The two countries which have the letter X are Mexico and Luxembourg.
Austria derives its name from the German word "ost", meaning east, while Australia comes from the Latin "auster", meaning south. So despite sounding very similar, the names of these countries are derived from two different cardinal directions.

This Swe - Den thing is quite funny. :) Good thing there wasn't (as far as I know) a match between Nigeria and Germany. It could've caused some problems with shortening those countries' names the usual way and display it on TV.

Fortunately Nigeria's FIFA code is actually NGA so this isn't such a problem. However, there would be an issue if Niger played against Germany, though as far as I'm aware the two nations have never met on the football pitch.

On number 7: you forgot about Brazil's (spelled Brasil in Portuguese) capital, Brasilia :D
@kleberschenk
Жыл бұрын
Actually, the word "Brasilia" means "Brazil" in Latin. I think Brazil is the only country whose capital has the name of the country itself in a language that is not official in it.
Peru and Fiji are two countries whose capitals are also 4 letters Capitals which contain their country names should include El Salvador/San Salvador
I worried that San Salvador was missed from list of capitals having same names as countries, but it indeed technically doesn’t contain El Salvador

Also for countries with similar names, check out The Commonwealth of Dominic and The Republic of Dominica, both located in the Caribbean area
Another fun fact: The Vatican has two popes per km²
The guinea pig is not originated in either of the Guineas, but named after it´s price in early modern english - 1 Guinea, the coin that was named after the Region - western Africa - where the used gold was mined.

Fun fact there is one country which contains the word democratic in its name, and is rated as being the most democratic country in its region. Monaco is listed on some info sites as having no capital city. Most of the government buildings are within the "quarter" of Monte Carlo, one of the five quarters within the nation. The term Monaco means the whole nation, but is also called a city-state. So what its capital city is can be debated.

X is not a real letter. There are also a few “words” that start with X. Most other languages are just fine using “ks” for the same purpose.
@tldr7730
Жыл бұрын
It is in many languages. Several languages consider the slavonic "ya" (looks like a mirrored capital R) not a letter, it´s even a common trope in english/US imagery to mirror any "R" in a word to make it look "russian". There are many letters that no exist in many other languages/alphabeths.

Too much fuss is made about this sort of thing. Most languages have consonant and vowel sounds that don't exist in English, for example, the "oo" sound in the French article "une" is nothing like "oo" in English. This means that the English ways of saying foreign words are only ever likely to be approximations of the original anyway. It works both ways and other countries will also have their own ways of pronouncing foreign names, and this can even differ between countries speaking the same language (British English: Van Goff, American English: Van Go, neither of which are much like the Dutch). As someone who lives near Shroozbree/Shrozebree, I can confirm that some places don't even have one standard pronuncation in their own country.
