Chris and Bo will always be my favorite commentaries.

Chris & Bo, two class acts. I grew up watching the best. Thank you!

ABC had such a unique quality in it's broadcasting that ESPN, CBS, FOX and others couldn't quite capture. The commentary is the big one here. The duo of Chris Schenkel and Bo Burton Jr. is irreplacable. Another would be the fact that bowling was being shown on a national television channel. The ABC show somehow made bowling like golf. More respectable with a gentlemen's game kind of feel. Bowling has never been the same since this telecast. I miss it!

Schenkel and Bo had a feel for how to make it dramatic that announcers on other networks never seemed to understand. Schenkel knew when to limit his words/not to talk and create the dramatic feel to big shots. Other announcers just treated bowling casually and you never got that same feeling of intensity.

It is really an amazing chemistry. Chris was a top tier announcer but he also had the priveledge of being older and able to sit back and watch the younger generation from a nocompetitive standpoint. Cliff Drysdale in tennis was able to tap into that. As for Bo, he was very knowledgeable about the history of the game, and learned how to set the stage.without being overly technical. Earl, Marshall and Denny Shriner were also quite good.

In the '70s and '80s I used to bowl junior league on Saturday mornings and then when 2 PM came it was time for Pro Bowlers Tour on ABC. Chris and Bo were the Gold Standard of bowling broadcasters.

I've watched so many of these during the last few months stuck inside. I have such fond memories of watching with my father every saturday in the 80's. Chris Schenkel was one of the voices of my childhood.

Sad that this era is over. It hasn't been the same since and it never will be.

I AGREE with you 1,000% because this was when bowling was bowling. The bowling like the NFL is now CRAP too & isn't worth watching anymore either.

A great telecast. I miss Chris and Bo. I spent Saturday mornings of my childhood watching these telecasts. Great memories and great bowlers. Thanks.

Chris Schenkel had the smoothest voice! Always loved hearing him.

I miss watching them on Saturdays. Used to watch just about every week when I was growing up. ESPN coverage is okay, but will never be the same

Those were the good old days on ABC, I wouldn't miss bowling on Saturday afternoon after youth league in the 70's. I didnt remember Tracy looking so good, she was actually beautiful.

If you have ever watched "A League of Ordinary Gentlemen" you can see that Pete and Tracy Weber are made for each other. And that is not in a good way.

At this point, the pba was paying abc to televise its championship. It was time.

Loved it when these two were doin telecasts. All Class!

I know bowling isn't as popular today but I think it would be great if one of the networks would revive this tour on a weekly basis. I think it would lead to a revival in bowling popularity. I remember looking forward to watching it on Saturday afternoons. Chris and Bo were outstanding.

Unfortunately, IMO, I don't see it happening. Bowling has always had this stigma of being a "blue collar" sport and the networks are chasing after the money with NFL, NBA, and MLB coverage

I have so much respect for Chris Shenkel, mostly because I was both a fan of bowling and because I was a journalism student. So I came to have a great appreciation for how difficult a job he had and recognized how beautifully he handled it. He was not only a great supporter of bowling and a professional journalist but he was a great man and that is more important in my book. As the old saying goes, "they just don't make 'em like that anymore".

These are without a doubt some of the BEST bowlers I've ever seen!!! They are simply amazing!!! Just too bad that this great sport doesn't have the kind of popularity it once had. I can remember back in the day watching Earl Anthony on ABC's Wide World Of Sports & so many others for that matter. Like I said before, these fellers are absolutely amazing!!!

I remembered the first time Bo Burton Jr was not on the telecast, then I see him on the approach getting ready to play, I was just a kid and had no idea he was a working pro.

I love watching Bo bowl. The concentration he had while playing was amazing.

Seen this last telecast the day it aired, & after watching the ABC weekly tournaments since the 70's + going to see several in person in the 80's & 90's the ending of this one definitely made me shed a tear.

