Great video . I got my jig master 500 passed down to me from my uncle that passed away I didn’t use it for a long time because I have newer reels but finally I got around to cleaning and servicing it and have used it for two seasons now And I have to admit it’s becoming my favorite real because not only does it hold sentimental value but it’s a workhorse!

I know this is an old video but for people just watching it this is valuable information. I have way too many rods and reels and sometimes I end up spending too much time trying to decide what to take on a fishing trip. Two good reels and maybe 4 rods and you can go after anything. Sure, you probably won’t catch a 12’ tiger shark without the right equipment but then again you better be prepared for that with everything else or you can get hurt. So, two decent reels in the sizes he recommends will go a long way and make packing for a fishing trip so much easier. I have been on several trips where some rods and reels never make it out of my car and I wonder why I brought them in the first place. And, with the reels taken care of you can focus on everything else like tackle and technique.

Penn Fierce 2 4000, Ugly Stik GX2 7' Medium Heavy. You talked me into saving a few bucks vs the Battle 2 in an earlier video. In the market for a surf rod and reel, so this was helpful. Thanks for the great content as usual!

Penn battle 6000 and a shimano spheros 6000. The largest fish I caught with the battle was a 20-25 lbs striped bass. It handled it very well and the spheros is largely untested (fish wise.) Both have been dropped and dunked..... and only this season (first in six or seven seasons ) I needed to open the battle to remove some grease and sand from having dropped it.

Hi. I could really use your advice. I have 2 cedros csx medium 1 to 4 ounce. I go to st Georges island every year. Im Not sure what reels to get for them. I found the Penn 7500ss reals. Not sure if those are to big for 10 rod. I don t want to break the bank since I only use the cedros for 1 week out of the year. I also just got a (brand new old stock) Penn Slammer 460 on a 9' Savage Gear Salt 1DFR shore jigging 40-80 gramm rod (and that reel is only 100,-us$ new on sale). Hey! Im new to salt and heading for my first trip to the Christmas Islands south of Hawaii. Its a flyfishing location for most but im going conventional. I will be fishing in the flats for bonefish and some deeper water for GT's. I may get to go offshore to try for some open water GT's as well. I picked up a Penn Slammer 3 4500 for the flats and a 5500 for the bigger water. First, do you think the 5500 is big enough if I hook into a 20 pound GT? Its a 7 day trip and I have no idea if I will ever get to fish salt again anytime soon soooo ... yeah. NOW I need to buy 3 piece travel rods to match. Do you have ANY suggestions on those? One for the bonefish in the flats and one for the GT's?

I use the 300's for open water lots, I dont fish saltwater with them but they've landed me quite a few 40" pike. They balance pretty good on a 6.5 -7' medium action rod. They are a tough reel and will handle MH jobs, but due to their lack of a functional line roller, they wear out line pretty fast on hard running fish at higher drag settings. For this reason I stick to 10-12 lb line and medium rods with them.

right on point as always! i have a question for you, i have noticed that most penn reels have not ideal line lay, they leave small gaps on top and the bottom of the spool in a convex sort of way, wich is ok i suppose with mono, but fishing thin braid (under 15 or even 15# ) causes air knots every other cast, wich is very frustrating IMO.. have you ever experienced this? and if so, how have you addressed this issue? i have a 4000 size penn, i love the build quality, the feel, the loud clicker, all in all, good reel for the money, but i would not like to use it with mono or 30# braid.. any advice? settle for a ticker braid? thanks!

I have a penn pursuit 4000 with 30 lb braid and haven’t had a knot yet while casting. I’m very sure that what’s causing it is the way the reel is being spooled; you want the line coming off of the spool counter clockwise, this will prevent line twists

He isn’t lying. Just found the Penn Fierce II 4000LL and 6000LL for $18 and $22 respectively at Dicks in Myrtle Beach. Every sport store yo go to, just ask. Never hurts. Same store I got a tiger elite jigging rod for $45. 🤷🏼‍♂️
