2 Sunflower Patches: Same Seed and Fertilizer, Different Result

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Here is a comparison of two sunflowers patches I planted on different parts of my property. Soil conditions caused a completely different outcome with the sunflower plants and flowers. Even though both patches had the same seed and the same amount of fertilizer, the plants look like different types of flowers.

You should market the “you pick” as a Mother’s Day event.

Compost from cover crops and wood chips add lots of natural nutrients needed for good growing. Wow look at all those colors. Awesome job. You should be proud of what you are doing.

Keep doing what you are doing and you will get the best knowledge by trial and error and then you can explain to others what and how things failed and why and of course your fruitful successes. Keep up the great work. Don't forget to have some wood bundles advertised during your flower picking days so people will be aware of that product you have also. Just trying to be helpful but I am sure you already thought of that. Just in case. Awesome job.

Dial in that lime next go around - not a bad budget starter patch

Our sunflowers did the same thing on our four spots this year. We had some in pallets with our special soil blend and the others in our plot garden. Our stalks got taller faster and they had larger heads. I remember your first County Line tiller video!😱😁

Have you tried planting any rye grain in the Fall to help your soil?

Never have but plan on it this year. Last year we did annual ryegrass in our zinnia/cosmos patch. It stretched good roots but didn't produce nearly as much mass as I wanted.

You said you spread gypsum and lime on a patch. What was your ph out there? My issue is too high ph. It's over 7 in places.

Everywhere we've tested on the property has always been 5.6-6.0 (good for evergreens, but not great for other crops). Gypsum adds calcium without impact to pH

Oh, and the whole property got gypsum. We added that at 300lbs per acre. Will test again in the spring and probably add more.