Nobody could do bowling on TV like ABC. Not even ESPN.

I grew up watching this series and wanted to become a professional bowler at the time, my bowling idol at the time was (and still is) Brian Voss, the ladies liked watching him bowl on TV, but as Daveyo747 did a good job of putting it, being on Tour is no doubt a lot of work. As he mentioned, it is not a piece of cake at all, as a matter of fact it's too cost-prohibitive, and one with too many restrictions involved in it as to what you can use or even wear, even Danny Wiseman (another of my all-time favorite bowlers along with Brian Voss and Norm Duke) could no longer wear his trademark Dragonfly (or similar) button down biker shirts during tournament proper, although I DO like the new jerseys so many of the PBA players (and some of us PBA wannabes like me) wear from High 5 Gear (www.high5gear.com), and also my Storm replica staff jerseys and I have a collection of PBA League shirts made by High 5 Gear as well. Plus, nowadays (with the exception of when they're in Portland, Maine for the PBA League and the PBA Maine Event) the PBA and its members get jackshit for media coverage, even within the city of which they are competing in that week, and yes, sadly enough, the prize money is not (and has not been) keeping up with inflation, it has gone in the exact reverse, down, as have the Nielsen ratings for the ESPN telecasts, which are not only taped in advance but are also put in the same time slot as the mighty NFL/NBA/NASCAR juggernaut on TV every Sunday. Some of the reasons I gave up my dream to be a PBA member after our home bowling center here in Port Townsend, WA, Key City Lanes, got gutted out in late 1999 and rebuilt into what is now the Port Townsend Food Co-op.

ESPN took over ABC Sports and its now "ESPN on ABC"

There were three spinoffs of Wide World of Sports, The Superstars which was made for TV pro athletes in competition, the American Sportsman which was the first TV outdoors show after they covered a rattlesnake hunt and the Pro Bowlers Tour after they showed a PBA event in 1961 which got great ratings. The tour had the longest run.

I remember I was on vacation and turn into the broadcast and I cried to my mother because part of my childhood was over

thanks for posting. that was sad. Bowling telecasts just haven't been the same since.

Rob, sorry, I misunderstood. Yes, I started watching PBT when I was very young, also.

Exciting final match and I am glad the way the nice guy Walter gutted it out at the end.

Hard to believe that it's been almost 20 years since this show aired; Chris Schenkel would pass away a few years later. He will ALWAYS be the voice of the PBA, just like Pat Summerall was to the NFL, Dan Kelly to the NHL, and Chick Hearn and Marv Albert to the NBA.

Simply the best. ABC coverage.

Chris Schenkel was a living legend. He was a pro doing a lot of different sports. There was nothing like a Saturday watching Chris along with Billy Welu and then Nelson Burton Jr. doing the Pro Bowler's Tour. Then right after watching another living legend Jim McKay on Wide World of Sports. Those lane conditions were insane. WRW getting those clutch strikes in the 10th was amazing considering those lands. Pete Weber upgraded from his first wife back when he was a teenager.

I am from New England and in 1996 we had the cancellation of our candlepin bowling show which had aired since 1958. Then the following year, we had the cancellation of these broadcasts on ABC. Both games have been dying ever since. It's very sad.

I’ve bowled on this pair (37-38) here individually back in 2018 at the Jr High State finals. Now I’m a senior in high school and still bowling here a few times a year.

Those were the days and I remember some of the abc pro bowlers tour shows with chris schenkel and Nelson burton jr. Even when they were in Erie Pa.

Yea guess what, I had the honor to bowl against them, Johnny Petraglia, Don Johnson, and Earl Anthony too, and of course Dick Weber. Man these guys were PROS'S, AND the best bowling had to offer. In any rate it was money well spent to compete against them no doubt about it.

Chris and Bo (and Billy Welu before) were the best.

