you can progressively work towards achieving your financial goals. This principle applies across various investment approaches, whether it be long-term investing or day trading.

Even with the right strategies and appropriate assets, investment returns can differ among investors. Recognizing the vital role of experience in investment success is crucial. Personally, I understood this significance and sought guidance from a market analyst, significantly growing my account to nearly a million. Strategically withdrawing profits just before the market correction, I'm now seizing buying opportunities once again.

I shop at Walmart and noticed their prices on beef and chicken in terms of cost per pound. Luckily I went to my local butcher who was able to beat the cost per pound for fresh chicken and choice & prime beef if I bought in bulk. I did that and vacuumed sealed all of it. The positives are he knows my preferred cuts of meat. We have a solid owner/customer relationship. Great tips but the one about not having kids might be a bridge too far. But like cars, there are plenty of good quality used kids on the market and many are available in a package deal where you get a good used wife in the bargain. Buy a used house and, presto, you have a family at a fraction of the cost. I got my kid when he was 9. No disposable diapers to buy and his teeth were in good shape so the largest expenses were food, clothing, little league baseball fees, motorcycles, computers, summer camp fees and guitar lessons. Later on they will need a car but most are happy with you old car, leaving you free to upgrade. As with most things, a good quality used kid is the better deal. Just maintain it properly and give it unconditional love and it will love you back.

I have no impulse control with treats so I never keep them in my apt. If I want a cookie or something, I have to go to the store and about 80% of the time laziness wins out. Shhhh, don't tell people about frozen veggies, then they will be out of stock at the store 🙂. I am fan of batch cooking for 2 hours on Sunday so all I have to do is microwave a meal.

You are spot on with your hacks. The supermarkets here are wise to the weekly shopper with a list. They are now randomly discounting staples to encourage more frequent trips. The up side is you can find great bargains and can stock up. The downside is you are tempted to buy what is not needed. PS saving 60% of income is a great goal. Mind you, the higher the income the easier it is to achieve. On minimum wage essential living costs eat it all up, leaving nothing or barely nothing to save.

Meal planning! It's one of the best things I've ever done, no more scrounging around trying to figure out what is for dinner and I know the night before what needs to come out of the freezer. We've cut way down on the amount of food that gets thrown away. Every six months we do an eat down of everything that is in the freezer and pantry, sometimes it yields interesting meals, but that way I know nothing is wasted due to it going bad.

Nice tips 👍 I would add meal planing and shopping lists to the top 3 and switching to plant based diet. I’m also not the big fan of “buying frozen instead of fresh whenever you can” as this comes with cost to the environment (plastic packaging). Lets not be to short sighted and consider how our choices affect not only our wallets but also other species and planet 🙌

California is going to require thermo plastic packaging to be partially 20-30% recycled plastic in the next five years. A great start for reducing plastics in the trash stream. Also the thin filmy produce bags in stores must be compostable or recycled plastics same time frame. Stores already do not give out the plastic shopping sacks like they did for free years ago. Now paper, boxes, or reusable bags only.

Ha ! Number 20 , I'm still looking after mine lol because they can't afford to move out ! But yes don't have so many might be the answer ! 😆 Most of your hacks I am already doing , but the cost of living particularly energy has rocketed up in U.K which has spiralling food prices , but I have noticed that stores are literally cutting the cost of non essential goods , IE TVs , gadgets ect , so beware when you are shopping, don't be tempted unless your item is broken or damaged . Otherwise you are spending what you've saved .

For energy saving, try wearing an Oodie or similar double fleece lined hooded top/wearable blanket. I swear by them. Plus wear 2 pairs of socks, one a thick woollen pair. 2 pairs of pants. It's fantastic. Plus use the old fashioned hot water bottles. I have 2 and swear by them as well. If your circulation is bad get a rebounder and jog at home with the tv going and subtitles on. It really works and much cheaper and more convenient than going out to a gym. If you are freezing warm up with a quick hot shower, get dressed immediately and then use the hot water bottles. Wear a beanie to bed and inside. Oh and fingerless gloves. They work really well. Get 2 of everything so you can wash them. There is always kerosene heaters cheap to run....but they do stink and you have to be careful of carbon monoxide poisoning or oxygen asphyxiation...not worth the saving on the cost of living if it means dying! But possible if you have proper ventilation.

Hack #7 There are 3 fill lines barely visable inside the cap; for small medium and large loads. The large load is about 1/3 of the cap. If you fill the cap to the top you're using 3 times too much. I buy a jug and then refill a third into 2 other jugs each then fill the remainder of the 3 jugs with water. When myself or someone else in the house does laundry a cap full has already been set up prescribed level.

@@HK-yn1vl Yes I do this. It's a great hack but also for difficult stains I use oxygenated stain removal in prewash. Fantastic. Makes a huge difference. Huge.
