I enjoyed the list. Would've liked to have seen Davis home run against Stewart in game one of '90 W.S. That shot sent a message to the 'A's and to the Reds fans that WE CAN DO THIS! Those 'A were invincible before Eric the Red showed the world otherwise.

The home run by #44 should have been shown for sure. That home run was said to be the energy that made them feel like they could beat the A's, who were better on paper with McGwire, Canseco and Rickey Henderson, and two 20+ game winners! Nice job on the vid!

@@Cincinnatus1869 Yep. Johnny Bench night. I was there also. I believe the homer was in his first at bat that evening. The ball barely cleared the left field wall as the crowd erupted in triumphant cheers and Bench headed toward first base with his index finger pointing right at us. It was glorious, except for the fact the Reds lost the game (or was that Tony Perez Day or Davey Concepcion Day…they were losing a lot by then). It was sad to see all those guys go, but they have given us a lifetime of great moments to savor.

I want to see video of the entire bottom of the 9th, game 5 NLCS 1972. Bench hit the lead-off home run; Foster scored on the wild pitch. 15-20 minutes elapsed between those two events. The Pirates had led 3-1, Cesar Geronimo hit a home run in the 7th or 8th to make it 3-2. Bench's home run tied it at 3. Tony Perez followed with a single, Foster came in to run for him. Dennis Menke hit another single. There was a sacrifice fly that put Foster to third. I think Darrel Chaney popped out. Hal McRae came in to hit for the pitcher's spot - Clay Carroll I believe. Dave Giusti was replaced with Bob Moose at some point. Moose then threw the wild pitch on a 1-1 count to McRae that was toward the first base side and went completely by, allowing Foster to score easily and win the penant. The Reds lost the very close World Series to Oakland. The A's had superior starting pitching, no question about that. The Reds lost the first two at home and were pronounced dead as no team had ever come back to win after losing the first two at home. Reds came back after taking 2 out of 3 in Oakland, trailing 3-2 in the series. Reds blew out the A's in game 6, setting the stage for game 7. If Sparky had left Billingham in - a journeyman pitcher who was VERY tough in tough situations - the Reds may have won game 7. Instead, Sparky yanked him for Pedro Borbon, who promptly gave up enough runs to put the A's out of reach. Borbon was tough and you put him in to hold the line and pitch 3 innings in middle relief. You didn't count on him in critical situations. Captain Hook ruined the chance for the Reds to win in 72. It was sooo close, unlike 70 when the Reds took the lead first in EVERY game, but could not coast to the finish up against the renowned Orioles pitching staff and the defense of Brooks Robinson. But, if the Reds had won in 72 - things might have been changed and perhaps the astounding season of 75 and the greatest World Series ever played in 75 would not have happened. Carlton Fisk gets the hero badge for that one... but watch the whole game. It was incredible. And let's not forget ex-Red Bernie Carbo's 3 run homer, that tied the game at 6-6 leading to the extra innings and all the fabulous defensive plays up until Fisk ended it. Bernie was high as a kite when he hit that home run. And Dock Ellis famously pitched a no-hitter while tripping on acid. Stories behind the stories make all these memorable events even more interesting!

You say what you want about the hr derby. But being born in 95 I do not have any recollection of the reds winning in the playoffs, regardless I am a reds fan until I die. For the hr derby I was in fountain square when Frazier won and it was absolutely once in a lifetime experience. There is something special about being in your home city watching the event amongst fellow reds fans in a public place whole watching a beloved player come back to win that will always stick with me

Mostly a good list but I have a few quibbles. I would drop Frazier's HR derby win since it was a meaningless competition. I would also exclude the various final outs from different series since they are ho-hum. I would add instead Perez's clutch 2-run HR in Game 7 of the 75 series. They were down 3-0 in the 6th and seemed to be circling the drain once again in the WS. I would also add Rose's game-tying single an inning later and Morgan's go-ahead single in the 9th. The Foster-to-Bench put out in extra innings of Game 6 of the 75 series also shines. The Morgan-to-Bench put out ended Game 5 of the 72 series brought the Reds back from the brink and sent the series back to Cincy for the final 2 games. Perez's walk-off single in Game 2 of the 76 series is the equal of Oliver's hit in 1990.

  • @UKSportsFan

I think you did a really good job putting this together, and that you nailed just about all of them. The one thing that I probably would replace is Frazier winning the HR Derby contest with Tom Seaver pitching his one and only career no hitter for the Reds. Other than that, I can't think of anything that you missed that probably should have been included.

The division re-alignment ruined the Reds-Dodgers rivalry that dominated the 70s and later. I once met a former Dodger who was working in the front office in 1999... and he agreed with me, the Reds and Dodgers would sell out even if neither was in contention. Even when the Reds lost - as in 1974 - the Dodgers knew they'd been in a fight. Baseball was ruined for me when they introduced a wild card system - second (or third) place teams do not belong in post season. Period. If say, Reds beat out Houston to win the division, they shoudn't have to play them again as a wild card. Then came the strike, and I just hung it up. I do not care about baseball at the MLB level anymore. I didn't even know the Reds had a division win after 1994, or that they had a player hit 4 home runs in one game. Home runs these days are like field goals. When you watch sports wrap-ups for the day, they show all the home runs and nothing else... unless somebody threw a no-hitter or made a spectacular play. I suppose the next thing to happen to baseball, after they ruin it further with a pitch clock or X fouls and you're out, maybe just eliminate bases all together as well as fielders, and just see how many home runs you can pop. Maybe let the same guy bat for 3 days like they do in cricket. Sheesh. Stupid ass surveys in the 80s fans complained baseball was slow. Baseball is... baseball. Trying to turn it into football has ruined it. Didn't take much. Houston Astros in the American league? WTF is going on? MLB baseball to me is forever in the past. However indie league is really fun. I've gone to Florence Freedom games and enjoyed them very much. They did a real stupid and changed the team name to the "Y'alls". They're now named after a fucked up water tower, instead of the founding principle of the country. Just more of the crap that's happening to everything. The generations behind me will have to live with what they've created. I won't for terribly much longer.

The home run derby is a little lame but it was a year the Reds hosted the All-Star game. What about the 1970 All-Star Game at Riverfront in its first year opening when Rose scored the winning run in his collision with Fosse? At least back then the All-Star game seemed to mean something other than some stupid Bud Selig idea of giving home field advantage in the world series to the league that wins. A team busts it's butt all year, 162 games, to get the better record and loses home field due to an exhibition game? Selig could never make a legit case for integrity or just pride. He fell in with the money like all the other greedy people associated with this game and it was always clear which side of the fence he stood on. Yes, to this day, people dislike Pete Rose for well and really over publicized reasons but when you talk to the soon to be 80 year old legend and hit king, he still talks about SMART baseball and the 2020 version of the Reds, especially in postseason, continually showed how dumb players wearing those uniforms and swinging those bats are. Mr. Former MVP Joey Votto forgets how to run bases, the rest of the lineup hit the shit out of the air. Smart baseball does not seem to exist? Playing for ones NEXT contract does.