Telescores were the first hit. Then came governing body approval for virtually anything the BPAA wanted... countertops for lanes, then disposable balls because hard rubber and polyester wouldn't work on the non-wood surfaces, then approving factory loaded balls, gymnastic pins, the list goes on and on. All these score inflating tricks have changed the face of the "professional" bowler from a savvy sportsman to a whining schmuck.

From this moment on the PBA has never been the same

I saw an episode of championship bowling hosted by Chris shankle from 1958. 4 years prior to the PBA. He was smoking a cigarette while announcing.lol... it was great.. he sounded very professional back in the '50s

That color football clip was from the Game of the Century - the 1966 Notre Dame-Michigan State matchup. Joe Azzaro's game-winning field goal attempt just missed to the right. That game was played on my tenth birthday.

I was 8 years old when the pro bowling tour started on ABC. Don Carter was my hero and made me wanted to learn to bowl. I hated when this happened. "But Bo,like the Olympic creed,it's not in winning but, taking part"! Naaaaaaa, it's winning!

This opening left a lot to be desired

Absolutely agree, WRW,Jr. And PDW, the two greatest players in the sport's history to wrap it all up and gave us fans a great match! Through the years, there were men who substituted like Al Micheals, Bud Palmer, and even Keith Jackson that made this show the highest rated sports show of it's time. Nelson Burton Jr, Dick Weber and the late Billy Welu each made this show such a great pleasure to watch. Thank all of you mentioned above for all the great times!

Even though the PBA on FOX Sports with Rob and Randy is great, the old PBA on ABC with Chris and Bo was superior. I do enjoy the more talkative and comedic commentary of R&R nowadays, and even though they are both very good at what they do, C&B just had a special charm that unfortunately nobody will be able to capture. I kinda wish I grew up in the 1980s so I could watch this old PBA style as it happened.

Hey, I have a request, because you put the whole telecast of the 1993 wichita open and this one, would it be possible if you could put up the full telecast of the 1993 AC Delco Classic? Even though I put it up, a lot of the matches have a majority of the parts cut out so you don't get to view every shot, but if you were to post that, I'd appreciate it very much.

I think you might be talking about Patrick Allen. He often talks to himself in the 3rd person as well as to his ball..

I just came across this video, and I remember this broadcast well. Chris and Bo were one of the reasons (my dad the main one) I got into bowling. They were the motivation to try to get to the big leagues of bowling. Things happen in life, priorities change and you sometimes never get the chance to reach that goal of your childhood. But Chris and Bo will ALWAYS remain the King and the Prime Minister of professional bowling. RIP, Chris. And btw, I also remember this broadcast as being one of the most frustrating I'd seen...the oil/pattern was tough, yes. But to see these guys miss targets like that was amazing. So many cross overs. Anyway, I miss these days.

Another problem was that Disney didn't want bowling interfering with their then-new One Saturday Morning block- primarily because they tended to push Bugs Bunny and Tweety to noon (they had to run out the contract) and bowling would prevent that.

That depended on the area where you lived. The east coast feed had Bugs and Tweety at 10:30 eastern right after the Disney's One Saturday Morning block. ABC would also constantly preempt Bugs and Tweety when they had college football in the Noon eastern timeslot.

By 1997, the pba was paying abc. The viewership numbers were WAY down, and the demographics of those viewers was undesirable. The only constant is change. Things change. I am grateful for the PBT, and will always cherish the memories.

@@sludge4125 It's similar to what the Alliance of American Football was doing during its short run. The AAF paid its own way to get on CBS, CBS Sports Network, NFL Network, TNT and BR Live.

@@sludge4125 $200,000 a year on a broadcast network? Building on my point about the Alliance of American Football, it's amazing that the league made it to its first game, let alone complete _eight weeks_ of a 10-week regular season, given how poorly run the AAF was behind the scenes.

