    The Album is always the one I recommend for someone who is discovering ABBA because it is a key album with which they experimented in a lot of different styles, it's basically like travelling to a different place and time with each song. It's funny how everyone is different, because to me "move On" is somehow evocating south america, anywhere in the Andes really, but absolutely not swedish folk ;)

    I always look forward to someone reacting to this, it's my favourite album. For me, it has the best sound quality, each track is on it's own, yet the whole album fits together well. As you say, it has the unexpected, and watching you reacting to that is a joy. This album shows the side and sounds of ABBA many are unaware of. 'The Visitors' may well give you the same reaction. The last three songs, beginning with Thankyou for the Music, were a “mini-musical” from their 1977 concert tour called “the girl with the golden hair”. Synopsis: small town girl with a gift for singing gets her big chance to move to the Big City and become a star…. But it all goes bad and she feels exploited and exhausted. I would have loved a fourth song, where she finds a happy ending! But it’s Scando-noir, so that never happens! 😳😉

    I enjoyed how you complimented ABBA (mainly Björn) for his grasp of the English language - which is not easy to do in verse. ABBA sure had some pretty cheesy lyrics in their early days, but they also ended up writing some of the most mature pop songs ever penned in English (or any language). And then you played one of the best ever examples… One Man, One Woman!

ABBA was by no means the worst, but they did have a few clunkers…. Like Tropical Loveland: Ooh, it's a tropical loveland Ooh, I wanna share it with you Life can be funny, happy and sunny Ooh, in my tropical loveland! … and … Honey, honey (a guilty pleasure of mine): Honey honey, how you thrill me, a-ha, honey honey Honey honey, nearly kill me, a-ha, honey honey I'd heard about you before I wanted to know some more And now I know what they mean, you're a love machine Oh, you make me dizzy!

    I love it when somebody, like yourself Blizzardz, gets the whole picture of ABBA. I don't know exactly what attracted me to their music when I was a teenager, but as I recall I found them to be somewhat theatrical, fun, and unique from everything else of the day. They stood out. Your video reactions, like this one, listening to the whole album, is where it is at. To fully understand this band you would have to listen to their whole album to get a full appreciation of what they are all about. For me, it was the songs not played on the radio that always stood out as my favorites. Keep up the awesome work you are doing here. I can't wait to see what you think of Super Trouper and my all time favorite album of theirs, The Visitors. This band blew my mind every new release. Cheers.

    As a Swede, it's very flattering to hear you compliment ABBA's grasp of the English language. Yes, I feel flattered by that, even though you were complimenting them and not me. The reason for this is that you, as a native speaker, has confirmed that our school system works. A huge emphasis is put on teaching Swedish kids to perfect their English as much as possible, not to mention that we all grow up with arguably more British programs on TV (and a few Irish ones as well) than local ones. So when you put it all together, we're constantly surrounded by English, and I suppose it must be rubbing off. As for ABBA's lyrics, it's very common for foreign artists to pay extra attention to their pronunciation. When you're singing in a different language than your own, you're very aware of that fact, and you don't want to sound foolish. So you make the extra effort to sound as convincing as you possibly can. And in ABBA's case, they ended up with lyrics that, as you say, are more "correct" than that of many rap artists. Anyway, thanks for the compliment. I'll steal it! 😁

  • @blizzardz9797

    @blizzardz9797

    Yeah no worries Space Cat 😂 I was speaking truly though, it is just incredible that they can write English so beautifully. You must have a way better school system over there so then over here haha. Yeah that makes a lot of sense actually, being taught proper English in schools by educated teachers and then with the help of English tv programs really goes to show how dedicated Sweden are to bring English into their everyday life. Speaking another language fluently apart from your native language is a real gift to have. Once again I appreciate you watching the video Space Cat and I hope to see you in the next one! :)

    @space Cat I would say the very few times ABBA misspronounce a word in English is even more endearing. The 'Champaigne' in 'Happy New Year' is a great example. They even do it on 'Voyage' with 'Thyme' on 'Bumblebee'.

  • @SpaceCattttt

    @SpaceCattttt

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@123billydog It might be easier for a non-Swede to appreciate those mistakes. It's funny that you should mention "Champaigne" because I've always winced whenever I've heard Agnetha sing that. My English teacher would never have accepted that, and I think it's because it was hammered into my head to always do my utmost to speak like THE QUEEN HERSELF that my instincts tell me that even small mistakes shouldn't be ignored. Agnetha sang that word the way us Swedes pronounce it, so I suppose she assumed that everyone else does as well. Damn good song, though!

