1st PUBLIC Interview with Tim Kirk-MACVSOG VET (FOB1 - FOB3 & CCS) ST IDAHO 1-1 & HF Vet

Lang Vei SPECIAL FORCES CAMP Rescue Force member- He was sent by Helo from FOB3 (Khe Sanh) - HF went up to Khe Sahn for backup during seige. HF was made up of members of Alabama, New Jersey, Idaho and Nungs from from HF. From Tim :Lt Allan (Chips) Fleming, SFC Sam (Robbie) Robison, SP5 Ken Cryans, and I sat at Khe Sahn, Vietnam Combat Base and waited for orders on what some called a suicide mission. The previous night Lang Vei Special Forces camp had been overrun by several thousand North Vietnamese infantry with Tanks. As the morning progressed, it was determined that there were Americans still alive, but without help, they had no chance to survive. Some say we volunteered, but Robbie and me just remember Chips saying grab your shit, we are goin in after them! Our rescue force from MACVSOG numbered somewhere around forty men, including Americans and Chinese Nung mercenaries. The North Vietnamese were expecting a battalion of Marines to come storming down the road. They were totally surprised when forty men dropped out of the sky into the middle of them. We managed to rescue fourteen men that day from almost certain death. Read about the Battle of Lang Vei in "Night of the Silver Stars" by William R. Phillip

My uncle is Sam Robison. I actually got to meet Mr. Kirk when my uncle passed away. He came over to my parent’s house the night before the funeral and had dinner with us. He told the story of how my uncle saved his life. I had no idea my uncle saved him. I miss my uncle so much.

I'm lucky enough to have some great Stanton books. A small paperback called "1st Cav, Anatomy of a Division, Vietnam Order of Battle, Rangers at War, Army uniforms of the War" and the excellent "The Rise and Fall of an American Army." History classes for kids are a joke. I question the youth all the time, they know NOTHING of this or WW2. My favorite history teacher was a Marine Pacific vet and he was tough as nails and had our whole class enthralled in the 80s. NVA choppers and planes in Laos really interest me, I wish we coulda got pictures.

Good interview. Bud, your research and enthusiasm makes your channel shine. 'SOG" (Plaster.) and 'Uncommon Valor' (Moore.) just arrived at my house thanks to you. Unrelated to SOG, I finished 'Matterhorn' last week, which I deem a masterpiece. Interesting that I ordered it thinking I had ordered 'Uncommon Valor'. REMF,. That whole area at that time had a nickname of "The Meat Grinder". In my opinion General Westmoreland didn't have a clue on how to win a war, but he had a chest of medals to show the public that he did.

Rumor is that Westmoreland was not the "bright best bulb in the room"; never went to the War Colleges. He had a large staff of the "best and brightest" to make policy. The "war mangers" were defective. As a Viet Nam vet after many years wondered were some of those policies that made no sense originated.

@@pakers2128Considering the war managers were politicians I'd say that was just as big a problem as Westys way of fighting big battles in 67.

One Question. Been interested in MACVSOG for a few years. From the start it appeared to me that this group was COMPROMISED. Year after year, everyone being destroyed by enemy forces who were on the ground waiting…WAITING FOR THEM. WHY? Why was this allowed to continue?
