They're the latest craze in Japan and they're headed for the UK, but just what is a Tamagotchi? Juliet Hindell reports from Tokyo on the phenomenally popular egg-shaped 'virtual pet'.

    Mine’s is still alive. 25 years old now. Ended up married to a pager from Hull. Two little Nokias of their own now. Never bleeding calls home cept for new batteries.

    Can confirm, I spent an entire summer calling my local toyshop every single day to ask if they had them in stock yet. After about 4 weeks of this, they finally did, and I literally ran all the way there to buy a couple for myself and my sister lol.

    I remember talking my nan into buying one for me and my cousin , £20 each, and that was a lot back then especially for a 6 -8 year old , my cousin dropped his in the sea within an hour of buying it 😂

    The fact they call it a computer game and call the tamagotchis birds reminds me of the news report on the NES were they say that there's only 2 types of games. Things really have changed.

    There was a televised news report in '98/'99 about a young girl who was in tears because her Tamagotchi pet had died. So she buried the device in the back garden. The 14 year old me at the time thought "what an idiot! You know there's a reset button, right?"

    And here I am, in my twenties on Boxing Day 2023, feeding my pet Tamagotchi alien like I did as a child. Oh dear. My brother got me it as a joke gift, but I am enjoying the nostalgia, lol.

    Oh man, I wouldn’t have seen working lunch but I think I saw this exact video clip on a later news segment? Tamagotchis we’re massive though. I was 11, and my friend and I told our parents we were going to ride our bikes after school, but instead ran to the train station and got a train to Croydon to buy tamagotchis we got in so much trouble for staying out late but neither of us cracked. To this day I don’t think my mum knew I had a tamagotchi

    I remember when I got it for christmas in the 90s. I dont remember which year exacly. But I was playing it for a long time. It was really fun. Thanks to my brother Thomas, who bought me. Excuse me, the Santa :P

    I worked at a children's theme park at this time and there was a girl who had one and was obsessed with it. So excited when it took a dump - truly bizarre.

    This brings back so many memories .. Super Nostalgic seen it tbh defo screams Im a 90's Kid.. With this , & Blue peter TMNT Power puff girls.. To nirvana , No Doubt & Alanis M i Loved her Album i still have it.. Titanic , The Beach , Cruel Intentions , Scream ,The Lion King , T2 , Pulp Fiction , Home Alone my Fav Christmas Movie.. That 70's Show , Friends , MTV ,, Me thinking i was the Man smoking Fag's with my Cd Walk man lol , Disco's ,first GF , Drinking cheep cider , Sneaking in at all hours , Im leaving out so much stuff But the 90's were amazing Think i was super lucky to be a 90's Kid

    To complete the fact, a watch (the thing that tells you the time, not a lookout) is pronounced like 'watchi' in Japan. The Tamagotchi is wordplay for 'egg watch' - that's why the early designs had clock numbers on the shell and a 'cracked egg shell' design for the screen.

    @@randomworld4662 No, as a 90s kid, the gameboy was your go-to option for portable video games fun. The tamagochi was a silly girly thing. Even back then it was seen as boring and stupid.

    ​@@the_real_glabnurb That's definetly not true. I had one (plus several knock-offs) and so did a lot of people at my school, boys included. They were a fun fad that a lot of people enjoyed, like Pogs or when yo-yos blew up again for some reason and half the school could do tricks with one. I don't think anybody claimed it was a Game Boy replacement. Tamagotchis came out a year before Pokemon Red/Blue, which was also huge at my school.
