1999 Mazda Miata OEM Bose Stereo Replacement

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video shows how to remove the OEM installed Bose radio/tape head units, suggested wiring diagrams, and re-installation procedures for an Alpine CDE-SXM145BT radio.
I am NOT a mechanic (or sound system expert), so please consult with an appropriate maintenance and radio manuals if you have any questions. You can "do it yourself" and save.
This process should take about 2-3 hours, including watching this video, if you have the tools and parts ready. Save a morning to do it. Assembling the wire harness took the longest. I have included a wiring diagrams. All three configurations should work, I have tested the first two harnesses. I have to run wires to the doors to bypass the Bose amp, but the last diagram will work. Good Luck

Really love your videos man, very informative and well put together. I just subscribed and I'll be looking for that video about installing an amp!

Also, did you have any trouble with your power antenna? I have read that there may need to be some rewiring to make it only go up when the radio is playing.

Drum Check the "balance" to make sure it's not fully driven to one side. Assuming this is not the issue, are you getting any sound out of either the speaker or tweeter on that side? If one, but not both, you could have a blown speaker.

Hey @tooltimetabor sorry I am really new to cars, and I just pretty much inherited a 1999 Mazda Miata. I am trying to install an after market stereo BOSS Audio BV9986BI Preamp Voltage2 volts. So sum things up I went ahead and removed the old stereo and attached the new one. We got it working after splicing everything and were fiddling with the blue tooth when all of a sudden it pretty much shut off. I tried the old radio and now that one doesn't work as well. I checked the fuses on the bottom right with audio and radio and they are fine still ( I even went out of my way to change them out). So I am unsure at what to look at ( if it could possibly be the wiring....) and now the check engine light is on . I am really hoping it's due to the attenna though because now it wont go back down. Any suggestions ? Thanks

How did you ground it? No ground connection on my wiring harness, I need to ground it to chassis

So you are using the Scoshe device because you are integrating the Bose power amp in your set up? I am looking to somehow bypass the Bose power amp, and install aftermarket stereo head unit, speakers, and power amps without using any of the factory components.

Hey ToolTime. Is the black wire with the female connector (from the Mazda) that was connected to a metal "male" connector on the BOSE radio (top right looking at the back)... is that the ground?

  • @ToolTimeTabor

Yes, the black wire is the ground. As for the power antenna, I did nothing special. If you look at the wiring graphic, you will see that one of the leads in the harness is for the power antenna. I believe that anytime the radio is turned on, the antenna deploys, whether listening to the radio or not. Remember, it needs to "be ready" in case you select an AM/FM station, so it always comes up when the car starts or the radio is turned on (whichever is later) and retracts when the radio turns off or the car is turned off (whichever comes first).

I don't know the exact dimension constraints. The generic terms used to describe it are a one-dinn or two-dinn slot. This car fit a two-dinn radio, hence I needed the radio and an empty storage slot to take up the whole space.

You can tell people that are trusting . Just leave your anti theft tool in the clove box . When you put it radio in FM mode will it raise up the antenna ? If so what wire is the power to the antenna motor ?

Germain Gonzalez The video displays how to install the radio and still keep the amplifier. It is recommended that you bypass the amplifier by running wires directly to the speakers. This was an opinion provided by more than one person as far as getting the best sound quality. I don't know how to physically remove the amplifier. So I left it in and use the existing wiring harness to the door speakers

You can also disconnect the Bose amp connector and use “jumper” wires or get a connector that fits the Bose plug(behind air con controls). This way you’re head unit speaker outputs will go directly to the door speakers via the stock wiring. You can find wiring diagrams if you search “bosectomy” or bose bypass. Running bigger wires to the doors would be best for higher power applications but it’s difficult to run the wires properly through the molex plugs in the doors

Sorry if I missed this in the video, but you ran speaker wire (the green and purple ones I think) from the adapter head unit directly to the speakers?

You can. I did not. I did not want to run the wiring through the door jambs. The tech guy recommended taking the wires directly to the speakers for best sound.

Hey thanks for the video! I just bought an NB miata 2000 with the oem bose system. Unfortunately I have no sound from the passenger-side speakers. Any clue what would cause this?

  • @ToolTimeTabor

I would start with the obvious. Is the "balance" set all the way to the left? Assuming not, is there any sound in the tweeter? If both are dead, it is most likely a bad wire or blown channel on the Bose OEM amp. You may have to remove the passenger door panel and directly access the speakers to see if there is any physical damage. However, given that the tweeter and speaker are physically separate, this is not likely the case. You could run speaker wires directly to the terminals of the speakers to verify they physically work. What a pain!

ToolTimeTabor haha i pulled open the door and to my surprise the speaker was missing and the tweeter unplugged. Just placed an order for a replacement. Mabye if i get sick of the system ill follow your tutorial, thanks again!

Just did this same job with a JVC double din unit. DO NOT use the OEA-4A amp control module. Use the Metra 70-7901 harness instead. No cutting, no sweat, great sound. If you do still have sound problems then one or both of your Bose power amps is bad and needs to be replaced - or eliminated by connecting speaker wires directly to new head unit.

  • @ToolTimeTabor

If no sound, then most likely bad wires or a blown channel on the Bose amplifier

    D. I don't know that I can answer you definitively. According to the Crutchfield guy, Bose amp was external to the radio and in-line to the speakers. They basically advised that I install my new radio, the associated amplifier, and "bypass" the Bose amplifier by running new wires directly to the speaker. In this video, I chose to use my adapter and go back through the Bose amp for now. I did not have time to run wires to the speakers. So, based upon what you have written, I think all you have to do is take the output from your new radio with its harness adapter and connect it directly to the existing harness that goes to the speakers. The amp is inline in that built in harness.
