1st Gen Mitsubishi Lancer GSR (A73/4G32) - Southern Cross Rally Replica

This Lancer 1600 GSR, though built in1974, is a replica of the Shinozuka-driven Lancer that was entered into the 1976 Southern Cross Rally (finished fifth). The owner of this beautiful tribute car bought it 2004, reprayed the body in that original green, then proceeded to turn the dreamcar of his childhood into Shinozuka's rally car.
Being a genuine GSR, it has the 1.6l SOHC 4G32 engine, which featured, from the factory, twin Stromberg carburettors, higher compression and a 5 speed manual transmission.
Event details: 2020 Showa Retro Car Expo, as annual event held in Osaka.

That lancer is legit …it’s the rarer one with the L taillights…prized and were seldom sold used back in the philippines. Back in the 80s, we had a same period toyot corolla SR with a racing tuned 2t engine, already fast, but we got beaten real bad by this L type lancer…because it was a lot lighter.

HBD! If that kicks off the show, I can't wait for the rest! That said that same thing happens here in the US. I asked a guy to actually close his hood for a shot. It was near the end of the show and he refused. I walked away and was taking shots of a more amenable car owner who recognized me from a previous show and noted I was likely there for a publication. It was enjoyable to see out of the corner of my eye the previous rude owner take notice and scramble to catch my attention but I moved on. I've always been of mind, if your not at a car show to share and be social, keep it in the garage, who needs ya.

Happy Birthday D o'G. Here in the states (midwest) I went to a local car show night with all types of cars. I saw a 92 Toyota Celica convertible. I had several Celica's over the years and introduced myself. We got to talking about our appreciation for cars. He was the original owner and I could tell is was very proud of his car and liked to talk about events in his life with this car. And I have been at other shows were some owners probably should have stayed at home with their sour attitude.

This car had 4 Cibie super Oscar lights on the front, 2 above and 2 below the bumper. It was a works supported car and they shipped a ton of spares to Australia for the event. He had 56 tires/rims. It had a spring sleeved exhaust which meant under high revs the pipe opened up giving more power. I was part of the Mitsubishi Car Owners club back then and we did some sup[port work for the team. It certainly didn't have those fender mirrors on the front as they would have gone in no time.

Daniel, Birthday Greetings. This model was marketed in Australia as a Chrysler Valiant Lancer with a few cosmetic changes. The rear lights were slightly different and across the back panel was a metal gray horizontally fluted plastic panel. I bought one new from a local Chrysler dealership in a very light blue color, might have been called "diamond white"..

The original car would have side draught Aisan carburettors which were fitted OEM to all Japanese performance cars and obviously were a copy of SU's as fitted to this car. I was a friend of John Bryson and Barry Field, both navigators for the Australian Mitsubishi team run by Doug Stewart using Mitsubishi Colts and Bryson's story of an end for end roll out of a culvert at top speed on tarmac was hilarious as was Colin Bond's story of not being able to outrun a Dodge paper truck at Dignam's Creek in the Snowy Mountains Rally.

@@duster8100The SU copies were actually made by Hitachi. There were two varieties. The early units which were visually identical to the HS series. Later versions used a squared off top over the piston. Usually seen on Datsun/Nissans , definitely not Toyotas. I’ve never seen them on a Mitsubishi/ Colts. Later GSRs used a pair of twin downdraft carbs.

Fair enough, Rob. The setting is indeed different. Lol. But, my process for documenting cars, and my desire that no-one be present, and my enjoyment at "spotting" cars, is exactly the same. I do hear what you're saying though, because of something that happened the other week. Some guy was in town from Osaka and he hit me up to do some... car spotting. Some background info: in Japanese they use the term "kusa hero"; "kusa" is grass, "hero" is the English word. You can probably picture a "Kusa hero", i.e. a rusting GT Skyline surrounded by overgrown grass. Well, this guy only wanted to take photos of cars where there was overgrown grass. Not just any old cars, not just old rusty cars, but old/rusty cars in overgrown grass. Anyway, that spun me out.
