1st Flight - Vulcan - BE4 Blue Flame 01-08-24

Very cool to see that clear blue flame power off the pad!! The maiden voyage of Vulcan and BE4 went flawless. Just wish they would do "daylight launches". Thanks for watching!! I personally am kinda rooting for BO. In order for spaceflight tech to progress there needs to be competition, and if SpaceX succeeds with the starship program they will have a huge lead in the spaceflight industry. So I'm a big fan of New Glen as it would give some real competition for starship.

@@timeydoesstuffMy complaint about BO has always been the same: Jeff Bezos truly wants humans to be a space faring race just as Elon Musk does. Jeff wants O'neill Colonies which is a FANTASTIC idea in my opinion. Jeff and BO are running at about 1/10000 of where they need to be to have ***ANY*** impact what-so-ever on getting humans into space. I LIKE the ambition... the execution is not just "lacking" but even the proposals lack effort. I do not expect to live another thousand years for the first O"neill Colony to be built on Jeffs time line.

The clarity, the tracking and the inclusion of the capcom audio stream makes your vids my very favorite. That being said: I have NEVER seen a happier rocket exhaust. So this is the result of a team that DOESN'T expect their rocket to blow up the first few times it flies. It is nice that we here in America now have two competing methodologies at work to build launch vehicles. ULA is the one that prefers to test everything thoroughly BEFORE THEY FLY and fly with the expectation that everything should work. The Second methodology is SpaceX that prefers to build as fast as they can, fly immediately, and learn each time it fails. Of course, that only works if you can build cheaply and quickly. So we will see which one works best. Today, ULA showed the merits of the first plan. Hopefully they will now be able to increase the launch cadence. If they cannot, then I guess, the SpaceX plan of build a lot, fly a lot, and tolerate a few failures may be the best way to build a rocket.

The old waterfall approach has been well proven over the decades. It has also been proven to be very expensive and slow. Vulcan is a good old fashioned rocket with a new fuel type engine. Not too innovative and took 10 years to develop. With 3 different types of engines, it will never be able to compete on price/cost with the Falcon 9 or even Heavy. It will however be a good reliable option for Uncle Sam and his money printer.

@@phil4826The Raptor 2 engine is a redesign of the Raptor 1 turbo machinery. Raptor 3 will be lighter and more powerful than the Raptor 2. So SX is also going the 3 different engine route. The Raptor development program began in ernest in 2012...14 years ago. Both the BE-4 and Raptor engines were developed with private money. Two BE-4s are currently in orbit. Seventy two Raptor engines are currently at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico and six at the bottom of the Caribbean Sea.
