Always a pleasure and a learning experience watching this guy! You are awesome Bernie! 👌🏼
Love every video you put out. Sooooo much incredible knowledge you have to give. Working on getting better at reading and dissecting waveforms. Love it
This was a great video showing the escan, escope & the IEA capabilities including the tail pipe sensor. Nice work
Solid diagnostics with step by step procedures. Thank you for sharing with us!
In this case the injector was not flowing enough, so the PCM recognized a misfire, turned off the injector but the spark was showing a much higher output which is the giveaway. On carburetored engines an ignition scope would would show a lean cylinder usually a spark plug or ign wire, but with a fuel injected engine the extra advantage is the injector pressure drop test which can be done through the scan tool. Thanks Bernie for this video.

The advanced toolology you use is far more advanced than most you tube video mechanics. You are a boss.
Bernie thank you so much for taking the time to teach us all. You have so much knowledge that you just can't find in any type of college or book. Looking forward to the next one. Just one thing though you would think that the missfire would be noticeable more when cold because a clogged injector wouldn't deliver more fuel even if it had more on time.
Wow..great example of effect rather than the cause...thanks for another great video Bernie
Thank you Bernie , you always make my day
Always great learning Bernie, Thanks again for another great one!

When I heard I only believe in data my smile is ear to ear. Love you Bernie
My 1997 S320 had a misfire in cylinder 6 after the engine warmed up. Then the O2 sensor shut down the cylinder. When the engine was cool there was NO misfire. My real-time graph of the firing sequence was almost identical to the one in your video. A spark issue was also present. Removal of the coil revealed a torn boot on that spark plug resulting in rust and corrosion. Installing fuel injectors, spark plugs, and wires took me a few hours. Now the engine runs like new. Thank you
ATS has all the tools! Great lesson Bernie.
It’s very awesome to see Bernie Diag , it’s a blessing God bless You
Thanks legend for the continuous training
i actually never heard of the injector being shutdown after a number of misfires. this is grat info appreciate the work
What a professional man
What a great tip! When the computer sees misses from a bad ign coil it will shut the injector off and the fuel trims will default to zero and will be seen in scanner data stream to know when this is happening so you don’t think the pcm has a bad driver. Very cool.

Just Amazing !!! just amazing !!! I live in a small Town in México, your videos are the reason that I want to learn english ... realy thank you for shering... and sorry for my bad english, I am steell learning ✌️👍✨
Most shops don't do diagnostic past a quick scan. They also use identifix and shoot parts at it. Why? Diagnostic doesn't pay much and shops just want easy gravy work so they can turn 80 hours + a week. This mechanic in the video is a true mechanic.
Some shops get lost, and the CUSTOMER gets screwed. I got called by a auto parts store to troubleshoot a "rough running" Ford. Shop had already installed a rebuilt carburetor, new distributor and REBUILT ENGINE!! Well, some old lady will ended up paying over $3500 for ... an EGR valve 😆 😥. Yup, bad EGR valve was original problem all along. After more than three decades in the biz, I can rattle off stories like this for hours.
Following data but shops don't want engineers working in their shop. I myself consider myself more than a mechanic and I worked as such for almost 2 years and mechanics that I saw did not have 10% the knowledge that I did watching Bernie and utilizing the tools and the methodology that he uses. A lot of mechanics can't even do a relative compression using an amp clamp or the AC voltage technique or the in-cylinder or even the intake pulses and such. I'm amazed that a lot of techs are either scared or too lazy to learn and invest.

Definitely not investing enough into knowledge. Tools (all of them) are use less without knowledge! I keep telling a friend of mine he needs to take time out and update his skills. He doesn’t even have a scope.
Got to give the other garage some credit for not getting carried away/firing the parts canon before get a 2nd opinion.
Excellent, experience makes a difference
Thank you wonderful video you are a great teacher .
Thanks. Definitely helped me learn. Really cool tech also.
Thanks for this one Bernie! I'm working on getting used to using a scope because it can "see" what I can't...

