After the lens, the best macro gear I use is a small piece of plastic tarp that I keep in my bag. Laying down without getting wet from dew or covered with sand keeps me making photos longer. My camera bag or jacket double as a flower level tripod that’s infinitely customizable for each image.

Two weeks ago I bought the Nikon Z 105mm macro lens. I've used it for macro, portrait, and landscape photography. Very impressed by this versatile lens and how well it handled all three. A great piece of kit that just screams to be used in creative ways. I've been enjoying your videos for sometime now. I enjoy your work, advice, and inspiration to try new and interesting things. Thank you

I shoot macros with a Canon RF 100mm F/2.8 macro, very similar to the Nikkor 105mm. I suggest you remove the lens hood when shooting macro. You won't need it with the shooting angles you use for macro. Plus, the hood keeps you farther from your subject, and the whole point of a macro lens is to get CLOSE. I personally prefer to stop down to about F/9 or smaller because from such close distances, DOF is extremely shallow. Of course that shallow DOF can make for interesting effects also. I look forward to more macro images. Have fun!

Great video Kim, I wish i had come across your channel sooner. You have one of those naturally soothing voices that makes me relaxed just listening to it. I also haven't played with this lens as much as i should and this was proper encouragement to get out with it.

Kim, excellent presentation. I just acquired my 1st macro lens (Canon 100mm f2.8L) and your journey into macro photography was very well timed. But what I really appreciated about your video is that you acknowledged the beauty of the sky and nature before talking about your subject. That says a lot to me about your character. Well done.

Hi Kim! I did a bit of macro photography using lichen as my subject a few years ago. I love it. It's one of my favourite subjects. You should see lichen under Ultra-Violet light! That's something else! Those images of the Snowdrops are absolutely beautiful by the way.

give the 105mm f2.8G lens a go. yes you'd need to adapt it to your Z body, but the results are phenomenal. it's my all-time favourite lens - any manufacturer, any design, any focal length. yes I'm biased but I truly think it's a masterpiece :-) A macro "rail" is also a worthwhile and relatively cheap investment too.

Macro photography can be so interesting and frustrating at the same time. You get to see something you don't normally see. The benefit of the 105 vs. a 50mm macro lens is that your focus distance is further away from your subject. For any given magnification, the lens is further away. This can be helpful if trying to not scare the bug away The downside is generally the cost.

Nice to see you visit my neck of the woods here Kim. We're off to the lake to take the dog for a walk there tomorrow morning. It's a lovely place to walk around. There were a lot more swans around the lake until a few years ago. The lake was drained and the swans started eating the fishermen's hooks that appeared in the mud underneath and this killed them all other than a mother swan and two signets. It was very sad. There seem to be more swans around the park again now but nothing like the numbers before this happened. Did you visit the other park close by (nearer the village)? There's a much smaller lake there, but it's nice all the same. There's some lovely flowers there in springtime onwards in the Scensory Garden if you like that kind of thing re: macro.

How beautiful the clouds are. True, but there was something more special. As a content continental European, I was on a walk in nature, yesterday. I know my country well and did not bring out the big gear - my company was more important than shooting whatever. The night before had been freezing cold, but now after midday, we had a blue sky and almost no wind. While the thermometer indicated 9C (48F), the warmth from the sun was clearly felt. Similar skies, clouds. But that was not "it". The sun does not come too high in the sky yet at our London-like latitude and that makes the colour temperature slightly warmer. But that was not "it". Nor were the slightly longer shadows. In fact the light was rather hard. But that was not "it". At some point, I took off my pair of glasses, and said to my companion, the haze I'm seeing is purely from dirt on my spectacles. Because, that was "it" - the almost total absence of moist in the atmosphere caused a clarity that made us see "forever". No thermals that vibrate the air and blur vision or images. No haze. No extremely fine dust in the moist or transported by winds. What was extremely special was the light, the quality of the light. I saw that kind of light in the video too.

I own the Laowa 100 mm f/2.8 - it's an excellent lens, but it is a manual focus lens and it does not have build in VR, if that's okay with you its a decent alternative to the Nikon 105 mm, wich is I think the best macro lens out there
