1999 Lexus LS400 - everything BAD about the car

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I just got this 1999 Lexus LS400 with ~205,000 miles on it, and in this video I show you everything that is wrong with the car.

I had exact same car. Most issues shown here are very common to that model i.e. rust bubbling on the rear wheel arches, aerial not working, front cigarette lighter socket. Another one is the warning light for low level of windscreen washer fluid; the float stops working in the bottle/reservoir. Bonnet struts fail. The whole exhaust is stainless steel, so the only problem should be with leaking gasket joints at the y-piece. The exhaust itself cannot rust. Apart from those niggly problems the car is bomb-proof. A great reliable luxo-barge.

I had one of these for a couple of years. Brilliant machine. The V8 engine is a true delight and very strong. The biggest issue that pull these cars in to the grave is corrosion, especially on the rear end. Rear wheel arches, rear sills, the area underneath the rear bumper and the rear subframe are all prone to rotting. Parts are also getting a bit difficult to come by but Toyota dealers were surprisingly helpful and reasonable.

267k miles on the dash and still going. Over the 4 years of owning it I replaced water pump, alt, fuel filter, power steering pump, bushings, 1 strut, wheel hub and bearings and thts all..small cost for a 22yr old car tht gives me no problems

That’s not bad for a 205k miler to be fair. I borrowed a friends very early 1990 LS when my Rover 825 was in for a service a few years back. I’ve not driven anything like it since. I think it’s time for an LS of my own while V8’s are still socially acceptable to drive lol

You just purchased a car that is driveable with over 200k miles on it..you don't need to do a review. The car has done it's time. Things have a right to be wrong at that point.

Nice vid. We have very similar cars but mines the us spec. Check your center console in the very bottom there should be another power outlet which I prefer to use instead of having the ashtray flipped open

For £1300 it's still a good buy but I fear that the rust on the rear wheel arches will be be tricky to treat. It's rare to see that sort of corrosion on an LS400.... best of British though!

I've just finished fixing the rear wheel arch on the left side! I think it's because my friend drove in a field and didn't clear the mud from the wheel arches.

Us next gen older Lexus buyers have copped it with the cosmetic damage. My 04 LS430 had some clear coat failure on the top facing surfaces of the car that honestly resembled bird poop, I was actually asked by a friend once if it was bird poop. Have since repainted those sections and am very satisfied with the job done. The outer rear windshield chrome trim is peeling/fading pretty badly, not sure how to replace it without taking the windshield out, I think I can wrap it somehow but I am not good with precision. Side of the car has some pretty minor scratches and rock chips it looks like, mild fading on the upper side towards the roof where it's only noticeable in the sun up close. This car honestly looks stunning from a distance but if you went up close you'd see the blemishes. I've kind of given up chasing these blemishes and fixing them, the main one was the clear coat which has since been fixed. The inside of the car is actually pretty top nick. Older gentleman owner so there wasn't much wear on the interior. Steering wheel has mild cracking in the wood, and there's a bit of fading on the side of the steering wheel center. Seats have the usual mild stretch mark looking wearing, drivers seat copped it the most out of them all, but it's honestly not bothering me, at least it's not ripped like I've witnessed before. Center console has no fading which I have seen on other users. Dash is proper clean and I'm surprised it didn't start peeling or bubbling at one stage considering how much sun this car would have been through. Carpets came pretty dirty and smelly. Has since been deep cleaned professionally, OZONE'd aired out and maintained. Very happy with the beige carpets but they are really hard to maintain I'll be quiet honest. Overall the car has a holy vibe about it. My friends adore it which puts a smile on my dial. They always comment on the comfort and how it smells of leather, and also how quiet it is in the cabin (despite having a few little rattles here and there.)

@@lieutenantmikeo5979 all original, cam covers gaskets due to a small weep were replaced @ 900,000 miles and was still super clean and golden in the engine, we think it could do about 5,000,000 miles before it literally wears it self apart

£1,300? You bought a car with one or two very minor snags and you're complaining! You should have paid a more sensible price and got a better one. I own a 1989 model with 355,000 miles on it. I've had it for ten years and it's absolutely pristine. Regular prize-winner and faultless in every way. I paid £3,500 for it and 3 weeks ago I turned down an offer of just over £22,500 from another enthusiast. My daily driver is a 2006 GS300 SE-L and again, It's pristine and very cheap to run. Stop whining, sort the car out and just enjoy it. Nice colour, good wheels; and at the price you paid - you stole it! Maybe see you at the shows - look out for an all black LS400 with a cat sleeping on the dash. (She can't sit on the paintwork - she just slides off.
