2 Hyenas Brutally Attack Another Hyena

Edrich Schafer (39), Lodge manager in the Timbavati, was in for a huge shock the night of Friday 13th of October 2017.

He recalls the harrowing event to LatestSightings.com: “This whole ordeal took place right in front of a private camp in the Timbavati, Greater Kruger Area. We were just about to put the meat on the fire when we heard hyenas causing a big commotion.

When the noises did not stop and moved right up to the front of the camp, we decided to go and investigate. Just listening to the noise from a distance, our initial thoughts were the hyenas were busy hunting down an old or sick buffalo.
This does happen here occasionally, and those noises sounded like hyenas during a feeding frenzy mixed with the distress call of a buffalo.
With camera and flashlight in hand, we headed down to the river in the front.
It took us about two minutes to really figure out what was going on as these things moved in and out thick bush. Then....to our shock, horror and confusion.....2 Hyenas on top of another hyena!
They meant war...
The one hyena's face, covered in blood and screaming like a buffalo. The noise and smells at night with this right in front of us was something we won't quickly forget. The reason for this can only be related back to either a threat or competition. Whatever the reason was that night, it was not taken lightly by these guys.
One also realized that intentional torture was part of it....biting ears, face, genitals and ripping guts nonstop....or are hyenas just that tough that this is what it takes to kill one? There was not a grain of mercy here and this was serious business for these hyenas to deal with.
The 2 attackers were tired-out by the end. This ordeal lasted for over 50mins without any rest periods in between. They left the badly mauled victim still breathing.
He died a slow death that night. Hyenas are probably the toughest animals on this planet, so when they turn on each other, things get messy. For this one hyena to stay alive for that long is astounding.
For me, living here in the wild, I have NEVER seen this kind of brutality before. The next morning, the smell was already strong. We had to tow the carcass away from the camp into the bush about a kilometer away. The carcass was there for another 24 hours and nothing touched it. Two days later it was gone. Drag marks heading in two different directions, the smell still in the air and lots of tracks all over the place. Those tracks, of course, belonged to…..Hyenas.

Great capture of one aspect of natural animal behaviour. Comparatively uncensored, just the real thing directly presented to us, no preachy voice-over commentary, no dramatic music. This is the way it should be done.
Horrible way to die, torn apart by your own kind. Ironically we aren't any different either.

Easily one of the most brutal nature vids I've seen and I've seen a fair few thus far. That was really tough to watch. Seemed like they ate his eyes out as well. Never seen something like that.

They are. At least animals do it for a reason, and with unawareness of what they are doing. Humans murder animals for no reason with total awareness of why it's wrong.

That was chillingly vicious but it's nature, thanks for sharing. I can't think that that was a clanmate that had overstepped the mark, I think it was an intruder from another clan. Usually Hyenas just go for the ears and the hind legs when they attack lower ranking clanmates. I can't believed it survived for so long.
That was freaking insane.
He held out for as long as possible. Even with his face torn off and his intestines ripped out he kept trying to fight.

Unbelievable how tough these animals are. Any other animal getting it’s face torn would’ve gone down instantly. But this little guy was fighting for dear life until the last moment.

Christian Santillan. Sorry it took so long did not know you had made a comment. You are so right. I made a silly, rash comment regarding Hyenas'. Yes it happens with most animals. I think at the time I was so shocked I wrote a silly comment. Hyenas' are an important part of the ecosystem, and I do like them. Thank you for your comment, and waking me up out of an unhappy stupa.

Hyenas are sometimes in different clans so that hyena was probably in a different clan. Fun fact : hyenas are obnivors
I wonder what that poor hyena did to set the other 2 on him/her? Was it male on male or perhaps females attacking an unwanted male? I know female hyenas are bigger and stronger than the males and dominate proceedings in their society.

I think it depends on what kind of horrible it is. Like you couldn't rip a cake buffaloes Hyde open very easily not even Lions can do it. They have to start at the belly or the testicles

One thing i have noticed is that predators seem to be more brutal and vicious when it comes to their own kind than anything else, take Lions and Hyenas for example, they are eternal enemies and will go out of their way to kill each other if they get the chance as they are competitors yet strangely both of them seem to be more vicious and brutal when it comes to attacks on their own kind, when Lions attack Lions- it's a long drawn out brutal attack and as this video shows- it's the same for Hyenas, as according to the information - over 50 minutes of brutal painful torture.