@@sludge4125 He has a number of burner accounts, each one dumber than the one preceding it. A few years ago, he mentioned that the 2018 SERVPRO First Responder Bowl between Boston College and Boise State, a game that was canceled after a lengthy lightning delay and persistent storms throughout the afternoon, even *after* the game was called, should have been played to completion, along with asking about a reschedule (there _wasn't_ one...) _TWO YEARS AFTER THE GAME HAD BEEN SCHEDULED AND CALLED OFF._ He's *dense.*

So sad. I treated it as if the PBA tour with Chris Schenkel and Nelson Burton Jr. would go on forever. I wish I had taped every single tournament.

They would have retired soon anyway. They were getting up there in age, mostly Schenkel tho. Bo's only in his mid 70's today.

Mr. Smooth Nelson Burton jr.Jr.! If I was to want to copy a style that would be the one. Never off balance perfect form ball after ball after ball incredible bowler!

Love the retro rock 'n roll theme music ABC used on the Pro Bowlers Tour in it's latter years. Chris Schenkel was The Voice Of Bowling, and is sorely missed. I believe that ABC had not lost the rights to the PBA Winter/Spring tour at the time of this telecast; it's possible that had Schenkel not retired, maybe the PBA may have stayed with ABC.

altfactor I don't know, because a couple of years later, ABC Sports became part of the ESPN family of Networks and rebranded it ESPN on ABC. They covered bowling but moved it to Sundays, except for one broadcast of the Tournament of Champions which was on ABC, Nelson Burton Jr. gave us memories of past Tournament of Champions on that broadcast. CBS picked up part of the PBA in 1998 on its Sports Spectacular, including that outdoor PBA New York Experience at Bryant Park which was a bad concept, IMHO.

I believe Schenkel was planning on retiring anyway. I saw in a video with Bo Burton that if the PBT continued on ABC into 1998, there were plans to move Bo into the Schenkel role, and Randy Pedersen would be the analyst.

People back then (and now) used to like to argue that left-handed bowlers didn't have any advantage over right-handers. I cannot for the life of me understand how anyone who is even remotely familiar with the game or is even passably intelligent could argue against something so obvious. This match is a great demonstration of that, as Voss feels that he has to play 5th arrow and is struggling all over the place, meanwhile the other guy is playing just inside second arrow as though it's league night. Give me a small break!

That is a very good way to put it. ESPN wasn't too bad early on, but FS1 is exactly as you put it: a circus and not about a professional sport. I can barely stand to watch it now.

@@pdef1949 Bowling at the upper levels from scratch leagues to pro events was a cerebral sport. Non-bowlers have taken over and are intent on promoting this non-contact sport as if it were a pro wrestling event. Shame that.

@@20alphabet So true. Bowling has gone to a game of finesse to raw power, changing equipment more often that socks, and bowlers of lesser ability winning because of equipment and conditions. And the coverage has deteriorated from a classy dignified act to a sideshow barker and a wise a$$ sidekick. Unruly crowds, loud rock music and popping six packs on the air. Phooey! Watching this up to the final minutes and the tribute made me cry, even as I remember watching it live these many years ago. I watched very nearly right from the start right up until this telecast, even when I was out of the game due to work commitments. Now that I'm back I'd rather watch old videos than the new shows. I've even turned a few of them off right in the middle of a match.

And to think of what an achievement a 300 was back in the 1960s and 170s when it was rare in pro events, nearly unheard of in scratch leagues, and never seen outside of either is now commonplace in handicap leagues. That Glenn Allison's 900 with a conventional plastic ball on wood lanes in a sanctioned league is still denied in favor of Mushtare-like performances with loaded balls against gymnastic pins on "synthetic" lanes is enough to repel anyone who loves bowling. I remember when cheating was punished, but today bowling organisations are the major violators.

