Beni, the Shamisen player is incredible. There are videos out there before she joined the band of her rocking out playing youtube covers! She was already a famous champion Shamisen player and traditional Japanese folk singer performer (she had a problem with her throat and had to stop singing.) Story goes that when the Wagakki band formed Beni heard about the band, what it was doing, and who was playing (they are all pretty famous in their own right, the lead singer being literally a champion traditional singer/poetry-reader) she decided she was going to play with the band ... so she walked in on practice and just told them she was going to be playing with them (didn't ask, just told them ... and not a single one of them questioned her command ;-) I f you're looking for more 'ODD' groups to react to here are some suggestions for some amazing bands and performances that you won't see everyday!! KZ Tandingan: Performer supreme: Filipina fireball simply owns the stage: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qX1-pZeHZLCris4.html Dimash: kazackstanian singer, I know of no one who has ever heard him sing that would deny that he is without a doubt the best singer in the world: Here he is on A Chinese singing contest TV show, singing a French song, during what seems to be an alien invasion (his singing): kzread.info/dash/bejne/fHmuk9OAg5O6YbQ.html Fantastic Duo: A Korean singing contest. The show has a smartphone app where some famous singer will record a song to be played on the smartphone app by potential show contestants. The fans sing along with the app which records them doing the 'duo' and uploads the results to the show. They then pick several of the contestants to come on the show to do some 'head-to-head' singing competitions till finally a winner for that night's show is selected and the winner then goes backstage with the famous singer where they have 1 hour to practice a duet, then come back out and perform it. Here's one of the amazing results (remember, this was with 1 hour practice after meeting for the first time.): kzread.info/dash/bejne/dayB2LOkk8e2nJs.html

The instrument you liked is called Shamisen. It is indeed played with a big pick called "bachi". It's a traditional instrument. This band's whole gimmick is that they mix modern instruments with traditional japanese ones. If you want more I recommend checking out Senbonzakura, Yoshiwara Lament and Ignite of theirs. But all of their song are pretty unique and cool in their own ways, im glad you liked them.

"WAGAKKI" means "WA(Japanese)" + "GAKKI(instrument)". Japanese words don't have too much stress but have very little stress. About "WAGAKKI", maybe it's difficult for English speakers, but it's correct to pronounce it almost flat. Not WAgakki, not waGAkki, not wagaKKI, WAGAKKI is correct.

Unlike English, stress-accent has less importance in Japanese language. But the pitch-accent of this word is on 'Ga'. So it would be better to pronounce it low-high-low.

All of their music is beautiful. They started off doing covers of vocaloid songs (Hatsune Miku and the like) and a blend of ‘traditional’ instruments and rock instruments. Their name, Waggaki Band translates literally as ‘traditional instrument’ band. As noted in other comments, Yuko the lead vocalist, is a national champion in shigen and is also a terrific pianist, Beni is a national champion at samishen and the rest are at the top of their respective instruments as well. Check out some of their earliest songs and you’ll realize something; Yuko’s beautiful, classic voice is the calm place is the storm of musical power. Once you realize that, you realize that she is literally the eye of that particular Hurricane. It hits you and pounds you, then lulls you, then it hits again, leaving you forever changed in its passing.

You got it right, except Wagakki has two "k"s, this is an indication that there is a "Sokuon" (a pause or "glottal stop" before a consonent in Japanese). This would result in a slight pause between the "ga" and the "k" giving the "k" a slightly harder sound :)

The name of the band, "Wagakki" actually means "Japanese Instruments". They were founded by the lead singer, Suzuhana Yoko (Suzuhana is the family name). There are usually eight of them, and four play traditional instruments (Shamisen, Koto, Wadaiko (Japanese drums/percussion) and Shakuhachi (the flute thing). To get a really clear take on all the instruments I suggest this: "Tengaku" kzread.info/dash/bejne/g2ahx7mkh9TJXaw.html
