Mercedes really peaked in the 90s! Their flagship cars were built without a limited budget and it clearly shows. $140k in 1996 is equivalent to $229,137.59 in todays money.

In 1998 the US sticker price for the SL600 was $125,000 plus gas guzzler and destination charges. Only three options were available: The Sport Package with AMG wheels and sculpted rocker panels, the Panorama glass roof, and adjustable lumbar seats. This car does not seem to have any of those options, which is not unusual. (If it had the glass hardtop I think it would have been mentioned.)

I have a 1998 SL600 and people assume it's a maintenance nightmare because of the V12. The truth is that almost everything BUT the engine on an R129 SL600 will act up. And all these fails occur on the lesser models as well. The top hydraulics are guaranteed to fail on every R129, the suspension and air conditioning can break down. Even the sun visors will fall apart. But I've never heard of an engine fail with the M120 V12 in a R129 SL600. They use somewhat more fuel, but not unless really driven hard. And an oil change costs about twice as much as on a V8. But who cares? The V12 is in a different world in terms of how it makes a driver FEEL when he's behind the wheel. People who don't appreciate this should drive a Toyota Camry.

I think when people say it's a maintenance nightmare it isn't because it's unreliable, it's just naturally more expensive because it's a V12, and there's not much room to work on it, so it's more difficult.

HighOctane No, the first Zondas, the C12, had exactly the same unit as the Mercedes V12's, down to the same 6.0L displacement and 389-hp rating. Only after, with the C12 S 7.3, they started using the 7.3L block. Before that, there was the C12 S, which had the 7.0L version of the V12, also featured in the S/CL/SL70 AMG models. Very rare these are, too.

Not all of them, though certainly there were many problems. Mercedes plunged headfirst into advanced automotive electronics, with bad results in many cases. The Chrysler purchase/merger certainly did not help either. Comfort and fuel economy, not solidity, seem to be the biggest priorities at Mercedes today. This seems to be the case with most car manufacturers these days.