The problem was not so much the coverage. It was the proprietors who owned those bowling alleys and they always kept going in the *RED* when they hosted these tournaments, and the cash payouts was quite high. Example they always prayed that no pro will get a 300 game in the televised finals otherwise they have to shell out from their own pocket a cool 100 grand. I have a friend who is a 50% proprietor owner of a 40 lane bowling building, and I did asked him that question why they will not host anymore tournaments and that was his answer on above paragraph. His second reason is that they had a limitation of how many people can come to see the games and he said one would need to have an arena just to make a profit. Anyway PBA got bought out by 2 individuals and called it Storm now and streamlined the winnings etc., cut down on the expenses, gave the proprietors a chance to either break even or make a small profit, and reduced the cash payouts to keep the costs down. Its still the same today as when they first started out. Next thing we know reactive resin balls came out, changing from wood to synthetic lanes, bowlers needing an arsenal of balls just to compete, and today its very very expensive. I used to buy very good bowling balls for around 100 dollars, now you need to spend nearly a grand for just one good reactive resin ball. Its gone insane on the prices. So who is making the big money??? Storm is because you people are falling for their line of bullshit and sales. Get rid of that reactive resin balls and return back to Columbia yellow dot 58 hardness balls and it will do the very same as those damn reactive balls do at only a fraction of the cost no more than 150 dollars per ball. My advice to all bowlers you only need minimum 2 balls and no more than 4 for your arsenal. One Urethane (main spare), one Columbia 300 yellow dot (main striker), one back up medium ball for lane conditions, and one plastic ball for very dry conditions. That is it. So the choice is yours. You do not need all that garbage on your wrists or hands. Just bowl without it and learn. So with this, add a good carry roller for your balls, your shoes, and some equipment and max cost will be no more than 700 dollars fully equipt, vs spending say 7 balls by storm for over 6,150 dollars, plus the ball carriage roller, equipment, and all that other bullshit. Its sad that stupid PBA banned the Columbia 300 yellow dot 58 hardness, and really the bowlers today SHOULD DEMAND TO THE PBA RULES COMMITTEE TO REDUCE THE HARDNESS DOWN TO NO LESS THAN 55, as this would be perfect for synthetic lane conditions which most bowling houses have now. They do have the ability to make Urethane shells down to around 62-65 and you will still get good reaction on synthetic lanes. Anyhoooooooooo, that's PBA for you.

+Daveyo747 On what planet does a bowling ball cost 1000 dollars? The absolute top of the line ball drilled and equipped with fingertip grips and thumb insert is about 220 to 240. A great middle of the line ball like a hyroad is about 160 to 180.