They matured in songwriting and left the 3 Min. pop song formula. Eagle Is just epic… Take A Chance the catchy pop song of them all… and so on.. the complex structure of The name of the game… the Bassline the trumpets… the haunting of I’m a marionette, the signature thank you for the music..

    This is my favorite album by ABBA, it has taken me a long time to decide but I'm sure of it now. It's I think their most unique album with the most variety of songs. The Name Of The Game is my favorite, it's such a complex song in its production with so many layers and so many different sections and it blows my mind. I also love Eagle because it's so psychedelic and just makes me feel like I'm high. Move On is also amazing, it just makes me so happy. Then I'm A Marionette, it's so dramatic and gives me goosebumps and might be one of their most underrated songs! This album is such a masterpiece, it deserves so much more love than it gets.

    Blizzards, mate, if you’re keen to explore ABBA’s discography - and their older hits - a little more…. This is the way you should do it (and I think you and I your fans might enjoy this approach): ABBA made 8 studio albums… and a bunch of compilation ‘greatest hits’ albums, single releases, video releases, etc You’ve started with No. 4: Arrival, then No. 5: ABBA: The Album, No. 6 Voulez-vous, No. 7: Super Trouper and 8: The Visitors. Most fans and critics agree that Arrival, The Album and Visitors are by far ABBA’s best albums. So you’ve started where most of the ‘gold’ is found. Some of their early hit singles among their best. Many people think ‘SOS’ is still the best pop song ever written. Their first three albums are worth a listen, but they’re not as amazing as the later albums. However, you can see where their sound came from, and developed in the early 70s. Benny was a bona fide rockstar in the 60s, and the others all had established serious careers in dance bands, and released their own albums before they formed a group together in 1971. But, before you listen and react to the early albums (that is, if you plan even to do so,) there is something that ABBA was very famous for, in their earlier career, which helped make them famous around the world. ABBA was one of the first bands (along with Queen) to pioneer the music video clip. Most of the famous early video clips were directed and filmed by famous Swedish film director Lasse Hälström. Their totally amazing ‘out-there’ glam rock costumes were especially designed for their film clips, and they developed some ‘signature’ moves for the camera (which might explain why ABBA fans often seem to be singing into each others’ ears). PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE… take some time out to react to some of the great music video clips of ABBA singles. This is how they became famous outside Sweden - especially in Australia. Ring, Ring I do, I do I do, I do, I do Waterloo (Eurovision song contest winner 1974) Mamma Mia (the clip that had the whole world singing) SOS (maybe their best ever single) … and, of course, singles you already know… Money, Money, Money Knowing Me, Knowing You (probably their best known and loved clip) Fernando That’s Me When I Kissed the Teacher Take a Chance on Me The Name of the Game Eagle Move on Chiquitita One of Us The Winner Takes it All The Day Before You Came (ABBA’s last single… until this year) … there were also a few cool video clips shot in ‘live’ performance: Honey Honey Hasta Mañana Dancing Queen Voulez-vous (and most of the Voulez-vous album) Some of the singles from Super Trouper and Visitors had some interesting video clips, too. … and some of their live performances - especially those shown in the ABBA: The Movie (shot on tour in Australia 1977) - like ‘Why Did it have to be me’ (live in Adelaide) -show exactly why the world was in love with them.

    Glad to see you again, B! Looking forward to checking out this ABBA album with you. 1). Eagle - Yes, fantastic instrumental. 2). Take a Chance on Me - Enjoy your singing along at the start! You move so well to the rhythm of the song, too. I bet you can really dance! Perceptive comment on how they wrote the songs in English without gaps. 3). One Man, One Woman - Yes, lovely songwriting. Working hard to stay together. Nice. What in the world is that noise outside? 😂🤣. 4). The Name of the Game - Love that look of wonder on your face as the chorus kicked in! I really enjoy watching you discover the beauty of the music … those moments when your face just lights up! 5). Move On - Yes, this song was different from the rest, I thought so, too. 6). Hole in Your Soul - Wow, this one really seems to rock at the outset, before the break in the song, with the strings. Scared you! Haha. This song has a lot of tempo changes. It builds to a frenetic ending. “Jebronies”???? 😂🤣. I thought it was a “banger,” too! Great reaction to this song, B! 7). Thank You For The Music - This song starts out like a show tune, in my opinion, like a song you would hear in a Broadway play. Loved the almost bashful look on your face (like you blushed) when you said, “Yeah, yeah, you can sing!” Priceless! 8). I Wonder (Departure) - Nice ballad, a “mellow track” as you describe it, sung from the heart. Good description. 9). I’m a Marionette - “James Bond vibe” at the beginning! Nice! I thought so, too! The instruments behind the chorus do sound like an action movie. Definitely, the song sounds different. In summary, good record and another great reaction! (I really liked Hole in My Soul, too)! Great job, B! I’ll see you in the next one. Peace out…..

