    I just had bi-lateral TKR (both knees) 10 days ago. I’m already walking and going up/down stairs. A great alternative to the glide is to buy a cheap skateboard and use that. I got one for under $20 and it works just as good as their slide! Good luck to everyone that’s going through it!

    It's great to see Bob today! Pre-surgery exercises are so important. I did mine and started post-op exercises the day after surgery. The surgeon saw me after the O.R. and said, "I did my part, now it's your turn". :) Best advice I can pass on to anyone else is make sure you take your pain meds on time to keep ahead of the pain and time your exercises to be 30-45mins after you take your meds.

    Best exercises I've seen online so far, as well as in actual PT! I'm 6 weeks post-op, with only 90° flexion so far. That's the biggest hurdle for me. Extension, no problem... almost all the way there. Now I'll know what I need to do the next time.

    You guys are the best. I don’t know if it’s because I’m an orthopedic nightmare or what but I watch your videos almost daily. I have chronic low back pain s/p multiple fusions, and now have been told I need bilateral total knee replacements. Because I have such a bad back and it took over 2 years for me to come back from my last fusion I want to be ready for this. I have lost 60 lbs and am going to lose at least 20 more before surgery. I have started walking, got a Fitbit, trying to do between 2 and 5 miles a day, depending on my knee pain, and weather, and have started specific knee exercises, especially those recommended by the two of you. I want to be ready for this and try to make my recovery as positive as possible. Thanks for the videos, and the recommendations for tools to use when exercising.

  • @ccswede
    @ccswede4 жыл бұрын

    Your recommendations are great especially doing exercises before surgery. I have had 8 lumbar operations and had weakness as a result. Also had severe hamstring contractures . Straightening the legs was the major problem. The ice on the knee was very painful. Finally I was able to get on a stationary bicycle. When I was able to make a full circle on the pedals that was the break through. I am a physician and with 8 prior back operations I was slow to deal with the knees. Don’t wait to long to have surgery if you need an operation. Delay will only make you weaker and recovery harder.

    Hi Bob & Brad, love your channel. I prepared for my TKR by doing regular bike riding, typically 15-30 mi mt bike 4-5 days/week, and lots of targeted exercises. Had surgery 14 weeks ago, I worked hard with exercises and PT and at 5 weeks I had full extension and over 120 deg bend, now I'm at 135 and trying to get it even with my other leg (almost there). I felt great, pain was going away until week 10, I was able to walk up and down stairs without pain (prior had pain going down). I don't know if I got carried away but went up some quite steep hills on the mt bike 15-18%, and a couple days later my ITB was killing me. First I cut way back on my work, a week of rest, lots of stretching and needling with my PT, then started added more walking, less riding and it is slowly getting better. But still feeling some pain on the outside of the surgical knee (ITB?). I notice my knee gets sore there first thing in the AM, sometimes wakes me up. Am I missing something? My PT is good, but not nearly as experienced as you guys. I'm doing well but really want to keep progressing and be able to get back on the bike. Thanks?

    Hi Bob and Brad. Thank you so much for your PT video sessions. As explained before almost two years ago, when my wife went for left leg total knee replacement, she was finding it extremely difficult to recuperate, however, after having followed your videos, I would say at least 95 percent recovery was achieved. We also undertook pilgrimage to India and did trekking up to 4000 metres above sea level and she coped with a little difficulty. Sadly, we got caught in a snow / rain blizzard and she slipped and fell. With some pain, we managed to complete 4 other treks completing our Pilgrimage. Here we are, after two years, she has been experiencing excruciating pains in the right knee. Not sure if this was related to the injury or arthritis. The orthopaedic surgeon advised that another TKR (total knee replacement) was necessary. My wife had it done and to date it is a week now after discharge. We are doing the same PT as per your recommendatory videos. The good news is that it is working well. I also must say that I used your videos for physical therapy / physio for the C1, C2, C3, C4 cervical vertebrae replacement. I would say it is about 95% successfully recovered. Thank you guys. You guys are doing a great job. Keep it up. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

    I hope by now you’re doing better. I’m at 6 weeks post op and had a lot of unbearable pain even though I did do pre op exercises. I had 25 staples really hurting and felt like digging into me when I tried to bend the knee. Plus whoever closed it up, left me with nodules that still won’t loosen up and an ugly uneven scar. The trauma of waking up mid surgery and feeling the force of the hammer (thankfully no pain due to the epidural) and hearing to tools is still with me. Take care…

    I’m 4 weeks post op tkr left knee. Have around 100 flexing and 3-5% extension. Unfortunately before I had the surgery I had a bent knee which is part of the reason why I did the surgery. I’m very concerned now that I can’t straighten my knee all the way and it is so painful and back of my knee when I do the gravity hang and push down to try and straighten it. Can you tell me is there a topical cream that I could rub on the back of my knee and muscles while I straighten my leg so I’m not in excruciating pain? I’ve heard Theraworx might be an option, any opinion?

