1999 Rally of the Lakes

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Despite his lack of experience on the Killarney stages, Ian Greer reigned supreme on the 1999 Rally of the Lakes as his Irish Tarmac Rally Championship campaign began to build momentum. Not discounting Greer's fine performance, the event is probably best remembered for a fantastic comeback drive by Frank Meagher who returned to the sport after a sabbatical.

Best era for Irish rallying by far. The current R5, Rally 2 cars can never replicate the aura and spectacle that these cars and drivers provided

So true, the Cosworths like Meagher, Finlay, Boland and Murphy were the standouts for me over the years.

The best days - late 90s was when we first started spectating. Maybe we are biased.

@@patocallaghan3648 yep we have our own videos from the early 2000 and enjoy seeing it far more than the recent stuff. The days of these marathons are long gone to be replaced by sprints these days.

No bias at all it was the best era of Irish rallying by a mile. 1999 was probably the peak, where the gap between the last of the Group A cars and the 1997/98 WRC Escorts wasn't as pronounced so that talent still played a part. By the time 2000 rolled around the technology arms race had well and truly begun, when we returned in 2002 after foot and mouth, the cars were barely out the gate at Prodrive and onto the Irish stages.
