I was shocked when I first heard about the Jerry Lee Lewis story. I was just working on a pitch for a Jerry Lee Lewis biopic where he's depicted for who he truly is: a predator. The fact that Myra, his cousin, was in middle school shook me to my core. Same with Aaliyah and R Kelly. I was pissed off that the Aaliyah movie romanticized the relationship. I can't imagine how traumatized Aaliyah was at that time and the fact she carried that trauma all the way to her death is even sadder.

I feel like dating younger is seen as glamorous and reflects positively on the older person, so I don’t see this kind of stuff going away. At worst, it still ends up on the “exciting/funny/steamy” end of publicity. I had a front row seat for a marriage that was hurt by its age gap; I hated seeing what it did to my mom. Most teen years are as a child so that is the assumption most people make. They know if they say “adult” or the actual age most people won’t think it is the medias place to make judgements about two consenting adults. Edit - Nick and Hugh were both in their mid 20s when they started dating their wives. Also, age may just be a number, but there's something to be said about seasons of life. An 18 year old's brain is still developing, there is a lot of learning and maturing still going on and they don't have much in common with a 28 year old who has been "adulting" for years. However, a 28 year old and a 38 year old are in pretty much the same season of life.
