Hi friends, thank you for those who politely corrected me in the comments, I make a major boo boo putting Man Bites Dog in here, although the film is in French it’s from Belgium. My apologies. Appreciate you correcting me when I make these mistakes. 🤘🏼

I was gonna say wait where is AntiChrists because I always assumed it was a french film because everything about it is similar to the themes and filming styles of french extremity films and because well Charlotte Gainsbourg is like the french macabre queen! But since it is not I'm wondering now have you covered AntiChrists and if so which category of film did you or would you put it in?

Hi Emma! No need to apologize. Your list is very good and you make a real effort to write the original title. It's not a big thing. 7 Days is not a "French" film, it's french canadian, from Quebec, just up north the US. We have great filmmakers but we are not known for horror. So I would say it's more an anomaly than being part of the French extreme wave. In that regard I feel Man bites Dog feels more "french" than 7 days.
Emma, seriously, you make the best videos. Don’t stop

Calvaire is a "Franco-Belge" production (as for Grave/Raw for example). For the nationality of a movie only production nationalities are used. But Man bites dog is a full belgian production indeed.

Irreversible was so uncomfortable to watch because of the extended assault, the sound was so off I couldn’t hear them speak a word, and the movie went in reverse. It’s hard to watch.
I remember watching Martyrs with a friend of mine. We were 20/21 and knew nothing about it, only that our local video stores wouldn't carry it, which made us want to see it even more. It's still the most violent film I've ever seen, to this day ten years later! Definitely messed up.
If there's a more disturbing movie than "Martyrs", God I don't want to see it.

I loved Incident In A Ghostland, goes under a lot of people's radar. Although I'm Scottish I grew up in France. It was a shock to see Mylène Farmer in the movie, I was so used to hearing her on the radio, she is a very well known French singer.
Frontier(s) is one of my favorite movies! I’m so glad to see it on this list. I love starting my morning off with coffee and a new list from you.

Well none of those countries can quite top French Extremity or the french disturbing macabre. The French cinema is a beast at this genre and while Spain, Portugal, India etc might have a few films that can match to the french extremity category its simply not enough. France has not only earned it but created this category. Just like japan will always have the owned the category of many of the world's scariest most original horror films ever seen that can be remade but never duplicated well France is the same way in the disturbing/extreme category. You finally saw Calvaire/The Ordeal! I recommended this film to you multiple times a long time ago. This film needs to be discussed. Is it about obsession in the strangest possible way? Also, that piano scene is bonkers and totally genius! Good luck getting that movie out of your head. I still can’t.

Great video Emma. I love Raw , Ils , martyrs , climax and Revenge . Haven’t seen the others but want to check them out . Loving french extreme films .
You and Ryan Hollinger are my fav horror youtubers, it’s awesome that you shout him out :)
I love High Tension, it was actually one of the first pretty hardcore horror films I'd seen as a teen. I like the ending, tho I can see why it would piss some folks off. Also love the use of Muse in the soundtrack! Pitch perfect.
Just a side note. You mentioned The Gift. I watched it one night on your recommendation. It was so tense I had to stop it about a third in and finish it during the day. Incredible. Thank you.
Love it!!! You nailed it Emma.
This is a fantastic list Emma! I've seen a few of them, Hidden (Cache) and High Tension being totally unforgettable! While I didn't care for Climax, I loved the opening 30 minutes with the dance scene!
Hey Emma, i don't know if you meant french spoken or from france. But i did want to point out that c'est arrivé pres de chez vous and Calvaire are both Belgian movies. As a Belgian, i'm quite proud of them so i really wanted to let you know, in case you didn't :)

I have to agree with you, this is often something that annoys me when people talk about “French” films. Are we talking country or language? There’s so many Belgian films with French dialogue, but automatically everyone thinks it’s a film out of France. Upsetting tbh.

@@eelenseth Blame IMDB, Calvaire, for some reason in the plot keywords it says "French Horror" and "French Shock Cinema", the same with C'est arrivé pres de chez vous, IMDB Plot Keywords "French Cinema" it's confusing for non natives. It's a shame we don't get more exposure to Cinema from Belgium and The Netherlands, I've mostly only seen movies that have been screened at Film Festivals in the UK. Hi! I chanced upon this video just now as i am a new subscriber to your channel. I just want to express my opinion on the movie, Ghostland. The twist was depressingly brilliant. I was already feeling down from what the sisters are experiencing but it was magnified a whole lot more because of the big reveal.