***** Well some pro shops are selling it near a thousand in the range of around 750 to 800. That is close enough. I see it on the video's here on You Tube OK. The price tags are right under the ball that is displayed. I did not set the pricing on those balls. You can see for yourself. I kid you not. So lets say the ball is sold for 700 bucks, add another 150 dollars for drilling and tips and inserts plus any other eye candy you want done on the ball or to use for bowling. Yea I can see that price getting awful close to a grand. Now lets take your side OK. No pun intended. Say you bought a ball, costing like 275 bucks, add 150 (tips, inserts, drilling) to that and its now already 425 bucks. Now add your ball carrier which is around 250 bucks, add your goodies, tape, rosin bags and whatever else you are inclined to buy such as wrist aids etc., and this will go to around another 150 bucks give or take. Now add your shoes to it, plus a couple of bowling shirts with your name on it, this can be another 150 bucks. So now lets add this all up OK >> 425, plus 250, plus 150, plus another 150 and now the price is $975 dollars. To bowl in any PBA tournaments half of what you have as of accessories is not allowed because they now force you to buy their approved bowling shoes, and accessories and have restrictions on your shirts as well. If you already bought the stuff before the rules went into effect you might get grandfathered into that new rule. You have to pay for this, have a valid credit card to pay for your entry fees, plus have to have your balls certified before bowling in any of their tournaments. This is more money. A lot of people have dreams to become a PBA or PWBA player. But many do not realize the cost that is involved before you even get started. Lets assume you start from the beginning. OK $975 dollars right. That is only one ball. Now add another maybe 6 or 7 more balls to that because you will need it due to lane conditions always changing. Wow lets multiply just this Ok 7 times 425 comes to another 3 grand. Whistling here. I am a REGIONAL PRO and have been since the 70's and I know what cost is all about regarding being a professional and what it takes to be a real PRO. What I did for you on this thread was LAID OUT THE CARDS ON THE TABLE, and told you facts. I have not gotten to your transportation costs, and your eating and your hotel stays either, and the rest of your upcoming trips and how brutal such tournament can be that will deflate you almost instantly. When you start in the PBA qualifying you have 16 games to make the 1st CUT (pin fall count). Then you have another 16 games to make the second cut, (pin fall count) Then if you are lucky enough you're in the final 64 bracket. Now its match play plus pin fall count. 24 GAMES HERE just to make it to the semi finals. Then you have 8 games just to make the final 5 spots. The 6th spot is reserved for on call in case a player gets sick or falls ill etc. So you need to bowl 70 games within 3 days just to make it to the winners circle. By this time your hands and fingers is all bruised up and skin torn here and there. Do take notice of all the tape they use on their hands. You see it all the time. Most pros are using 13 or 14 pound balls. Rarely 15 unless you are very strong. Hardly and almost never 16 pounds. Have you not noticed on how they can flip these balls so easily lift it one finger etc. I use 13 and 14. Never 15 or 16. You need sponsors to help finance your dream and quest. Its almost cost prohibited just to be a touring pro unless you got MONEY to spend. That is why I always recommend to stay no higher than a regional pro, and just go to certain tournaments within your traveling range, and or bowl in sports leagues (which is about as close as you can get to bowling in a PBA tournament) and still have a job to have a solid means to bring in your income. A lot of us do pot luck games and we can win a lot of money on a given night if we are lucky to have others willing to challenge us. Most pros average 230-240 in a PBA tournament. Its brutal out there. If you fall behind in two or three games its very difficult to catch up to make the cut. Say you bowl 190 then 210 and then 224, while others are hitting 240, 260 or 250, you are getting buried already. If you cannot push better than 245 for the remaining 13 games time for you to go home. The pressure is tremendous. Example Belmo averages about 120,000 dollars a year, and does advertising for companies etc. which gives him more income, and if he wins some majors on that given year its all the more for him. He has the cash to keep going. Peace.

dude, you are delusional...........there is no ball sold for $750 and not one pro shop charges $150 to drill a ball no matter what grips or thumb insert you use......and you say most pro's are using 13 and 14 pound balls????? you have a few things correct in your ramblings, but most of it is utter nonsense!!! good day!

Yeah this was one of the funniest comments I've ever read. 250 out the door is about the absolute highest you will ever pay for a bowling ball...maybe a hair more with an interchangeable thumb. I was cracking up..$1000 dollars for a bowling ball. There would be no bowling leagues ever at those prices. hahahaha

In a contemporary interview, burton claimed the viewership numbers were still good. They were not. They were down about 75% from the 1970s hey day. the camera angle is so shitty. instead of showin the beautiful motion of the bowler. they jus zoom right into the ball. they barely even show the bowler.

I remember Pete Weber dropping the US Open trophy...so funny yet so embarrassing at the same time. PBT on ABC was part of my Saturday for a long time...I would even watch it when I was getting my hair cut at Hortense's Barber Shop

The best part about Bo was, unlike Randy Big Mouth is Burton made it about the talent without trying to be cute. Randy's bad jokes, and his bias towards the Storm bowlers makes him difficult to watch. And when Belmonte is on the show? Forgot it. Turn the sound down and save your ears from that torture.

To my mind, this show marked the death of the real Professional Bowlers Association. It's been gimmick-laden pale immitation ever since and rarely gets on network TV any longer, has little corporate sponsorship and has struggled for relevance.
