I own one, but have stock headlights. How much trouble was it to change out for the ones on your car? Also, I attempted to put the hardtop up for the winter and the button fell down into the counsel. How to I open the counsel to retrieve it?

+Joe S. Ibanez car is running strong. Just got new BFG all seasons for it also. The car has a new transmission, so it's a little funny when it shifts sometimes. But it has been getting better as I continue driving.

Well, yeah, i am thinking on a year 2001 or 2002 SLK 230 AMG sport package. Maybe between 90.000 and 120.000 miles. That's what usually is on the market right now... and the average price for them is around $4500 - $6000.

Nice review! You did not mention any mechanical issues, which are the reason I strongly recommend against buying this model. The r170 is notorious for electrical problems, pealing interior paint and check engine lights.

I never had any electrical problems the whole time I drove the car. The inside had just been repainted when I got the car. I never saw any actually peeling off, but it was bad about slowly rubbing off and exposing the black plastic underneath in the areas that you touch and rest your arms a lot. My check engine light stayed on from the day I got it. It was a sensor that wasn't worth replacing. I never had any other codes come up though. I would check it occasionally to make sure nothing new had popped up. But overall for a 1998 car, I don't feel like a had a ton of mechanical issues.

Had the wiring harness replaced twice on mine. Love the car but it is possessed. The day driving and the door locks started going up and down on their own was disturbing. But always starts, handles beautifully and looks great.

Nonsense. The SLK R170's problems (which is certainly has some) are rust, rust and more rust. It was a terrible batch of steel that MB used when building these cars. Unless you live in the desert, these will rust and that's what condemns them. The 230K engine is widely regarded as completely bulletproof. The only "electrical faults" that occurs on some of these are premature failure of ABS sensors, which gives the "BAS/ESP" warning light. When it happens it just one of the four ABS sensors on the wheels. You find out which one, the sensor is $50 and takes about 45 mins to change yourself, behind the wheel hub. You are absolutely right about the peeling interior paint - they are terrible for it, however the actual German interior rubberized paint used in the interior can be bought from eBay for $15 and you apply it with a sponge - looks absolutely as good as new after 10 mins sponging it on, and an hour to dry.

​ @droge4348 No rust problems for me (R170 2002). I live in France, and my car always stays in the garage when I'm not using it. A few weeks ago, I saw the "BAS/ESP" warning light for the first time. The night before, I had my car washed, so I think it may have been due to humidity. It appeared a second time later, but now it's gone. I love my car, and the "small" trunk is not an issue and without the roof, we can even fit really long things inside :) It's my daily since more than 10 years. If I change it, it's to buy an Matia ND or an SLK R172. I love the concept of convertibles. It's so cool!

You need rear fog lights because in dense fog the driver in the vehicle behind you may not see your normal rear lights till its too late and crash into yoiu... So extra bright rear fogs are for safety from behind.

Pretty simply, it has decent power when you compare it to any other car. However, when you consider that it only has a 4-cyl under the hood, I'd say it is pretty impressive. As far as driving it, I love driving this car. It is insanely fun. It is a really fun car to drive with the top down as well, especially on a curvy road where you can fly around the curves. All in all, I'd absolutely recommend this car to anyone. Hope this helped you.

When you take it for a ride with windows closed, what is the raddling sound / vibrations that we hear? Is it the roof's mechanism? Or the windows? Thnx

It was a plastic piece by the back window that was loose and rubbing. I found it later and got it put back where it was supposed to go, and that noise went away.

I honestly don't know how much they paid for the car, I just know it was over 10k and I assume it was under 15k. I got it as a birthday/graduation present so I don't know the exact amount. This one had 62k miles on it when I got it so it would be very comparable, but it was purchased from a family member, not a dealer. Because of that, the price could vary a bit as well. It is a great car, and I would definitely recommend it. And thanks glad you enjoyed it.

Alex Zhilcov I think you're talking about the slight noise that the top makes when it's closed. When you're talking to someone else in the car or the radio is just barely on, you don't notice those creaks. The camera really picked them up because of where I had it sitting (close to the back window where the sounds come from.)

Dude, that engine does not sound healthy at all. ive got 140k on mine and and i drive it hard and no knocking sound.

Your motor sounds like it's making a lot of noise like it has a bad tick or knock to it. Is that a normal sound for these engines ?

I just got one like this. Mine has only 29000 miles, and paid less than $10000 for it. You did't show how it fast accelerates, that is what so amazing about this car!!!

And the parts are very cheap, because they share a lot with other more common mercedes that are in the scrapyard already... Everytime I needed parts because of accidents, very few fails, always got my fixes very cheap compared to other brands. Even if you buy them new from Mercedes, that's what happens in Portugal at least. I own the car for 8 years, and I can sell it for more money than what I bought. It has 190000 miles,300000 km, and I'm not worried at all. This engine is very torquy and low rev thanks to the supercharger..
