This was our best team of the era. Too bad the playoff system wasn't in place yet or we would have gotten our shot. We were ranked 3rd at the end of the regular season. Only 2 teams got in the playoff. To this day, I am most devastated by the Michigan State loss, more than any other. This was an awesome team and to lose that game the way we did, with a 24-9 lead in the 3rd quarter, at home, 2 weeks before the Michigan game. To this day, in addition to beating Michigan, I thoroughly enjoy watching us kick the shit out of Michigan State as revenge for that fateful day. I think we should put "Remember '98" on the jerseys every time we play them.

MSU and I love beating the Buckeyes, and I agree that OSU was the best team in the country that year and would have beaten either FSU or Tennessee had they gotten to the Fiesta Bowl

@@jackdoyle3863 Thank you. You got us good that day. Fuckin' John Cooper. That was a great team. Bad coach. But you guys played a great game that day in the 2nd half. Got the momentum. I think one Ohio State player had said "Well in the 3rd quarter they started believing they could beat us and it built from there."

@@tonyiacomi4822 Yep, proud of the way MSU battled back. Wiley's fumble, Peterson's strip of Germaine, and #39's total whiff on TJ Turner on Montgomery's 4th down run were huge plays. Any of those don't happen and the Spartans perhaps leave Columbus with a loss.

  • @tonyiacomi4822

@@jackdoyle3863 For sure. The Montgomery stop was big on 4th down. I remember thinking we might pull it off when Germaine passed to Lumpkin at the MSU 15, and then that pass that just tipped off David Boston's hand in the end zone. I really thought we would score and win it in the last minute. But MSU made some great defensive calls, particularly that blitz on 4th down and Germaine couldn't muscle that pass all the way to Dee Miller with the pressure on him. MSU's defense I felt won the game for them. They outplayed us and were aggressive and physical in that second half. We just weren't moving the ball. In fact, we didn't score any offensive points in the second half at all. Our only touchdown was the pick six by Damon Moore.

@@tonyiacomi4822 Spot on. I was sitting in the North stands, and after we went a quick three and out, Jarrett got off a short punt that Boston returned to midfield. After that Lumpkin catch you mentioned, I remember turning to my buddy and saying, "we're toast." But the fingertip deflection by Cedric Henry calmed everyone down on defense and the rest is history. We had to play a near perfect game on that side of the ball and we did. That OSU team may have been the best in the decade.

"Everyone" 😄 Too bad you don't have access to the Internet, because you could have confirmed how ridiculous that statement is before you posted it. Team rosters for every season are available online, and there's not a huge difference in the Ohio vs non-Ohio numbers. The '98 lists 61 players from Ohio and the 2023 roster shows 52, and several of those on the '23 team who list a non-Ohio origin have Ohio State roots (sons of former players). That '98 team had a ton of players from all over the country and even two from Canada. They had several from CA, including Michael Wiley, Ken-Yon Rambo, and Na'il Diggs. Joe Germaine was from AZ, Johnathon Wells from LA, Joe Montgmery from IL, David Boston from TX, the Bellisari brothers and the punter (Bartholomew) from FL, Reggie Germany from MO, etc etc etc.

The Big Ten should have had three national champs in the 1990s: 1994 PSU, 1997 Michigan, 1998 Ohio State. Insipidity of the voters meant only one got the #1 ranking. Although in fairness, Midwestern voters really stupidly voted for Nebraska in 1994 instead of PSU.

This game is proof positive that Michigan is allowed to commit penalties while OSU always gets called. The actual number of times you see a UX offensive lineman pull down an OSU D lineman by the jersey from behind just before he reaches Brady is in the teens. Not one of them was called a penalty. The Buckeyes would have had 20 sacks on him. OF note as well, the Patriots do the same thing with Brady that Xichigan did. If he started any further behind the line of scrimmage he'd be in punt formation every down.
