Challenge idea: Protect the VIP (very important pawn) At the beginning of the game, one of your pawns is selected at random to be the VIP. You must protect this pawn at all costs because you can only deliver checkmate with the VIP. Losing the VIP means you can get a draw at best. Promoting the VIP transforms it into a "very important piece" so it stays the VIP.
@arturkaroly8898
Жыл бұрын
You can also play this game against another playel, where both of you have a VIP, but you don't know which pawn is the opponent's VIP. Figuring out the opponent's VIP can lead to a lot of mind games when deciding whether to sacrifice pieces or not just for taking a pawn, which you assume is the opponent's VIP.

Basic chess theory: Try not to lose pieces to maintain a material advantage. Advanced chess theory: Sacrifice all of your pieces to get an en passant checkmate.
I managed to solve the second puzzle in my first attempt without any assistance nor long pauses! As an 850-rated chess player, I felt so proud of myself. Watching these types of puzzles and learning through the solution are both helpful as it is enjoyable. :D

@@vitorrodriguez4278i started playing chess 2 weeks ago played not that many games and are 600 rated at the Moment. I solved every move of the Second puzzle first try and thought it was an easy one. But i have to say that im currently on a 10+ winstreak so i think i could def play higher then 600
The hard part in the second puzzle isn’t finding the best moves, it’s the freaking end game afterwards. I was able to get a queen for white, but then a Queen vs Rook endgame is so tough because the king and rook just dance around eachother in the middle of the board, so I can never get my queen and king close enough to threaten it, and I have to constantly worry about not just hanging my queen, but not letting the rook take my queen at ALL. Because even if I’m protecting it with my king, black can just trade its rook for my queen and stalemate.
at 3:07, he says the only move is to move the king up, but you can also block with the rook. and after he takes and checks again you move on b7 and than if he comes on b8 trying to trap you, you just escape by going where the rook was on c6 and you escape checkmate
@noobius6008
Жыл бұрын
Your coordinates are wrong.
In the first puzzle, after Na6, black can play Rb7. Ng6 and Bxc6 then no longer work and draw the game. Even if we follow the line of 1... Ra7 2. Bxc6 Rxc6 3. Nd7+ black has an amazing move, namely Rc8. It sacrifices the rook in order to prevent a mate in 3 if you play Kb7 as shown in the video. White will still win, but it's a long one (31 moves).
The main line is incorrect too. You said that after Nd7+, "Black has to take us", but actually the strongest defense for Black is playing Rc8. The line continues Rxc8+ Kb7 Rb8+ Kc6 Ndxc5. Now we're in a RNNvR endgame, which is a tablebase win for white, but it would take 16 more moves with perfect play.
At 7:40 the best move is actually Kf3. Both are winning and only 2 winning moves but Kf3 leads to a cleaner victory whereas Bf7 leads into a Queen and Rook endgame which is winning but very tough.
So I analyzed the first puzzle with Stockfish, and.... it found a way to draw the game somehow. I don't know why it did it like this, but this is apparently what my engine after analysis and making moves found what to do to save the game as Black. (first move was White's, of course) Thought it was fascinating because white was to play and WIN, except White doesn't win. Stockfish busted another puzzle it would seem. 1. Na6 Re7 2. Ng6 Rb7 3. Nxc5 Rbb8 4. Ne6 Ka7 5. Rg7+ Rb7 6. Rxb7+ Kxb7 7. Bd7 Ra8+ 8. Kb4 Ra1 9. Ne5 Rb1+ 10. Kc3 Re1 11. Nc4 Rc1+ 12. Kb3 Rb1+ 13. Kc2 Re1 14. Kd2 Rf1 15. Nc5+ Kc7 16. Be6 Rh1 17. Kc3 Kd8 18. Kd4 Rd1+ 19. @liamsun2543

2N vs pawn is very hard. Q vs R is quite doable, but it's Q vs R+P in the best case for black, which is harder than Q vs R. (In some positions it might even be a draw.)
What if in the first puzzle rather than taking the bishop black blocks the bishop with their rook?
Dude, I'm curious, where do you get so many incredible puzzles? I mean wow they're never ending
In the first puzzle, after 1. Na6, I don't see how White would win if Black plays 1...Rb7. As a sample line, 2. Ne6 Ka7 3. Naxc5 Re7 4. Bf7 Rxg8 5. Bxg8 is a draw.

