The best 5 series ever! A good all rounder..!!! Looks, performance, power, comfort!

This guy makes me livid. Turning the engine off when the car didn't even stop, in the Audi. And starts moving as soon as the engine is started, in the BMW. In turbocharged cars. How did he even get the job ?

So much has changed with dirty D's now filling up the roads in the uk. The old petrols are becoming a rare sight to see. Good news? Those old 540's are hella cheap.

Very negative person

This is a horrendous review. The Audi is a 1.9 TDI 110 (proven by reg check and the noise of the engine) and the BMW is a 525tds (proven by reg check and the noise of the engine). I could tell it wasn’t a 530d from how loud it was.

I think it's weird to brag about "reving it all the way to 4600rpm" in a Diesel, you kinda drive like a lunatic doing so and it's not how those cars are set up, the Audi even less so than the BMW. Generally speaking, the BMW has a better engine, the Audi has a better chassis and interior quality. As for the Audi, you don't need a Quattro for those engines, it's slower, heavier, costs fuel and increases the turning circle... but let's face it, we all want Quattros over FWD. I don't think it has to be mentioned anymore nor would there be many left on the road, but avoid Audi's CVT gearbox unless you can vouch for the previous driver driving very carefully and you intend to do the same (I still wouldn't want it). Also, avoid 2.5 TDI before MY 2003. As for the HP figures, especially for the 180HP 2.5TDI Audi (even more so with Auto+Quattro) they might be misleading to people used to petrol cars or more modern diesels. It wants to be driven around 2000rpm in high gears (Tiptronic shifts around 1800rpm I think), rather than getting high revs - if you try to push it, it'll almost feel like it runs out of breath due to it's torque curve being focused around the 2000rpm range. Generally speaking tough, both cars are around the 20 year mark by now, so how well they were maintained will often play a bigger role than differences between the cars. Both IMO were well build cars and they're great options for people like myself who hate some modern additions like start/stop devices, touchscreens, dynamic powersteering (gets harder at high speeds) and the like. Edit: IMO, the Audi looks way better as a Avant (Estate/Station Wagon).

Thanks for the comment. If I understand you correctly, you would recommend the 2.5 TDI engine in cars build as early as 2002. So the last model year of the a8 d2 should fit that, right?☺️

​@@simonlangner I'm not sure if I'm correctly translating it, but AFAIK there was a general attempt to prevent wear on the camshafts during the 2002 MY of the A6, but the hardened camshafts are noted by Engine Codes (German: Motorkennbuchstabe / MKB) starting with B instead of A. I did look up the engines for A8s and it seems they didn't get the BXX Engines. I think the VW Passats only got them in MY2003 as well.

what's wrong with the chassis of the e39? I had a 1999 1.9tdi A6 Avant. Swapped it for a 2000 E39 520i I agree, the sedan A6 or that era always looked a bit iffy at the rear.

@@antiochiaadtaurum3786 The BMWs are more likely to rust, usually the rear wheel arches, skirts and the trunk (mainly on the Touring/Estate), tough I'm not sure if it was across all model years. Tough, even the BMW isn't exactly a rust bucket unlike the E-Class of that era.

He took the wrong one only bc of the amount of power it got over the a6, and that a6 didnt have only the 2.5 TDI V6 No, it had also the optionale 3.0 TDI V6 with quattro and that one would kicked the bms ass

The 3.0 TDi wasn't availible on the A6 (C5) The A6 which was firstly availible withthe 3.0 TDi was the C6 generation. Learn facts before commenting, please!

The 3.0 wasn't available on the C5, but the 180hp version of the 2.5 TDI has pretty good performance, close to the 530d.

Petrolhead Maybe not in youre country at the time but in mine it was so shut up and dont think you know evry engine it had in every country at that time caus you didnt haha. I mean Think, use your brain,If the bmw had a optionale 3L engine with the e39 generation ofc audi got one to, maybe it didnt came until the facelift generation i admit i dont remember that just now but it surly got one engine to match up to with the e39 lol. And besides i think specially the e39 version of bmw is lovely and look so sporty and good and all but audi kicked its ass in evrrything else such as sportines,comfort,lovely leather seats and sporty looking sline steering wheel and great v6 engine sound but last but not least safety features and the best quality for rust, channels and jacking points, engine and everything under car and in engine room. I rest my case

Oh yeah how could i forget?! Haha the 2.7 bi fucking turbo engine with 230hp and 305nm with quattro is the right engine to match up with the e39, would love to see that

A very poor review.

Well the BMW isn't better then the Audi. Evidence is the fact that M539 Restorations never seems to get one of those diesels. He loves BMWs and doesn't go for them.

ONLY audi
