Dude Micah, as a former Army medic, any time you experience trauma remove all your jewlery from the affected area immediately. As you saw with your ring once your hand swells it'll be almost impossible to remove. In cases of extreme swelling it could lead to localized necrosis leading to the loss of a finger or worse. Please be safe my man 🙏

AND put some antihistamines in your first aid kit, to deal with any sensitivity reactions like you're experiencing. ALSO take some Ibuprofen to reduce the inflammatory response. Stagger the dose times between paracetamol & brufen to deal with pain ie 2H > you take your Tylenol, take the ibuprofen. BUT of an accident prone first day M-HAV!

I mean that stuff should be common sense and require no medical training or experience in the first place. It baffles me how little people actually think. Reaction over Rationality. It's the way of the world now.

Hey Micah..... 20 + years as a first responder along with being an avid outdoorsman, backpacker, mountaineer, camper, fisherman and hunter. Understand this one suggestion I have! Never, ever rinse a wound in dirtied water... What you did dipping your hand in that river invited a huge host of microbes which will reek havoc not only on your epidermis (top layer of skin but also on the 2nd layer (the dermis) and if by chance any of those dorsal or pectoral fins punctured down to the fat layer of your body). Doing this, you are invited a huge chance of infection at all three levels... With that as CJ said get all rings, bracelets, etc. off of the affected area of the body..... As always suggested carry an extensive first aid kit (especially in your situation, being on your own and out in an area we're no one is around to help). You need to depend on yourself to treat any type of wound. Just because you have a cell phone does not guarantee you can get help. So to end this rant, having Betadine and a form of Lidocaine always as part of your first aid kit is a must along with a wound flush such as DermaKlenz Wound Cleanser (this is what I use but get whatever you can find/afford). Wound wash to cleanse, Betadine to kill bacteria and lidocaine to help with topical/subdermal pain in this situation. To end this Bro, you need a good Med bag and maybe a little education on what is needed if you are hurt while out on these excursions.... Reach out if you need some help putting a bag together and please do not rely on those you buy on-line. Take the time to research and make your own. God Bless, thank you for what you do/share with all of us!!! Erik

That catfish poke looked gnarly...and you are right about the venom in their spines, they have a venom that can be quite painful as you have found out, it can even cause a little bit of necrosis in the tissue, so keep it as clean as possible... hopefully you can heal quickly

I felt that as soon as it happened! Old South Georgia trick to numb the pain after you get finned is to rub it on the belly of the catfish. I’m sure all of the other commenters will have a field day with this approach, but hey… I’ve also drank water out of a garden hose too… 😂

Glad to see you came prepared with a full first aid kit. Hope you feel better soon from that poke. Also, you want to use braided line on your baitcaster because it doesn't have memory like monofilament does. Put a few yard of monofilament on as a base, then tether braided to that and spool the rest with that. Have fun learning the baitcaster!

Micah soak your hand in as hot if water as you can stand add Epsom salt if you have some. Other thing you can do is after you clean the wound look for some plantain make a wet poultice either by chewing or mashing in plate or bowl then place on the wound it will start to feel better pretty quickly. Plantain is usually easy to find..

Two things I've learned, don't dip an injury in river water (great way to invite infection) and carry a small first aid kit. Just a few bandages, a small wrap and antibiotic. Seems silly but you'll be glad you brought it when stuff like this happens! Only adds a few ounces to your pack. Mines in a dry box inside of my kayak. Don't even think about it until you need it.

Good call on the first aid kit. I keep one in every vehicle we have, one in each tractor on our farm, and one in each of my tackle/hunting bags. The only thing I suggest doing is add a tube of Neosporin +pain relief. I really like it and it helps quite a bit. It doesn't get rid of all pain, but it makes it quite a bit more tolerable

One thing people don't know about is a sign of blood poisoning is if a purple steak shows up/forms from the injury sight upward (toward the heart/body). That's when you know you slacked on cleaning that wound up. Rinse well with clean water, trying to get it into the wound, and of course hydrogen peroxide and/or alcohol towelette, dry it off, antibiotic cream, then make sure it's as dry as possible and apply either a good bandage, or gauze sized down to match the wound area.

Trash the mono. I have a lot of casting reels and none of them have monofilament line on them. Braid performs so much better. Backlashes are generally easier to untangle. I've used several different braided lines and have settled on suffix 832. All of them out perform monofilament hands down. The main thing is to spool it tight! There are a few good you tube tutorials on the subject. Try it you'll like it. 😊

Look up “Beyond Braid” it’s made right here in the USA in Florida! A whole bunch of different colors and I have 10lb on my bait caster and haven’t had a single problem with it!

Oh man I feel your pain on the catfish barb, I got one stuck in my wrist right next to my artery and tendon. We had to cut the entire barb off the fish. Worst pain of my entire life. I almost passed out several times, the ER had to rip out every barb as it was pulling my flesh. Those fish are NO JOKE!!! It sure made me a great striper fisherman though!! I quit targeting them real fast..
