Another vote for T.Rex I love Bauhaus but you can't beat a bit of T.Rex they were at the forefront of the British Glam Rock movement in the 70's along with David Bowie, The Sweet, Mud, Chicory Tip, Slade, Suzie Quatro, Roxy Music, Kenny and Gary Glitter (we don't mention him or play his music in the UK anymore due to his "liking" of children)

Thanks for watching Simon!
I like the original T. Rex track but if i had to chose, i'll take the energetic cover by Bauhaus ! Bauhaus also did an astounding version of Brian Eno's "Third Uncle" on their third album The Sky's Gone Out in 1982 (this track was actually recorded by the BBC for the David Jensen show and included on the album because the band liked it).

Bauhaus's original video for their 'Telegram Sam' cover is legendary (and certainly helped the song get chart success in NZ). You guys should react to it sometime to get the full effect.

It's wasn't actually on the In The Flat Field album, it was just added to it by later CD releases. Originally the album had no singles at all on it. Great video! Bauhaus wins for me.

It was an EP titled Dark Entries.
Sorry, Bauhaus were suckin away on that one, sounded like a bad parody. For T-Rex, you must check out "20th Century Boy", this was Marc's hardest rockin piece and with those signature stacked up vocal melodies, def one of their strongest tracks.

T Rex the original and the best. Marc Bolan often copied and imitated but never bettered. That bauhaus singer (if thats what you call him) sounds like he's ready for the nuthouse. Marc Bolan's lyrics didn't make any sense but who cares ? his music was great. He dreamt, drank read music 24 hours a day, that's what pushed him forward and made him the great star he was. He had 14 top 20 hits and 4 number 1 hits because he was so dedicated.

Another great comparison would be T.REX -Cosmic Dancer compared with NICK CAVE-Cosmic Dancer. Though Cosmic Dancer was not a single it has become one of Bolan's best know songs due to several covers and also use in the movie BILLY ELLIOT. Nick Cave's version is from the album ANGEL HEADED HIPSTER a tribute album to T.Rex featuring many artists including Joan Jett, Elton Joh, U2, Sean Lennon and many others which came out last year.

Fun Fact: The album, cover of T Rex The Slider, that iconic portrait of Marc Bolan is credited on the album sleeve to Richard Starkey. Ringo. Yes, that Ringo. A good friend of Bolan's. Love this song. But have to give doff my cap to Bauhaus for their frenetic version. You must check out Bauhaus' video for this. Insane energy. Beautiful.

But the truth is Tony Visconti took the photo after Marc handed him his camera and asked Tony to snap away.To this day Visconti plays war that he didn't get the credit.
I heard Marc live in 1975 and he was always better live. The guitar work was fantastic. Heavier and superior to both his single and the cover. Marc was always better live.

Great suggestions really appreciate it Mike!
Usually originals are better, and of course T-Rex are great, but I much prefer the Bauhaus version. I prefer them as a band generally, so it's not surprising. I wasn't so keen on their cover of Ziggy Stardust - it was fine but too close to the original. But with this, they energised it and gave it that wild darkness, which I love.

Y'know despite knowing the name (and being from that wonderful country that gave the cover a top 20 hit) I don't *think* I've heard either version before...on the battle front I can tell you that I definitely prefer Bowie's Ziggy Stardust to T-Rex's Telegram Sam and Bauhaus's Telegram Sam to Ziggy Stardust...on the actual battle in question it's much tougher...but actually leaning slightly the Bauhaus way.
