    Great demonstration by cutting away the part of the block showing how the balance shaft can be out of time! I’m looking to reseal the leaky head cover on my mk7 gti and I’ve fallen down the rabbit hole regarding timing and whatnot with these ea888 engines. Great videos, thank for the help!

    It's a 7:1 ratio, you do not have to remove the gear to align it properly, just take the chain off and spin that gear set until it's on the timing mark. Great video and love that you cut the block to show the internals 🤘

    It's actually an 7:8 ratio. 21 teeth on one and 24 on the other. Anyway I think it's bad advice for people who don't have experience timing an interference engine to "just take the chain off" and start spinning things. Yes, you can spin the balance shafts. But turn the crank or cams without the chain and you'll have pistons bending valves. Additionally, you have to know where the gear driven (lower) balance shaft needs to be when piston 1 is at TDC.

Normally, I just reuse the guide, but I through away one of them for one of my short blocks. Great info on the timing of the balance shaft, by the way! Thanks!!

    Hey there we are a shop and we are having trouble with this 2013 Audi Q7 premium plus 3.0 gas supercharge. We did a timing job cuz of chain slap. After we put everything back together we still had DTC p0018 camshaft position bank 2 sensor A correlation code. We double checked the timing by turning it over and making sure all the dots lined up correctly and they do. We put a new camshaft phaser bank 2 and code still persists. We checked the wiring on both camshaft sensors and vvt solenoids and all check out good. We ohm out camshaft position sensors and vvt solenoids also. We swapped the camshaft position sensors and the code did not follow the sensor. We swapped vvt solenoids and the code did not follow to the other side. If there is anything you can add to what we've done or something to look for would be amazing. Thank you if you can

    @angel Rodriguez yes , if the balance shaft seized then the motor choked on the valves because the chain drive system is dependent on the balance shaft being able to move freely. You most likely bent valves and now have no compression. New head time!

    Is there a trick to installing the balance shaft on the exhaust side? I’m having a pretty hard time, as when I try it’s crazy snug. When it’s all the way in flush, the gear doesn’t spin, at least not easy. I snapped off the hinge for the bolt off the original, by trying to work it out. Lesson learned, or so I thought… ordered a replacement, and tried to use the bolt to ease it back in, and snapped that one off. So now waiting on the second replacement, and won’t attempt, until I get another game plan. I’ve heard of people saying if you put it in the freezer, it’ll allow for an easier fit. Any truth to that?

    Hey man i think the mechanic that installed new chains made this mistake. If you mess up the time on the balance circuit the motor wont throw codes but it will feel like an electric razor buzzin the pedals and the shifter. My engine vibes at 2100-3500 in a strange buzzing way super high frequency and vibrates change in the cupholders. The only way to restore the engines smoothness is to take that relay sprocket off and start completely over again?

    @lukac3140 Жыл бұрын

    I understand what you’re saying but it’s not correct. The VW repair manual doesn’t mention any of it either. The two balance shafts rotate together so their weights have to be rotating together where you put the weight doesn’t matter. As long as the dot on the inlet balance shaft sits in between the two dots on the sprocket and the copper links are on the dots on both balance shafts, those balance shafts will then be working in perfect harmony with each other. If what you said was correct then everytime you turned the engine off you would have to turn it off so that the weight on the balance shaft is downwards, which makes no sense. Bottom line is: if it’s all in time, it will rotate in perfect harmony with no vibration.