    My tkr was a week ago. My entire leg hurts and I’m quite bruised - I presume from all of the manhandling during surgery. The knee is still so swollen and I’m supposed to start therapy next week. The pain is so bad - I don’t recall my first tkr being this bad. 😢

  • @misterlarryb
    @misterlarryb Жыл бұрын

    Love your enthusiasm and disarming, friendly banter. By the comments below, your videos help a lot of people. But my TKR journey (9 weeks post-op now) doesn't seem to match this video's post-op advice. My first week I had a minor DVT, a lot of hip to toes swelling, sharp pain, extensive discoloration, and couldn't lift my leg. Slept in hourly installments. As they say, "everyone's different." So if I had to give advice, it would be to rely on PT - first two weeks at home, next 2-4 months at a nearby facility. Let the therapist guide you and give you the exercises and moral support you need for your specific situation. If you don't think your therapist is a good fit, go to another one. Know that TKR recovery is one of the toughest and may be more mentally challenging to stay positive and patient and take it slow than it is physically challenging. Hang in there!

    Hmmm... I'm thinking a car mechanic's stool from a discount store. They are round instead of square, and the height is adjustable, like an office chair. I don't use one. My at-home PT had me use the bed with a rolled up towel or pillow inder my heel. Around 4 weeks post-op, I'd sit on the top of my stairs (bilevel house), swing my feel onto the floor, and samsies with a towel or pillow under my heel. Keep it simple and inexpensive!

    One of the post-hab exercises that I found very helpful was rowing machines. Each time (back/forth) you compress forward you really increasing the stretched on that knee and ultimately improving their range of motion. Plus you can control the amount of compression until you can as you progress (don't try to hit 130 degrees the first day!) . I found that the rowing machine gave me about 15 more degrees of range of motion after I started doing it. I've been pushing for over 130 degrees and I think I'm there but I won't know until my 1-year checkup LOL. So I'm hoping it's working. Kind of wondered what you guys thought about rowing machines and how they might help with flexing that knee, particularly after surgery? Update: I am back to my pre surgery flex (actually was by about 4-5mos after surgery). It still (even at 3 yr mark) feels foreign in my knee.

    @@BobandBrad I injured my rotator cuff in my throwing arm about 23 years ago playing baseball, & never had proper therapy to treat it. The pain comes and goes and Ive accommodated my neck/chest exercises accordingly over the years, but after all the at home treatments Ive tried in the past I decided to now try red/NIR light treatment at home. I bought one and used it today for the 1st time and found about 60-70% relief. It may be temporary, or I may be able to build on that healing. My question is: In an IDEAL world, is there a point of TOO many treatments per week? If it were up to me I would/could do 1-20min treatment per day, but is this better than a different timetable? Less..more...? Thanks!

    This might sound dumb but why would I care about working towards getting my knee to straighten out before the tkr? I mean that part of my knee is going to be literally chiseled and sawed away and replaced with metal and plastic when it's all done I should have complete range of motion because the bad parts are being replaced with good parts right? I should be worried about maintaining range of motion with the new parts right?

    ELhandi 18.7 My knee feels really good i had the other one done a couple years ago it actually feels better than the original lol im.not running yet but im.sure i could if i wanted to but they actually recommend that you dont do alot of running or jumping you are capable of it but it can make your new joint wear out faster ,and trust me getting total knee replacement is extremely painful

    Unfortunately I’ll find out about how painful it is to do a replacement because I need to have a revision done because they put the wrong size in 🤦‍♀️ I thought that the 1st surgery was painful I can’t imagine how much more pain the revision will be.

    Hi, great vid, I had full replacement approx 3wks ago and when I do any exercises my incision feels like it’s going to rip open and in some places it has ripped open a little bit just the outer superficial incision. So my question to u both is how can I exercise without tearing open my incision?? Love ❤️ from 🇨🇦

    I’m at 4 weeks - one spot opened a little bit in week 2 or 3 - I put butterfly bandage on it and kept going. Rather have a small skin tear than scar tissue build up. Just be sure to keep incision area and drainage spots clean (I use the Hibiclens they gave me for pre-op prep).

    I did my per surgery exercises. But I did that stool trick immediately after my surgery all night because I couldn’t take the hospital bed. They hurt my lower back doing my knee. Anyhow the next morning my therapist couldn’t believe my range of motion already. I got full range of motion back in that knee within a month

    Keep it simple and inexpensive- some other commenters suggest skateboards or plastic bags to slide over carpet or bedding. If you have hardwood floors, any sock should slide fairly easily.

But I am in still a lot of pain I have pain meds I have pain for the nerves. I have arthritis real bad. I have osteo rheumatoid fibromyalgia and osteoporosis . I have everything that I can take for meds there's nothing else that I can take. How can I calm this down from pain and swelling? I have my left leg to get done later.

    You posted this at 4 weeks post op, and now it's 8 months later. Any update? I hope you're doing a lot better. I'm 9 weeks post op, and in my case, I didn't start feeling some significant progress until around the 6 week mark. Even then, it's been ups and downs with swelling and pain. And sleep is still a challenge.

    In the uk you don’t seem to get the physio you do in America probably because of the NHS service we have here I visited physio 2 weeks after surgery and then 4 weeks and was told at that point I was doing ok and to keep up the exercises that I was doing ,no longer than 20 mins each session with the physio and that’s it