The best film out there!
As a french i can say that is a great list!Martyrs and Irreversible are my favorite.Did you also watch the movie Twentynine Palms from Bruno Dumont? The ending is quite shocking....
Another superb vid Emma. I looove French Extremity. I think the country doesn't matter; it's the language that makes it FE. At the outset of the video you mentioned "...titles you couldn't repeat on YT." What were those? You've piqued my curiosity....'Baise Moi? maybe?
Finally someone mentions Il's. I think that it and Eden Lake share a similar theme, but Il's is terrifying. I have seen some of the films on this list. Inside really creeped me out because of it's atmosphere. I have seen Calvaire and Sheitan, although neither of them bothered me really. High Tension is just gory and has a nonsensical ending. I'll have to check some of these other ones out, thanks for the list!
Thank you so much for highlighting man eats dog 😊 but I thought it was a belgian movie. The rest of the list looks very interresting. Greetings

Excellent list, happy that you added Trouble every day, not many people know about it. but its great movie with awesome music by Tindersticks.
Great video. The Lamphouse did a deep dive into the representational aspect of almost all of these movies. If you like these movies and wanted to dig into the meaning of them, I highly recommend that video.
any recommendaiton on how to get some of these films, such as livid. very limited sources on torrent sites and such and I would love to watch every single film on your list. your channel is awesome thank you.
I'm so glad you picked Calvaire : one of my favourite horror movies. Trouble every day is a movie I've watched once and will never watch again. The cannibals succombing to their pulsion gives incredibly hard to watch scenes.
I specifically watched this video faster than usual because I was hoping you'd talk about High Tension. I know it's divisive but I LOVE IT! It made me an Alexandre Aja stan. Lol
Yay thanks Emma awesome video! There’s so many I still need to see 👀 Raw has been on my list for a long time. I’m so glad you mentioned haute tension I’ve been waiting for this video 🖤 I think the ending was awesome, on first viewing I was really taken back by it but I think it’s a movie you need to watch a second time to fully appreciate it, Ive never seen a movie quite like it or at least with certain themes that hit me that way. I don’t think the ending deserves the hate it gets because on second viewing there were so many little Easter eggs for the unfolding of the ending I didn’t pick up the first time! it’s honestly one of my favourite movies.🥰
Incident at Ghostland is actually a really tragic film. The whole crew got sued (director, producer) because the blonde girl's face got split open during a scene where a mirror breaks, and it LITERALLY ruined her life and career. What is even worse is, they kept the scene in the film AND a great many people think the box art (even though it is not same girl) is sort of playing up the actresses injury (as the poster is a picture of a girl with literally, a split face). Adds some real darkness to an already messed up flick.

Excellent list Emma... I have almost all of these on DVDs or Blu-ray. But I am sad that you left off the films that lie at the roots of the French horror, namely Eyes Without A Face/Les Yeux Sans Visage from 1960 and DIabolique 1955, which influenced Psycho. I first saw Les Yeux Sans Visage in 1990 in New York among an ultra hip audience. There were screams and laughter at the same time. I just know you haven't seen this yet... Why? Another film that would fit is Baby Blood (1990). Also 13 Tzameti. But no Eyes Without A Face? My head is buried in my hands. (Until you finally see it.) Thanks Emma.
Wow I've got every film on ur list apart from 4 of them!!!! Brilliant TopTen as always and nice to see someone choosing films from different backgrounds and non-English speaking peoples

hi love your vids ❤️
sweet list i think you have all the popular ones covered. My personal favorite is Martyrs, its true horror perfection that i recommend to everyone. It really is my favorite movie of all time.
I watched Hidden (Cache) in French class years ago. I rewatched it with my mom shortly thereafter, really stuck with me.
Emma!!! What is your opinion on French Netflix series Marianne? I haven't watched it yet. I need your opinion.
Am I the only one that gets hyped for these kind of videos . Because I love them and I always leave with a ton of new videos to watch and that’s all I ask for . I’m just going to say it if there is a label for scream queen as a youtuber you are it . I am very interested in knowing what your favorite revenge films are and I know kill bill isn’t horror but I do wonder if it will be on your list .
I've never forgotten Irreversible for 3 key reasons. The first is I can't even begin to guess how they did the practical effects for the fire extinguisher scene, you see every hit and the face gradually collapse and disintegrate without the camera ever panning away or cuts. Insane. The second is actually a mistake. A crew member ACCIDENTALLY walked into how during the tunnel scene, realised his mistake, and quickly exited the way he had entered. It made the already brutal scene even more impactful because what we see is a bystander walk in on the rape and rather than help in any way, just leave. This was early enough that she could have definitely survived has he intervened. The third is just the final message - LE TEMPS DETRUIT TOUT - which translated as "time destroys everything" or "time destroys all things"....like a decade later I still think of that quote sometimes because it is so depressingly true. There is nothing in this Universe that will not be eventually destroyed by time, including the actual Universe itself.
great list emma i think i've seen most of those movies.
Wow that Martyrs just blew me away and became my new favorite horror flick!
thank you very much for this new video this is so cool and awesome in the best thing ever and this is so good and I like this end I cannot wait for more like this 😇

Kathryn McGrath-Agreed, it's nice to see Ils/Them getting some well deserved recognition. I'm not really a fan of home invasion movies, but that movie is the one exception, though I don't rewatch it too often thanks to it being the one horror movie that traumatised me so much the first time I saw it that it gave me my first (and so far only) panic attack, and i still can't bring myself to watch it if i'm home alone, it just leaves me feeling too uncomfortable.
