#2 Garden Cleanup Begins | Outbuilding Tour, Olive Tree Trimming

There's so much plastic in the vegetable garden, tubs, bins, and under the clay soil. Cleanup is coming along slowly.
We'll go on a tour of the outbuilding and the area where I want to have chickens.
In Autumn of 2023, I bought a homestead in the heart of Italy in a region called Umbria. It was build in the mid 80's. It needs to be cleaned up and some good TLC. I would like to renovate it to make it more a rustic Italian country house.

The set of boxes you weren't sure about look like nest boxes for the hens to lay eggs in. I'd suggest keeping the wire above and the partitions to the chicken area. That way you could use one or more sections for chickens. The chickens could be in one section while grass or veges grow in the other. Then you could let the chickens into the second section while the first section recuperates with grass or veges growing in it. Another section could also be used for berries so that the wild birds can't get at them.

Thank you! That's a great idea to rotate the sections! I hope your weekend is going well.

Hi! What an interesting place! The chicken pen looks like a great place for chickens. I know from experience that it needs to be well built to keep out predators. The overhead wire will help a lot with hawks and other birds od prey. I hope all goes well for you. Janice from Arkansas USA

You are so right. When I first saw it, I wanted it all down. Now we are cleaning it and keeping the outside structure as well as making it more secure. Thank you!

Wow what a wonderful property! The wooden cupboard with box like shelves at the end of the chicken enclosure you showed are nesting boxes for the chickens to lay eggs in. They look in great condition if you are planning on having chickens. The chicken enclosure is great with the netting over the top for predators. The olive trees look pretty healthy. What beautiful trees. You are doing a great job just remember to take it slowly and enjoy your new home.

That one thing in the chicken pen looks to be brooding boxes.

Thank you! When I first saw the chicken coop area, all I wanted was to take it all down. But when we get chickens it will be good to have a safety wire above them. Thank you!

So wonderful! A bit scary hey! But I know you'll do so great, making it your own slice of heaven! Keep up the awesome work! You got this! P.s. I've been watching a lot and the first thing everyone does is rip the chicken enclosure apart. Get their chickens, let them free range, chickens dye, they cry, it's sad. The birds of prey are serious and if they get free food they get it. If you want a profit raising, selling chickens and rabbits, side hustle maybe...they will need that cover:) See you soon, keep us posted! 😊thanks

Thank you for the tips, really! I am all ears. Yes, they will be protected as I don't want any of my animals to be sad. The enclosure is dirty and will be cleaned for sure but I'm not sure what it will turn into. As of now, I'm not thinking of livestock for profit. I am still getting to know the place. A fun journey for sure. Have a great day!

Wow...the people you bought this place from were slobs. So much trash they must have laughed hard when they left you to clean up the mess and basically start from scratch.

It is a wee bit daunting to look at, to say the least. However, looking forward is the way to go! With a little elbow grease, it will be transformed. Let's look to the future!
