I remember the day I first tried fly fishing . I had been fasinated with it for a long time. I went to the big sporting goods store, bought a starter kit and went to the lake. LOL I was popping and cracking and this older guy who was casting flies walked over and showed me how to cast , gave me some pointers and I was off and running . I learned to cast really fast . I used to see him all the time at that lake , what a nice guy . Its been a long time and I forgot his name but Thanks

I gotta warn you, we come in three varieties. It's a 30:68:2 ratio. 30% will be downright hostile. 68% will help you out, though they'll either hold back at something or hate you afterwards because you'll be taking their spots/gear. 2% actually enjoy helping people fish. Most fly fisherman land in that last category so long as you're a fly fisherman as well

Seriously, I recently got into fishing by myself and almost every time I go out there are people that are willing to help me if I have questions or anything. Just the other day I was reeling in a 13 pound channel catfish from a local urban lake when the guy about 200 ft to my left ran over with his net to help me land the fish over the railing. He congratulated me on my catch and took a picture for me. There's a sense of "togetherness" that you don't really find elsewhere where everybody wants each other to succeed 99% of the time.

Hey man, thanks for doing the fly fishing thing!! That guy Tom is a great guy, you'll find that a lot of fly fisherman will help each other out. Very friendly group of guys! Hell yes get a new rod! You learned a valuable lesson, you can't treat a fly rod like an ugly stick! You would have been better off crossing the creek and trying to grab the branch the fly was tangled in to get it back. But everyone learns that lesson sooner or later. And the spill in the creek, more common than you'd think!! For me it was twice in one day, and boy was that water cold!! Thank God I had my wading belt on, or my waders would've filled up. Anyway, great job, beautiful fish, and don't give up man it's worth pursuing this sport. It's very challenging, and rewarding at the same time. Enjoyed you latest attempt very much, and if you're not learning everyday......you're probably dead!! Get a new rod and have some more fun!! Loved it!! Keep up the great work!!!

When you set the hook be really gentle, trout have gentle mouths and you can rip the hook out easily. Also when catch and release fishing for trout use non barbed hooks or flatten down the barbs in your hooks so they do less damage to the trout 👍 another great video man keep it up

Yeah, you need a 101 class on fly fishing. A basic understanding will go a long way. Your casting is good for a beginner. I was suiting up to wade and fly fish. It was essentially my first time, I had made about a half a dozen casts the day before. Another vehicle comes up and two guys get out ready to fly fish. One of them asks me which way I'm going and what I was using. After I told him, he asked how new I was. I told him v new. He responds, 'well, I'm a certified casting instructor and a member of the board of the Federation of Fly Fishers in this region, would you like some casting instruction?'. I'm like, hell yeah. He gave me a dry fly and within minutes I had my first dry fly caught fish and my first Brook Trout ever. Fly fisherman community is generally v generous.

the fly fishing community loves seeing the young people coming in, when i first started i had just gotten my driving licence. at 16 , and for my birthday my uncle who had 5 month earlier gotten into fly fishing, i showed interest, he got me some starting gear. pushed off really learning because i was enjoying bait casting... 4 months later when I finally give it a shot, i ran into a guy in his 70's catching fish left and right like he was picking candy out of the shop like a little kid. he saw my rig, my line weight, what i was using and told me to hand him my rod because im not gonna have any fun if i am not set up right ( i was skeptical and had already fished for an hour catching nothing) soon as he fixed my leader and handed it back to me I was catching fish every other cast and stood there the whole day chatting with the man. just soaking up every thing he told me like i was a sponge on fly fishing. fished many many other times with him and some other older gentlemen who are up there in the years. sadly Greg passed 3 years ago and now i have found i have turned into him and have taught new fly fishers a few times now. the sport is one where if your not set up correctly you will not catch anything, but if your set up correctly you are hooked for life, I now make my own flies, built my own fly table.. the works and i just go hog wild some days catching bugs from local rivers and copying them, ive turned into an entomologist practically., ive gotten to the point where i pin them now so i can copy them. Long story short, the fly fishing community REALLY likes to teach new anglers and will even teach you some of their secret spots if you chat with them long enough and want nothing more than you to experience the fun that is fly fishing, its totally different from any other form of fishing.

Dude I really like the fly fishing and also it’s great that your starting fly fishing on your own without someone else getting you hooked ,but it fun. Keep tight lines brotha

The fishing community needs more people like Tom. I was so impressed by his desire to get you on a fish. I want to be him one day.

What a great steward to the flyfishing community, its people like Tom who help make others want to continue their pursuit in the life long love of flyfishing. Oh had to edit to tell ya cabellas often has packages of flies off to the side their prob half the price. AND the rod has cabellas name on it they will replace or give you credit towards a different one.
