1st Day of Karate as an adult//Nervous about starting Martial Arts?//Aurora Family Martial Arts

Are you worried about feeling out of place, or maybe a little too self-conscious about training in the Martial Arts?
Here are some steps I believe will help take the 1st step about training as an adult!
#TrySomethingNew #DayOne #OneDay #
Why do we do what we do?
Because everyone has the right to be successful and we believe that can only happen when people feel safe, healthy and confident.
How do we help people achieve that?
By helping them set and achieve goals, promoting a healthy lifestyle and teaching them the skills that they can use to defend themselves.
What do we do to teach them those things?
We teach martial arts.

I'm 38, female, VERY out of shape (desk job my whole life), and have some mental health problems so I figured taking up martial arts would be confidence building and good for my mental health as well as physical health, and a way to make new friends. I am admittedly VERY nervous for Monday, but gotta bite that bullet at some point, and just go for it!

It's never too late to do anything, some people decide to study to become a doctor in their late 40s early 50s... Some people finally decide to take ballet classes in their 30s or to start playing an instrument at 40. If you desire to do something and you have a passion for it, why let your age stop you, just start and don't look back, have fun, and then feel proud for doing something you spent your entire life topping over!

I started martial arts in my 40’s, I’m 61 now. I have switched dojos about 3 times. My one suggestion to adults just starting is to ask about the age makeup of the adult class. In many schools it’s completely young teenagers and the class is geared toward them. It’s much more comfortable when there’s other students in their 30’s, 40’s….surprisingly many instructors don’t recognize the need to train differently by ages. There’s a reason NFL teams don’t draft 50 year old quarterbacks.

I'm 22 and a tad overweight but i remember how much I enjoyed my Taekwando classes as a kid (Sadly it's been too long/I've been too young so i don't remember a whole lot). As of late I was finding myself being super bored after work so now I want to start martial arts again. The two things i mentioned in the beginning are really what's been stopping me so far but I picked a school that teaches Karate and I'll call them tomorrow. Wish me luck :)

I have gone to two classes and each of them have literally put me down for the next day. I was doing 30 minutes of intense calisthenics 30 minutes of intense stretching and 15 minutes of free for all learn this form. I think I’m going to go to a different dojo because I come home at 8:30 at night and I am wired and up until four in the morning. Now, let’s get to the next morning I can barely get out of bed. 😂😂 I think starting with an hour class is a lot better but I don’t know so I’m going to try a different dojo on Saturday.

I tried martial arts as a way to get in shape but I found there was way too much idle time to really burn many calories. It was about 50% boring lectures and 20 percent stretches and ballet until we actually got to do something. I found for exercise boxing or martial arts inspired classes at the gym is way more effective (and one learns some martial arts skills as well)

Most importantly, are you comfortable there? Try a class out and see if you're a good fit with the instructor and the other students. After that, is it in your budget? The style and the art don't matter as much as those two things. Finally, is it easy to get to? If it's really far from you, it's less likely that you'll consistently attend and that's really important.

I wanna learn taekwondo so bad, I barely work out or go out, I’ve never gone up to someone and made friends. I was homeschooled since middle school and I’m 18 now, I just lay at home every day. I’m worried if I will be practicing with little kids or adults, what do you wear on your first day? What do the classes consist of? I can’t even make the call myself cause I got rlly bad social anxiety that even phone calls scare me. I wanna know everything before I actually make a fool out of myself or ask stupid questions lol. If you enter the teen and adult classes, do you all train in the same room? Do you go up in front of the class? I used to hate when they called me up in front of the class and cried lol. But for now, I’m more curious of what you wear on the first day, assuming you go in ur normal clothes and change over there right? Or do you pick up the uniform a day before? I know I’ll someday gonna have to get out of my comfort zone. Hoping that going to taekwondo classes will fix or at least push me out there. I wanna get stronger too

As a 20 years old guy turning 21 starting to train Itf taekwondo (outdoor gym), i do also train with the teens below 18, and there are also 3 or 4 people, that are 9 to 11 years old. I'm on day 3 of training, my arms and legs are sore but its worth it. There are multiple things that inspire me to train to become a black belt, 1st the older ones who started training who became a blackbelt, 2nd my enthusiasm on martial arts, 3rd manga/anime called kaiju no 8 where the mc is 32 years old joining the Japan Anti Kaiju Defense Force just to accomplish his dream, not only that. I like to learn more about the philosophy and culture of taekwondo. That's why I pick Itf. Go ahead and achieve the things what you like👍

What a great question. As Michael’s first adult student you bet I was all of the above. Day one I managed 7 push ups, 20 sit ups and seemed like I did 1000000 kicks and punches. Had to go home and sit in my office for an hour to get my breathing and heart rate normal. Then 2 days later DID IT AGAIN. Yikes. Wasn’t easier go figure. But after a month of this brutality I could do 20 push ups and you get where this is going. 4.5 years later Black Belt. As the next decade or 2 went by 4th degree achieved and at 67 years young I still have ridiculous “old man strength and flexibility” The social element became very important with training with people who became friends, younger students who were taught and coached and family involvement. We were a little over the top with daughter 2nd degree, son 3rd degree and spouse 4th degree. Needless to say we have no fear walking in downtown Cabo San Lucas (where we now live) and are always aware of our surroundings/environment. Just do it.