    Hello again! The long-awaited revision of "ABBA The Album" has finally arrived I had a lot of expectations Because just as the previous album "Arrival" is a monument to pop, this one is much more versatile in rhythms and when they start to write with more understanding and depth (because the composers already know the English language more) And my expectation was not disappointed I like your reviews and analysis And it really is so, for me this is the best ABBA album, because all the songs are very different from each other but very equal in quality These is the Masterpiece of versatility music of all ABBA albums That's why it's hard for me to make a podium (as happened to you, that chose five) I would choose: Take a chance on me Thank you for the music The name of the game and I add Eagle and Move on the most exotics songs from these álbum but I make a reservation: live the best song is "Hole in your soul" ABBA's performance at London's Wembley Arena 1979 closing the Concert is from another galaxy, ABBA has nothing to envy the colossi groups or singers of rock My favorite moment is the mythical melodic bridge of "Hole in your soul", with the two girls singing like angels in heaven And the song that I like the least (accepting that they are all very good) would be: "I wonder " And a special comment with the context These album was recording after the amazing ABBA tour in Australia and next with the blonde singer Agnetha in pregnacy of their second child She recording the song "Thank you for the music" in a forced position I would like you to continue with the ABBA albums the chronological would say go to "Voulez Vous" (ABBA's disco style) But I suggest you go back and take the third album, simply called "ABBA" (1975), the most underrated of all ABBA albums, there you will find the base of the two albums that you have listened until now, for me the three albums are in The Podium of ABBA albums I am pleased that you have done this analysis and want to continue I hope to continue watching your ABBA GOD bless and protect you always A cordial greeting from my city and country Buenos Aires (Argentina)

    I don't know how the Album tracks are listed on Spotify, but if you had a physical copy, it's clearly stated on the back that the last 3 songs are "3 scenes from a mini-musical" called "The Girl With the Golden Hair" - an unfinished project at the time, that actually made more sense when performed on stage. A fourth cut from said mini-musical, Get On the Carousel (my personal favourite) was an energetic number that "would have injected some sorely needed life" into the Album, as one contemporary review noted. ABBA The Movie, where most of the songs on the Album can be heard, including the missing 4th scene, was already out at the time - you need to see it, if you haven't already, if only for the psychedelic segment where ABBA perform Eagle in an elevator . Once again, thank you for this video, always refreshing to see a younger generation discovering ABBA!

    It's very interesting to see a primary reaction to something I've experienced more than 45 years ago. Eagle by the way broke the American chart and for the first time they were entered the 1 place. The first part of the Album is perfect and my beloved song is "Name of the game" which is melodically is written brilliantly. Take a chance on me was a huge hit. But "Thank you for the music" gain its appreciation through the years. See it through your eyes brought me back to my youth and my enthusiasm at that time.

    @@blizzardz9797 Super Trouper is very, very personal. You’ll be tempted to read too much into it, but that’s ok. Everybody does. Just keep the handkerchief handy. You can’t go into Visitors blind. There’s a few things you need to know about how the world was when Visitors was made and released. The previous three albums are all about disco dancing, personal identity and relationships. Visitors is very very different. In 1981, the world had changed dramatically. Disco was dead. Reagan was in power in the USA, Thatcher was in power in the UK. Ireland was in a long recession. There were riots, strikes, bombings… huge hair, skinny leather ties, bubble skirts and enormous shoulder pads! The Cold War between the USA and USSR (Russia) was reaching a critical stage - and Sweden was caught right in the middle. There were spy scandals and missile launch scares. (Watch the movie: War Games). Europe was very tense. A few of the songs reflect that scary tension. Princess Diana was just beginning to become a superstar. Prince William had just been born, and Charles and Diana were about to embark on a huge world tour. (Think of The Crown - Season 3. That’s the world of Voulez-Vous, Super Trouper and Visitors). And ABBA was one of the first big pop bands to explore electronica! Prepare to be shocked… in more ways than one! Enjoy!

    There was a shorter version of Eagle, but I think it was done after they split up to include on compilations. It’s on More ABBA Gold, but the edit is very obvious. Take A Chance and Name of the Game we’re the only 2 singles released at the time, and both spent 4 weeks at number 1 in the UK. Can we take a moment to appreciate Name of the Game as included on The Album? Again post ABBA this was given a cut that lopped out all of verse 2 starting with “I have no friends…” Absolutely sacrilegious! Your point about them writing brilliant English lyrics takes on extra meaning here. For ABBA The Movie, Björn was asked to write a song about a visit to a therapist, which is essentially the theme of NOTG. So he’s not only writing excellent English lyrics, but writing to order as well. Phenomenal. Hole In Your Soul was the finale of the 1979 tour, before encores.

