1998-2002 Honda Accord Weak Heater; Broken Heater Control Valve

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

hey guys,
It was time to do some maintenance on my 2002 Honda Accord EX 4-cyl. I also noticed that my heater wasn't working. Considering I live in New England, heat is a very appreciated luxury.
I decided to flush my engine coolant system. In the process I also replaced my engine thermostat.
I adjusted my interior temperature control knob from cool to hot and saw that the heater control valve arm and cable were moving normally. I felt the hoses going into my heater core and noticed the bottom (input to heater core and heater control valve) hose was hot and the top (output from heater core) hose was cold. I immediate feared the worst...I was going to need a new heater core. : (
I removed the heater control valve and noticed some play in the arm that controls the valve. Upon further inspection, I saw that the plastic part of the valve had deteriorated and needed to be replaced.
Of all the places I looked online, I didn't see another case of this, so I decided to post on youtube for others to benefit.
Hope this helps! Check out my other video for a more detailed analysis of the heater control valve.

Dude, I saw this video and your other one, took a look at my heater valve, and I see the screw is not moving! I think I've found my problem! Thanks so much for posting this.

@fibulator Glad its working for you. Once the hoses get old, they dry out and get a little brittle. You may try wrapping an old towel or washcloth around the hose and twisting the hose with a big adjustable pliers. Or if you are replacing the host, you could carefully cut the hose off with a utility knife hook and install the new one. Best of luck!

For my situation, the new heater control valve came with the valve, arm, and the screw attaching the two (I re-used the firewall bracket, hose, and hose-clamp). The heater control valve is 'keyed' with a house-shaped protrusion (see my other video). I am unaware whether other applications have the same shape/size 'key' but I would believe its fairly universal. The screw can likely be re-used provided the hole on your new valve is less than or equal to the diameter of your old valve.

@ormand3000 Not a silly question at all. Without seeing it first hand, its tough to make a diagnosis. Perhaps drying the fluid and "dusting" the area with talcum powder would help determine the source of the leak. It is likely the interface between the hoses and the radiator; if any material was left on the radiator fitting, or if there were some imperfections on the radiator fitting, it may provide a leak path. I would think about getting new radiator hose clips and seeing if that helps.

I think the heater control valve was about $35. Keep in mind, you will need to drain your radiator/heater core, so be sure to pick up some antifreeze! You might as well flush your cooling system at this point too, hopefully its warm where you live. Good Luck!

@therealMarcushall There could be two things happening. First, the servo that moves the push-rod (that's connected to the valve arm and moves the arm) may be failed in one direction. Second, the push-rod could be broken. Consequently, when the push-rod is pushed, the two broken halves line up and the arm is pushed. However, when the push-rod is pulled, the valve stays in the last 'pushed' position. This is an interesting case, let us know how it works out!

Thanks man, you wouldnt believe how much this helps me and boost my confidence. I had a leak and wasnt even sure whats the name of this hose until I came upon this video. Now that I know its name and purpose I'm off to the autoparts store. One question for you. My hose is leaking from the engine side near the distributor, do I need to remove the distributor to replace the hose? It looks a little daunting.

@bigbubbabuford We may need to break it down into smaller parts. Does the fan blow air? Does it respond to hi and low settings? As far as the heat is concerned, try some initial inspections: enough coolant? are the upper radiator hoses getting warm? Engine Thermostat working? have you checked for blockage in the heater core? For the AC, is the compressor kicking on? have you vacuum checked the refrigerant line? Tried adding some R-138 to the system. These answers will guide to solution.

Followed your instructions and located valve. It will move when the temp gauge is turned to cold but won't when it is switched back to hot so is there anything else I need to look at?

I have a silly question. I have 230k mi 2001 Honda Accord 4cyl automatic and I recently had a coolant leak from my radiator. I replaced the radiator and upper/lower hoses. Well since then, my car isn't overheating and runs great but I have a small coolant leak somewhere and I can't find it. Its falling onto the ground directly behind the passenger front tire along the frame rails. Its not the radiator, drain, or hoses...any insight? Thanks for your videos :-)

You are correct. When the heater control valve is stuck open, my heater would have been full-on. My valve was initialy nearly fully closed. However, the action of unscrewing the screw caused the valve to open before there was enough resistance to remove the screw from the valve.

You need to replace the valve cover gasket and spark plug hole seals. The spark plug seals come with the valve cover gasket. Search you tube for the video.
