That pretty much sums up our cultural Christianity. I think they both represent what most patriotic Americans believe, a faith that exists, but isn't practical. As if their God was a genie, Santa, or a wishing upon a star God who understands their hearts and knows deep down inside that they are good people. Meditating on God's Word day and night yields different results, though.

This vid is a case study in vague western spiritualism mixed with "dogmatic agnosticism". Its difficult to listen to for those who are zealous for Christ, but its good to know what people's opinions are in order to be a better witness. Thanks, Pastor Doug for your critique - on point.

Humility used to mean rejecting your own self-adequacy and recognizing dependence on the Lord, now we've secularized it to merely include the rejecting of self-adequacy, which makes it synonymous with relativism, the epistemology of secularism.

I love how he says you have to be humble by being in the "I don't know" space because everyone that came before him is absolutely wrong ... so ... not only does he know that everyone else is wrong, not at all removing himself from his own "I don't know" space with that absolute knowledge, but he's also just humble enough to firmly assert that everyone else is wrong. or... something like that.

Even in his comedy; most observational type comics at least hint at a deeper understanding of what's going on, but his observations couldn't be more superficial.

Theo is sometimes on a comedic level of genius that is so profound, I have doubted how intentional it even is. That said, I can tell he is a tortured soul. Like really tortured. Tortured by his history, by sexuality, by not being able to relate entirely to the godless Joe Rogan crowd/space he so often occupies. Yet I can tell his heart is simply hostile toward the true God. He needs the gospel. Not watered down.

I used to listen to Jim Gaffigan when I was a pagan hedonist. I thought he was super clean and he Is by most standards for sure. But once I got saved he had these bits where he would use Jesus and the disciples for the butt of his jokes and I could not stand it. There are very few good comedians around that are actually clean. Most of the "christian" comedians just make jokes about the bible and Jesus and end up making Christianity a joke. Check our Fred Klett. He's not a Christian but he has super clean comedy and he's hilarious. Also Clayburn Cox. Really funny and good clean comedy.

A good direction to take a conversation like this one: get them to admit there are 2 sides, good and evil. That grounds the conversation in reality, and forces them to admit a lot of other truths about God. For example, someone once told me they thought all gods are essentially the same. Well, if they would admit the existence of good and evil, that proves at least that there are gods on both sides, therefore not all gods are the same. It also opens the door for them to admit that there are ways they can be deceived by an evil higher power (what we call demons).

  • @winstonsol8713

Let’s run with that. Next critical question: if everything is a step, and if everything someone says is God reaching them where they are, why bother suggesting to anyone that they’re wrong? If suggesting to them that they’re wrong is ever appropriate, not everything everyone says is God at work. What you’re suggesting is obscurantism. But in reality, some statements are wrong. These statements should be corrected. What you’re saying is that it doesn’t matter that they’re wrong because that’s where they are with God. If that’s true…why bother trying to understand anything? Whay constitutes a real discussion if everything something says is “God reaching them where they are”? If God is always reaching them where they are, why bother being discriminating about ANYTHING? 2 + 2 = 5 isn’t God reaching people where they are. It’s people not thinking. You’re literally claiming that Doug is in error because he wants these men to practice reason and self awareness, and not babble incoherently. If God is reaching these mean where they are…isn’t the same true of Doug? What right do you have to correct Doug, if that’s where he is with God? So…Doug isn’t allowed to correct these men…but you’re allowed to correct Doug. 🤡
