NO, most Southerns in the U.S. did not just start making fried green tomatoes after the 1990s movie, nor did we start in the 1950s. I have a recipe from my great grandmother for fried green tomatoes dated 1910. Back then, it was done as a way to use tomatoes that were still green and had been blown off the vines by storms. Nothing was wasted. Sometimes, the green tomatoes were cut up along with some onions, okra, yellow crook-neck squash, dusted with flour & cornmeal, then all fried up together. In bacon grease, of course!

I'd love to see you cover a dish called "Hillbilly Green Beans" which was green beans, fresh, cooked in chicken broth, added to onions and cooked bacon. It was a staple of a lot of southern tables and my grandpa made the best.

Um, fried green tomatoes existed in the South LONG before the film (or even the book the film was based on) came out. I don't know where the BLEEP you're getting your research but it's below shoddy if this is your first offering. (There are plenty of restaurants throughout the South where you can still get fried green tomatoes--if you want them--and, since most Southern supermarkets sell tomatoes, including green ones, year-round, they really haven't "vanished" from the family table.)

@535tony I still love them! I remember when they were relatively new, riding with the family from CT to NC and sometimes to FL. Mom usually made great sandwiches, but on rare occasions, we'd get KFC! Even my picky Italian father loved it! It was soo good back then, and there was a different taste than regular fried chicken. I recall the " secret recipe." 😋 Great memories. I'm craving it thinking about it! I only get it every couple of years... I'm overdue

You can get hush puppies at Captain D’s and Long John Silvers and probably other restaurants that are known for mainly serving fish. Also, Cotton Patch Cafe serves fried pickles and fried green tomatoes. It probably depends on where you live on whether or not a food is commonly served.

I made Spam and eggs a few weeks ago. That hasn't died out. We had a restaurant in the area serving fried chicken livers until very recently. We still have a restaurant serving fried frogs legs. We have another restaurant that still serves hush puppies. These foods have only died out with people who don't cook, and people who only eat in chain restaurants.

We would hunt for morel mushrooms and deep fry them in a very light batter at the same time we fried pickle chips with the same batter. Yumm!!! Our Old Shawnee Days celebration would have tons of food vendors every year. The best one did funnel cakes, fried Oreos, candy bars, Twinkie’s, even frozen cheesecake slices. They used the funnel cake batter and kept everything frozen then just dipped it in the batter and fried to order. It was heaven! Fried snickers and Twix bars…🤤🤤

My mother used to make fried cauliflower on Christmas Eve which was a Christmas Eve tradition along with all of the seafood. It was absolutely fantastic! It was fried with Italian bread crumbs and plenty of Parmesan cheese mixed with the breadcrumbs. It was a lot of work because you had to steam it till tender first before you fry it but my goodness it was delicious. That's something I'm going to make I don't have the recipe but I remember❤