3:19 what prevented him from blocking with the rook? if he'd done that there'd be no smothered mate

No this is not the En Passant rule. Pawns can only capture diagonally upwards, no exception. Even En Passant is no exception. En Passant means "in passing" and happens "literally" during the move of the opponent. It can only happen if your pawn is on the 5. rank (for example d5, or for black d4), the pawn of your opponent on the file next to your pawn is on its starting position on the 7. rank (for example c7, for white c2) and your opponent moves this pawn 2 squares forward (for example c5, for white c4). Your opponent play the move c5, this means his pawn on c7 moves 2 squares forward to c5. But he don't jump, he starts from c7, passes c6 and lands on c5. Note: If your opponent would play c6, your pawn on d5 could capture it from d5 to c6 diagonally upwards. The En Passant rule means, even if the pawn moves to c5, your pawn on d5 can capture it from d5 to c6 diagonally upwards right in the moment he is passing the c6 square. Of course, this means you can only capture it on your next move and not later in the game. This also means, your pawn don't capture the pawn next to him, it just looks like on the board, you take the opponents pawn from the c5 square, but you move your pawn from d5 to the c6 square, because your pawn have captured "in passing" or En Passant from d5 to c6 diagonally upwards. Note: If your pawn is on the 6. rank (for example d6, for black d3) and the opponents pawn move from c7 to c5, of course there is no En Passant, because the passing square is c6 and you could also not capture if he had moved to c6.
Challenge: assassin chess. Pick a random non-king piece and capture it before capturing anything else. Then pick a new one (and so on). Other versions: only pick major/minor pieces and no capturing pawns until all major/minor pieces are taken. No checks until all major/minor pieces are taken.
Jokes on you, I named my cat Mittens
for puzzle 2, after Rook a1, Bishop h6, what about Rook f8 - check? If white moves the king, then yeah, nothing really changes, white still wins. BUT If white blocks with the Bishop then Rook takes f4 check, King g2, Rook h4, King g3, Rook h6, King g4, Rook h1, King g5 white will draw by repetition by shuffling back and forth on g5 and g4, because going anywhere else at any point in this sequence loses both of White's pawns: the G pawn to Black's King which can now approach it with impunity, and the H pawn to Black's Rook Stalemate / Black win I'm sure there's some other way for Black to salvage this situation, but I genuinely wouldn't know, I barely started chess a few weeks ago

Blocking with an undefended piece makes no sense, because it will be taken and you are still in check, you have just lost a piece ;) What do you mean with stalemate? A stalemate is when you have no legal moves while not in check. A stalemate is a draw. Both kings are in open space, so there will be no stalemate.
that 2nd puzzle was more of a "deflection" tactic than a sacrifice
I love you videos so much you deserve so so many subscribers
the second puzzle is beautiful
I LIKED The second puzzle! The idea about sacrificing the Bishop to get rid of the enemy Pawn is super Genius
isin't there Rb7 when you check with the bishop
My cat was impressed for real
in the first puzzle, white sacrificed... all the pieces.
In second puzzle it looks like we have two solutions: Be3+ or Bg5
And then he sacrifices THE KNIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Challenge idea: Alternate diagonal and straight moves. On odd moves, you can only move along a file or a rank. On even moves, you can only move along a diagonal. Non-capturing pawn moves are straight moves, capturing pawn moves are diagonal moves, including en passant. Castling is a straight move. Knights are special, they can always move, counting as either a diagonal or straight move. (Alternatively, for a hard variant: Knights cannot move).
Bishops is better than knights if you build up the position correctly
Your videos are awesome. A suggestion please add a timestamp url if you have more than a puzzle.
Youre my favorite youtuber i love you so much
For the final puzzle, what if the rook moves to h5 first instead of checking the king? That would stop it, wouldn't it? It would at least stop the bishop sacrifice and result in losing the bishop without the g pawn getting to move since it would be a check. I checked this on an analysis board, and it is not a mate. The time stamp is 7:22.

Sorry Nelson, but Puzzle 1 is a draw. The best option for black is not to play Ra7 (we know it leads to checkmate), black play Rb7. Black can play this in the first move after Na6 or in the second move after Ng6. 1. Na6 Re7 (1... Rb7 2. Ne6 Ka7 3. Naxc5 Re7 4. Bf7 Rxg8 5. Bxg8) 2. Ng6 Rb7 3. Nxc5 Rbb8 4. Ne6 Ka7 5. Rg7+ Rb7 6. I think it would be a good idea to make a video about a bot such as Martin or anyone you choose, where if you take a piece, the piece comes back and u have to capture it 3 times to fully kill that piece, and checkmate u can do it only 1 move and don’t have to checkmate 3 times. You can do it like 1 one time if it is hard or whatever you would like
