1999 Town Car fuel tank strap hardware replacement

This video was made to help others who run into the situation after removing the fuel tank on town car, crown Vic and grand Marquis. The issue is you can't get the straps back on because the stud isn't long enough. This is video will help you find the parts you need to get the job done. Not sure what all year models this affects but mine is a 1999 Town Car. Try at your own risk.

    Hey .. thanks I recently bought a 2005 Lincoln town-car. When i went to pick it up the gas attendant filled it with diesel instead of petrol so had to remove the tank and drain and clean it. I live in Africa so the guys working on it were not familiar with lincolns. They had a hard time trying to get the bolts back on until i youtubed and showed them this video. Great help.

    6 years later I still have this Lincoln and no issues using this repair. After the video Dorman started making the fuel tank studs available. Then they disappeared off the shelves in my area.

    Fantastic information. You saved me a ton of aggravation and time. My local Ford dealer had the studs and the nuts. Studs were 4.50 a piece and the nuts were 2.50 a piece. That Dornan flange kit was 1150 at the same store I bought the straps from. Save me tons of driving and effort. Me and my son replace both straps on our fuel tank in an hour or so. Thank you so much for posting this video.

    Did yours have the stud like this one? Seemed like it was too short and couldn't get it to thread? Mines a 1999 Town Car. I would think the rank strap studs didn't change as the Panther platform remained pretty much the same. I posted this video years ago and still haven't had any issues with this fix that I posted

    I tried your double nut reverse the bolt out trick. Absolutely did not work for me. What did work however was with the gas tank out the car (gives more room to work) throwing a vice grip on it and just twist off it loosen easily granted I live in Texas. So it’s not like my car is super rusted out.

    It was a weekend and the dealership was closed. My car was on my buddies lift at his business. The plan was to install the fuel pump in a couple hours and go home. Not one of our local part stores Napa, Advance, Auto zone or O'Reilly had this part. Just a quick fix for someone who finds themselves in a bind like I was in.

    Only by watching 10 other videos about tank straps do you get the "whole picture...well, 90%. The bolts are designed to be single use and snapped off to lessen the chance of fuel tank puncture in a rear end collision. Ford sold a LOT of Crown Victorias as Police Interceptor models. Since Crown Vic's are on patrol likely 24/7, their likelihood of being rear ended goes thru the roof compared to daily drivers. Ford sells the studs as P/N N808978-S439 4X. Also on the package, #5171863. Four pack. You make a good point about installing the studs, since this is NOT intuitive. Oddly enough, Ford sold Crown Vics with an optional fire suppression system on the Police Models, with a manual switch mounted with a red button to the headliner with a plastic covers you could swing down or just mash up with your hand. Given the tanks location, and bad juju from the Pinto issue with placement of a gas tank, makes a whole lot of sense.

    My 2008 Grand Marquis tank straps broke. Got new ones delivered. No bolts. So this is the 20th yt I've viewed to get a clue how to attach them without going to the dealer. I'll let you know how it goes...

    John Russell I cant remember how the side of the straps closer to the tank attach. I think they swiveled. The other side of the straps bolt into the metal clips that are threaded.

    the old tank strap nuts were 9/16th (15mm too small, 16mm slipped)... so, if the nuts are SAE, won't the captured nuts in the frame be SAE too?

  • @mayorhp

    @mayorhp

    If you are referring to the thread of the capture nut on the frame. I am not 100% positive what the threading is. I know we spent awhile making sure the exhaust flange studs I used were the same thread as the tank strap bolts I removed. I could checked these studs several times since the video was made. They have not loosened up at all. Now I would be surprised if I picked up a set of factory tank straps and the thread was different than the dorman. I used m10x1.5

    @@30pvfd glad to hear it's still working out for people. When I did this video years ago there wasn't a part store that could get a hardware kit. Everyone said Ford dealership but it was Sunday and I was a friend's shop using his lift. Wasn't long after I made the video people posted Dorman came out with the part and it was in stock. I figured parts stores were still carrying them.
