20kW is a large stove top. Many people have the neccessary power supply (230V 3*32A) in their kitchen.
@andrewjvaughan
3 жыл бұрын
@@Netaction I think your magnitude is off - the largest burners pull 2.5kW at full heat. 80 amps is close to the entire load provided to many houses in the US (100A breakers being common), so 20kW is definitely not a common stove allocation
@Netaction
3 жыл бұрын
@@andrewjvaughan In Germany, all houses and most flats (even cheap installations from 1970th) have three phase supply. (Less current, less copper needed) The burners always have their own fuses separated from everything else in the kitchen. 3x16A fuses for the burners = 11kW is standard even in old houses. Sometimes 3x12A, not often but still common 3x32A. But you are right, the full house does not have much more. A common family home has 3x64A, a common flat 3x32A. The only large consumer besides the cooking station is the water heater with 10kW. I know there are water heaters in other countries with 3kW but in Germany they have 10kW.

I can imagine the local electric board sending a couple of electrical engineers round to find out exactly what is going on causing the huge power surges. Then them being invited in for a cup of tea and a look round and only leaving 6 hours later in total awe and promising to fit a bigger transformer and a special cable down the street on the quiet as a mark of respect.

Tbh he really isn’t using that much power at least by American standards. In America it is quite normal to have a 200A service and some use upward of 75% of that service. He has a 100A service and had 95A going to the light bulb.

Whilst a UK residential installation at 240 Volts and 100 amp main fuse can handle it, the guys at the DNO might need to rethink their diversity calculations...
@deang5622
2 жыл бұрын
@@Dwight_D_Eisenhower You need to factor in the voltage. Power is voltage times current. America single phase supply is 110 volts, UK is 240 ( although the specification says 230 and the tolerances have been changed, but if measured it is 240). I know you can obtain 220 in the US by using two hot (live) lines that are 180 degrees phase shifted relative to each other. So what you will find, is the voltage is less in the USA and it can be compensated by increasing the current.
@ratibbaker8564

@@deang5622 typically American houses have 240 vac running to them plus a neutral (center tapped). Most have 200 amp (40 breaker) services. Some houses have 2 - 200amp panels and I have worked in houses with 2 - 400 amp panels

Fun fact: if your electric bill is high enough, the electric company will actually notify the police, and they'll show up to check your place for drugs. Apparently it takes a lot of electricity to grow drugs. 😂 Edit: I should make clear that if you rack up a large bill over time, then you'll be fine as far as the police is concerned. But say you live in an average sized home, and your bill is something ridiculous like 5 thousand dollars in one month, then yeah, you'd better be getting ready for a knock on your door. 😱

FYI: The Luxor Lamp located in Las Vegas, Nevada has the strongest light beam in the world at a staggering 42.3 billion candela. With the ability of using curved mirrors, the Luxor Lamp focuses the light from 39 xenon lamps into a narrow beam in which a person could read a paper from 10 miles up. Also, on a clear night, the beam can be seen from 275 miles away from all aircraft cruising at attitude, such as LA. The Lamp was first powered on in October 1993 and has operated reliably ever since. Each Xenon Lamp is worth $1,200 and 7,000 Watts and when its operating at full power, the system costs $51 per hour with $20 per hour for the electricity used for it 315,000 Watts. Since 2008, only some of the lamps are lit in order to save on energy and it might also be the world’s best bug attractor, which has created a new ecosystem of bats, moths and owls.

@MissRiaElaine American emergency line. If you call your country's emergency line, it will (theoretically) automatically redirect to the emergency line of the country you are in. Also, emergency numbers (in the US) are not restricted by carrier service limits. So, if you're stranded and don't have a signal with T-Mobile, perhaps Verizon or Sprint will pick it up for them?

Seems like he bypasses breakers during experiments all the time so it wouldn't surprise me if he was sneaking some free juice from the grid. But surely either way it wouldn't cost him all that much from the grid to do what he does.
I was half-expecting him to burst into flame at the intense heat that bulb must put out. Maybe he can make the world-biggest EZ Bake oven.

I keep coming back to this and other photon vids every couple years. So, if I could ask... what would be a practical use for a 20,000 watt light bulb like this? For what reason would you need filaments the size of garage door springs? EDIT: after checking through the comments, studio lighting for movies makes more sense.

It's funny how videos like these were kinda what started my interest in electronics, a few years back I barely understood anything and the numbers were kinda meaningless and I was just here for the show, now after a few years and dozens of electronics projects and engineering studies I actually somewhat understand what's going on and how much power he is actually playing with
