Sunflower Diaries • Growing Different Varieties & Seed Collecting

Enjoy watching me grow different types of sunflowers from seed (common, Goldy Honey Bear, Mammoth, Floral Bouquet Mix, and Moulin Rouge). I also show how to collect the seed for future plantings and for feeding birds.

Just started some from the grocery store a couple months back, put them in the ground so now I'm just waiting🌻🌱🌻🌱🌻. Was excited to see this vid bc they've really grown on me, initially just grabbed for the critters lol❤. Use to not like them that much but their one of my grandma's favorites.

My dad grew sunflowers and sold them to local flower shops. I have framed photos of his sunflowers . He died in 2009 and we weren’t very close. He was difficult to get close to. Every time I see those pictures I think of him.

Nice video. I appreciate that you actually put in the effort to document what you grow and tell us how it's doing at various stages throughout the life cycle. I know it takes way more time and effort to make videos in this style but it really stands out among the hundreds of 1-2 minute long videos of flowers all over KZread where they barely explain anything and just go "Here's this lavender. It smells nice. It's great!", the end. I'm one of those people who actually wants to know everything there is to know about the varieties of flowers I am interested in growing and your channel delivers on that.

if sunflowers are grown in cooler climates they tend to be thicker and taller in the end. The slow growth of cool days tend to make the plant grow their roots as well. When you plant them in hot weather they are quick to grow and leggy as well. In my 9b zone they overwinter very nicely and they grow huge.

And surprisingly it the sunflower didnt need as much soil as I had initially thought! Definitely cant be grown in a basic planter trough, but a gallon size container would be perfect! Will try next year.

16:56 the way the petals were darker and the seeds underneath were whiter points to pest damage. When that happens to me, that means little inchworms or caterpillars got to the flower head. I’ve often found them when I collected seeds. It just means you left the flower out too long and the pests started getting to the seeds

Those moulin rouges were stunning!!! Rubbing those teeny flowers off is my favourite part!!! 🤗🤗 I usually get awesome harvests of seed, but once I had a massive flower head and all the seeds looked normal, nice and plump and black, but they were all empty 🤔 I have no idea why, my little nephew discovered it by squeezing the seed and he told me they “crushed” on closer inspection they were all empty, I pulled one apart and they were literally like an empty egg shell and I still can’t work out how the seeds “grew” 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️
