That’s a scissor set and that’s really not good to do. If your fishing dries or drifting nymphs you trout set, or jerk the rod in an upward motion. If your fishing streamers you jerk the line whilst keeping the rod pointed towards the water, and only after is the hook is set do you raise the rod

Usually there are 4 types of line on a fly rod: first Dacron (backing), then the floating fly line, then a tapered leader, and lastly tippet. Tippet is what you cut off every time you put a new fly on.

That "leader" knot is what got me. In all seriousness though, the most important part of the cast is smooth acceleration to a sharp stop+pause at the front and back. That will give you better distance, prevent the line from piling down on the water, and give more accurate delivery. For catch-all flies, you can't go wrong with Woolly Buggers as subsurface and Royal Wulff or hoppers as a dry.

Great stuff! Couple tips for new fly guys: make sure your reel has Dacron fly backing before you put the fly line on. Leaders are generally tapered with the skinny tippet end of the line on the fly end. To avoid changing and buying leaders all the time you can add new tippet (sold separately) to the tapered leader. This keeps your leader in new condition and long enough to be stealthy. The other big tip is to watch and time your backcast to avoid being too abrupt- if you shock your cast strokes you’ll get mini knots in your tippet. Tight lines !!

Hey, FirstStateFishing! Fly fisherman here. I personally tie my own flies, but if you want to buy flies that bluegill are more likely to be able to bite with their tiny mouths, I recommend a size 14 hook/fly or smaller. Also, as far as bass, they make fly poppers. Top water bass fishing with a fly rod is awesome. Before you fish for bass, I’d get a 8 weight rod just in case you hook a big one. For setting the hook, raise the top of the fly rod up for smaller fish, and strip the line while pointing the rod at the fish for bigger ones (mostly for either big freshwater fish like Pike, or salt water). Fly fishing definitely takes practice, but you’ll grow to love it for sure. Good luck!

For panfish, best approach is probably a dry-dropper rig. Maybe a #14 or #16 elk hair caddis (dry fly) on top and prince nymph (a nice terrestrial-ish attractor pattern) maybe 16” beneath. You’ll smash those fish all day long. The dry fly also doubles as an indicator, since it’ll drown instantly if something takes the nymph.

Ok, so i doubt you will see this but if you do then here's some info. The first few flies you where using are dry flies, they're not supposed to sink, the main point of those are for them to stay on the surface, if you move your line back and forth in the air without the flying hitting the water you can keep them dry. When you set your hook do it right away and dont wait, set the hook by lifting the rod and pulling some line with your hand at the same time. Fly rods also aren't meant for flipping the fish onto the bank, when you have a larger fish keep tension while releasing out some fly line, and grab the fish with your hand. If it's a small bluegill you can just lift it out of the water with your rod. Hopefully this some what helps.

Poppers are great for bluegills too, and they also sell larger ones for bass. One hint -- when you're carrying a fly rod to your spot, carry it butt-end first with the rod pointing behind you. This way you won't snag your rod tip while you're walking. Tying your own flies is also fun and very addictive.

I typically don’t set the hook on panfish. They usually turn and swim to deep water after they take a bite. That turning usually sets the hook right in the corner of their mouth usually. I will set the hook when I catch a bass, but honestly it’s just a little tug. Usually just lift the tip of the rod up. Keep making fly fishing video. Also may want to watch mad river outfitters series on getting started with fly fishing. He has a video dedicated to fly line, leader and tippet. It’s actually really important that you have it rigged correctly if you’re worried about the consistency of you cast. Keep it up man!

Nice video! Nice little panfish you caught there. I primarily fly fish more than anything right now. What I would recommend is try looking around you to see what bugs surround you. Like the dragon fly or damselfly if it's a blue color. At that time of year look for in still water look for water boatman, dragon fly and damsel fly nymphs. You might want to look for terrestrial insects such as grasshoppers, ants, beetles or any insect from land. Especially after rain or wind. Those will fall into the water because of this. Be aware if you're fly fishing top water dry flies to put floatant on. Also, the rod that you bought is flimsy because it's a slower action rod meaning it flexes more. You just gotta be more patient on casting. I know this being a custom fly rod builder. I also tie my own flies to match what bugs are in my area too. For bass, you can also throw streamers which are flies that imitate meaty items such as leeches, crawdads, baitfish, and among others. You might want to even try to throw a mouse, frog, or a popper fly pattern for bass too and watch them smack it on the top! Now tying flies for bass and bluegill can be quite hard to tie depending on what you tie. Tying flies requires patience and a lot of practice. I've tied flies for 3 years now and have gotten really good at it. Also, my favorite bass flies are wooly buggers, crazy dad, zonkers, clouser minnows, Dave's hoppers, foam beetles, ants. For panfish, prince nymphs, pheasant tail nymphs, foam beetles, ants, crickets, and many more.

Hey first state I have watched your videos for over a year now. I love your new surf videos in Delaware. I fish in New Jersey a lot and love to go down to sea isle. It’s a great kingfish spot and I think it would be awesome if you tried it out. My favorite spot is under the bridge or whale beach

One. Buy a landing net. If you keep lifting fish like that on your fly rod you'll break another one. Two. Practice casting on some grass, ideally with someone who can show you how to cast. Three. Watch some videos on setting up fly reals and terminal tackle. Four. Speak to someone in your local fly tackle shop they will advise on suitable flies to use locally. Five. Keep on enjoying your fly fishing. You caught fish without any of the above, but I think those points will let you enjoy it more.
