REPLACING timing chain on a 2.0t tsi volkswagen, audi

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Installing these timing chains on these 2.0t Volkswagen Audi engines can be a bit tedious. There are three chains one for the oil pump another for the water pump, And another one for the two camshaft. It’s best to lock the camshaft before you take a tension off the chain. There are some specialty tools that are necessary to remove the crankshaft pulley and the camshaft bolt. It was nice that the designers of this engine marked the sprockets well, and also color-coded the chain.

    Good vid. Much better than the ones with guys dong the job with the engine on a table/stand. Also, just FYI for anyone, you can rent the tools pretty cheaply for a week or longer from online VW tool rentals. Oh, and from my experience as VW tech and on my own, just replace the water pump while you are in there.

    I actually really trust Humble with his 2.0 timing replacement with the engine he used. After I watched that video, I searched for the manual, looking under the hood of my car many times, and understood how engines more comfortably moves. also, check out my comment up top, instead--too! You may need to see "newest first". Happy fixing!

    @@RyanZa_myt I love the guy, its just that video skipped over quite a bit of important info. I suppose it'd be fair to say the videos had different aims but I feel like his was also positioned as a how-to and it was problematically incomplete. But yeah, love the guy and the effort he puts into the community. Him and DAP are white knights to a platform with such a misinformed and disinterested owner base.

    @@streezyrider121 I agree with what you mean. I think when I first watched it carefully and then a second time I encouraged myself to continue to do more digging. I began watching engine tear-downs and build-ups, also watching Donut Media for small doses of a variety of information. I also got into watching a professional race-mechanic's teardown and build-up of a toyota V6 (1000 Hrspwr?) engine. That was cool. All this searching helped me, for sure! Especially when it comes to missing information, which can happen all the time! : )

    The bridge can be removed regardless of tensioner being in or not. The water pump is powered by the balance shaft, you're supposed to rotate the balance shaft 8 times, by the 8th rotation it should land in it's default resting position, if you fail to time it this way then the engine will have balance issues and will run poorly

  • @tombair8128
    @tombair81284 жыл бұрын

    Correction:The water pump shaft is also a balance shaft and needs to be timed with the idler gear before applying the chain otherwise the engine will not be balanced. There are two dots on the back gear of the idler that must be aligned with the counter rotating balance shaft which has the yellow mark.

    Hi @Tombair8128 Thanks for the excellent video. I have a question for you: when you remove the timing chain, and remove the cam nuts on the top two cam sprockets, are these two sprockets able to rotate freely about 5 degrees? It looks like the sprocket is locked into position by the nut and that it has this restricted play so that you can align it for timing. If you get this, please reply. My girlfriend and I are looking at a costly repair.

    Did you ever figure this out? It’s probably balance shaft on the intake side (see the one in the video at 5:48 with the yellow line/mark) not correctly timed. It actually looks to be timed incorrectly in the video as well. 5:48 in the video the shaft with the yellow line/mark on it needs to be have the tiny dot under the upper yellow mark pointing downwards to meet 2 small dots on the inner balance shaft gear. My car’s intake balance shaft was mistimed. I only found out when I did the major timing chain service myself recently. Only noticed weird vibrations at idle and high rpm.

    I might have a similar issue, the loud whining noise only comes a couple of minutes after the engine reached working temperature. And it's only during idle, reving the engine makes the noise go away (until back at idle). I had one guy take a quick look and according to him, the chain was digging into the plastic guide rails, and that was what was making the noise, not sure if that's true or not.

    CORRECTION - The water pump uses a belt. One chain is for the camshafts, one chain is for the balancer shafts and one chain is for the oil pump.

    Driven by the balance shaft which is driven by the chain and then the belt goes from the balance shaft to the water pump

    If you know how to tighten bolts by hand. There is no need to use a torque wrench. It’s all by feeling.

    @@aldinnukicic3458 no. Not when you are working on an engine. Some bolts require a lot of torque, some just snug. It is not just a feeling. This is why I do all of my mechanical work and not someone at a dealership or shop who thinks they can get away with counting 'ugga dugga's' on an impact gun, or thinking torque specs are about a magical 'feeling'.
