Hi there, Liron here!
Today I want to demonstrate how, very often, the 1st wash doesn't matter one bit.
It can be very complex and detailed... OR... it can be simply throwing paint here and there.
I hope you find it useful!

I really like it when a watercolor artist lays the groundwork and you can't for the life of you tell how it's going to work out and then slowly the picture appears. It's like how when you enjoy being fooled by a magician.

Your 1st wash looks way better than my final result. I called mine ‘Forever Ugly Phase’ .. 🥴

This was VERY helpful for me, especially your note that after a first wash you can do shadows next, then mid-values. I think this will help me not to over paint mid range and limit tendency to put too much detail in too soon. Trusting your❤ when painting is a great motto. I find it helps me to have a balance of impression/expressive style and perhaps larger stroke forms, as I like realism but tend to be tight, high tension if not alternating my approach.

As a beginner, I would not have thought of it this way, usually apples first then shadows , maybe 1000 washes later of every fruit, will make sense to me 😊

Oh wow that’s taken me so long to finally figure out Liron about the first washes. I have been so focused on those being right instead of the layers afterwards. Thanks for sharing this informational video with us. I really appreciate your understanding of watercolor & teaching.

This makes sense. I started a painting of orchids yesterday and was very disappointed, was going to give up on it. But after watching this video I'm going to put in more shadows and negative space in the background, then come back to the orchids.

Hi Liron! I just joined to your followers here on KZread, I was wondering if you have seen "Across the Spider Verse", this movie has a lot of shadows/lightning of bright colors and I have wanted to do a watercolor of any of these characters from the movie, but I'm afraid to make the big mistake of overusing the paint or something. Can you please look some of the characters and do an explanation on how to do a correct use of shadow/lightnings in bright colors with watercolor? Thank you so much!

I had noted as a beginner ( like me ..though 5 years yo yo with watercolour)...we like tight realistic art..then as you see and observe more we tend start to understand more impressionistic style. Why is it so?

  • @LironYan

I think it’s very personal (: Some may find themselves on a completely opposite trajectory 😂 Though - it may depend on what medium you’re coming from. Another possible reason is the flowing nature of watercolor. Perhaps what people crave isn’t necessary loose painting or impressionistic technique. But rather a process rooted in freedom, regardless of the desired result

Gradually im understanding what exactly the fun of loose watercolour... impressionistic style. I noticed you always paint even the brightest colours little desaturated. Maybe you want " value" to take the credit not " colours".😅
