www.revzilla.com/common-tread...
Is a lithium battery the right choice for you? It’s a common question, so Lemmy’s here to give his thoughts on who should consider using a lithium battery, and what kind of application might be right for one. Don’t toss your lead acid or AGM battery just yet. Take a couple minutes and get caught up on the great battery debate.

I used to only ride 1000cc superbikes. I had to. Then I lost 160 pounds. I went from 350 to 190. Best thing you can do if you are a motorcyclist is lose weight. Now when I ride I can feel how even adding 5 pounds changes my bikes feel. I have a 250cc dual sport weight savings help. Don’t underestimate power/weight ratios. Try it. Every 10 pounds you lose your bike will feel that much more alive, so will you.

I lost 55lbs and 6 inches off my waist, from 185 to 130. Believe it or not, I was well below what Americans call normal, before I lost the 55lbs.; I was not considered overweight, even by my doctor. Like you said, it makes a huge difference regarding how you look and feel. I'm on a 250cc motorcycle, too, and it moves me along just fine.

Some people say their lithium battery won't crank the starter or cranks slow when it's cold, but if you just turn the ignition on and let the headlight shine for about 30 seconds, it will wake up the lithium battery and it will then crank the starter as normal.

I got the one that’s the same size externally as the original battery so it would fit in the factory space without any need for blocks or anything like that. So no extra vibes are felt. Lithium is great if you store your bike during the winter. No trickle charger needed as they Lose charge very little over months. Whereas most old school batteries become very weak as they near time to be charged, lithium’s have full cranking power as it nears it time to charge. So one will start your bike vs the other just slow crank and die. Lithium is more recyclable and less toxic to the environment. They should out last old school lead batteries, in theory. If you have to replace your battery, pay the extra and go with the lithium. Battery and tires are important on a bike so do not sell yourself short. Just a few years ago around $400 now almost as competitive as old school. Car lithium batteries still too expensive as a much larger lithium battery needed but they will come down on price

I have had nothing but problem with my lithium battery. I keep one in my sport bike but would never use one in my long distance Vstrom touring bike. Li-on batteries are great if you don’t live in cold climate. I find mine really struggles in anything under 50 degrees. Also, you have to unplug it or keep it on a charger (that can charge LI-on batteries) just a tiny discharge will permanently kill the battery. They are too delicate for a bike that needs to be 100% reliable.

Andrey Karpov sorry I meant disconnect the terminals. They are supposed to hold a charge perfectly for months if they aren’t connected to the bike. So to winterize you just pull the terminals off and leave it. In the spring reconnect the terminals and it should fire right up. Should. I haven’t had great experiences with them but maybe that’s just me.

Have fired the bike up numerous times. Haven't put one mile on it. Fires up instantly. Haven't even put the trickle charger on it. Nice too not like I'll ever use it but had s built in diagnostics in the charger/maintainer and a store mode. Weighs 5 lbs. Probably never have to buy another battery for this bike ever. JMHO but not sure why anyone would buy anything else. P.S. this FXDWG has 1850 miles on it. Looking forward to the thaw so I can turn it into 18K miles.

It's definitely a no the only plus is the weight. And then loads of disadvantages.

No comparison as lithium is the best. Use the internet that you carry with you. Find a reputable site and see the real facts. So many people spread hearsay facts or forum facts when you have a smartphone in your hands. Lots of fake stuff on the internet but more true stuff. I am not interested in Joe’s or Susie’s one experience with their one lithium battery. Broad statistics with good sample sizes tell the truth, not one or 2 people’s own experience. Please to not email me a response. The above is just a statement and I do not care if you want to believe it or not. After all there are still people that think seatbelts are dangerous and that they would rather be thrown from the wreckage vs being inside the wreckage.

Lithium batteries deteriorate really fast in tropical climate. They lose charge much faster in cold. Also if you are fully discharging and recharging it often(ie not running your bike every day), it will be unable to hold a charge in less than 500 cycles give or take.

If you are all about less weight, the Ballistic lithium is good, or a much smaller lithium for a custom bike with a smaller look. Otherwise, buy the Yuasa less expensive batteries. Walmart is a good place to get a car battery with a long warranty. Walmart's cheap motorcycle batteries will probably only last a year and a half, making the Yuasa batteries from Japan cheaper and better over 3 years or more.