    Urs Geiser Thank you, that you react to the albums of ABBA. You do it very good, give me inspirations, to take intention to several music aspects ( uh my school English to formulate). I follow ABBA a week before they won ESC with Waterloo in Swedish language on Swiss TV. I'm not ABBA fan (not a fan any artist), but a great music fan. I follow them all the time, have great respect of their music development, also for their wide music spectrum, what makes it (for me) not easy (20 times 1977 I must listen "Name of the game", then I begun to like it; It's a song, one day I must hear it, others days I skip it; yes ABBA was a challenge, to recognize the good music in any style; an other middle aged reactor said, the bass is stolen by Earth, Wind and Fire; haven't you react to Sepetember???; for me yes possible a few seconds, but not clear; Bjorn said in an interview 1977, inspired generally by R&S; an other reactor said similar - specially the fantastic chanting - as Stevie Wonder =at the early70's "Talking Book+Innervisions!!!+Full...+Songs in the Key: fantastic!!!"; "Jive Talking" of BEE Gees: US no.1 1975; "Should be dancing" same time 1977; the immense success of Saturnight 1978 also later. The Bonus Tracks "Summer Night City" and "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme on "Voulez vous=French for "Do you want" (the long version of "Gimme" is as Bonus on it; many young reactors find only the short video version and are sad, if it's over after 3:30"; Madonna takes parts for "Hung up") are surely inspired US disco of the later 70's (Nile Rogers later, see Chic + David Bowie "Let's dance). With you I want find out, if I have a favour album (in the past I listen only Arrival and Super Trouper without breaks or skips; The Album has so different styles: "open your mind, dont shut these titles down!!!", only then one can discover several masterpieces). If you like "Hole in my Soul", then I recommend you (not a order; young people can decide own, if you have time and the mood) the DVD or a remastered version on internet "Live Wembley 79" "Does your mother know+Hole in your soul - as one title", "Summer Night City" (a reminence at their capital Stockholm in the long Summern Night; I think, that was only the second No. 1 single in their own land; not to believe) + many other titles (sadly Knowing ME not so good here live) or the fantastic, really Live Swedish TV show "DIick Cavett meets ABBA 1981" (every song excellent, also Knowing Me, in front of a little audience with the same excellent musicians, all well-known in Sweden!!!), then you will find a further ABBA side, full energy and power, have contact with their audience + fans (have done this for promotion and because Agnethas fear to fly). Abba were one of the first group with videos ("Take a chance" and "Knowing me" ... also today unique), long before MTV US started, good for us today. Beg your pardon I wrote too much. I have suscribed and think to get a mail (to do my part). All the best for YOU! Find good music to start your day, otherwise to spend a good times!!!

    "Thank you for the music", "I wonder (departure" and "I am a marionette" are the songs of ABBAs mini-musical about a girl, who loved singing and decided to take up on showbusiness, but was eventually disappointed in it. It's like you are having your eyes (ears) opened for the first time! This album is brilliant, with every song very strong. It has great variety. I bought the single of Take a Chance on Me when it came out in 1978, my father going halfers with me for the cost, illustrating the enjoyment that Abba have always had for people of all ages and, since then, to several generations. It's incredible that the people who created this great album have also created the equally good Voyage album 44 years later. Fantastic! 🙂

    It's a wonderful album, which was considered quite experimental at the time it came out. Not least because of the mini-musical consisting of the last three songs, breaking with the classic ABBA pop formular, whatever that was. Great reaction by the way.

She dreams of getting away, going to the big city and making her fortune and fame. But she finds out its not all it seems and every one wants a piece of her. She decides she's not enjoying this and wants out. There was a 4th song called Get off the Carousel which never appered on the album but was done as part of the tour when the mini musical was staged. Both girls dressed identically with blond wigs as though both the same person. There is video footage of Get off the carousel and its a blast

    I don't think there's a bad track on this album. For me 1-5 are exquisite in everyway. Vocally, musically, production and arrangement and it flos beautifully. As much as I like 'Hole In Your Soul' parts of it were lifted from the 4th song of the Mini Musical 'The Girl With the Golden Hair', 'Get On The Carousel' which is only available in ABBA - The Movie, which this record was linked with when they were released. I always thought there was a hint to the USA on this album as ABBA were plugging away in the states to make it.