Master at work.
Thanks so much ❤
This is shameful on the techs condemning the engine. I worked for Mercedes years ago and this is common knowledge about the fuel injector strategy. I can't believe someone threw a set of coils at this, still had a misfire and it didn't dawn on them to at least flow check all the injectors. Shameful is all I can say
28:36 Great speech Bernie!
i sure wish i could figure out a way to buy one of those scanner/scope/tablet setup
So after they replaced those coils which are expensive they decided to get a proper diagnosis.
Hello Bernie will checking the amperage of the bad fuel injector show the state of health of the injector if its having high or low amps to operate the injector looking at it through the scope? or the pressure drop test is the best way to test injectors?
Hash on the right side of the burn line like the one in the vedio indicates internal to combustion chamber like an injecter...i was hoping he would've snap the throttle while looking at secondary ignition wave form ...hes an awsome tech by far..
great video as always but why no new videos . pleas keep them coming
That's a smart strategy when you think about it , if the cylinder is missing for whatever reason in some cases unburned fuel will be in the exhaust. The oxygen sensors will read the rich condition and the fuel trims will remove some fuel ,this will cause the remaining healthy cylinders to have a lean mixture making the engine run even even worse . This strategy helps the fuel trims to work correctly for the healthy cylinders and the effected cylinder to just pump air . German engineering is pretty sophisticated .
Amazed that 1997 tech by Benz was good enough to accurately detect cyl misfire and programming was sophisticated enuf to shut down the injector!! Wonder what other cars from this vintage do this?? Beamers?? VW?? What about GM and Ford from mid to late '90s ... quite common for cars built in last decade of course.
How much do you want to fly over to Sweden and diagnose my 1989 420 SEL vibration/misfire at idle. 3 shops have failed so far. Stumped 🤔
Another great video Bernie Thanks for sharing.

If you REALLY want an oscilloscope buy an Mp408 to learn with. And for your scan tool just buy any Bi-Directional tool that can read all modules. I have the Snap-On Ethos but honestly that was a waste of money. A lot of Autel devices are just as capable for a 1/4 the price.
How can MBZ tech stated cyl#6, they could have done a leak down tested without a scope for mechanical problem.
Magnificent tip 16:32 👍🏁🏁🏁
So now is what I wanna do…best Bernie line ever.
if the computer says cylinder 6 misfire how the computer shut off injector number 5 instead number 6
This guy is insane..
Back in the olden days injector cleaning was common.
People, if you go in the description of the video, it tells description, availability and cost of everything he used.....
Why dont you show the solution part? You could do injector test a few times not once to be sure.

Im curious how the pcm was shutting down injector #5 if it wasn’t setting a dtc for cylinder #5 misfire-- infact had dtc for cylinders 4 & 6 - why weren’t those injectors commanded off ???????

But Bernie said the other shop was chasing a cylinder 6 misfire-- and even if the other shop caused a misfire DTC -- you would think the car would’ve been running on four cylinders when Bernie started working on it ( ie cylindef 4&6 deactivated)

@@Lambros_Stefaneas oh ok - that makes sense - do you know is that Mercedz Benz strategy particularly? -- I know when I first discovered this feature on German vehicles… A BMW specifically… can’t remember the specific year make and model… But it was Many many years ago… The injector was disabled, as long as the code was present--in other words, I replaced a -bad coil, and still had a dead hole due to the injector being disabled… Which was the case, until I actually went in and cleared the misfire DTC- that’s what had me so confused about this video -- but your explanation makes perfect sense

@@victorhernandez3102 VAG GROUP is the same, and I think all the German manufacturer (at least the latest models). For the rest, I have not check it, but I suppose on French cars the same, because I have replace a coil(quick check to see if the coil is the problem)without clearing the code ,and work out(but to be honest, I don't know if they shout down the injector ).I wouldn't surprise if all the European cars is the same. For American cars, no idea, I am not working on them, because were I am no many American cars, and for Asian cars, don't know either, I have not seen a Asian car to misfiring for years 😅😇

What kind of shop can't do a simple compression check. Know wonder. Let's look at data. Always be careful. Yes they shut injector off or ignition off.yes if shop could fix it. Must be some asshat Garage. Yanilla effect on .I can by ear if the engine has good compression just hold pedal to floor and crank over engine..
Simple work if you are a good mechanic. Find the fault and verify why and what cause.
Any mechanic that doesn’t understand that Mercedes cuts power to the coil from the ecm upon misfire. Should not be working on Mercedes
Great diagnosis and explanation . If more of these shops would recognize their limitations and call someone on your level in , they would do a lot less damage . The other alternative is getting training and equipment . How do they mis diagnose , cost customers huge sums of money and NOT fix the problems ?
If they put an engine in and used same injectors… same issue. So much misdiagnosis in the business. Lots of techs need more up to date training.
As a brother advice do not throw your money away by buying their worthless scanner, I wish I didnt buy it from them, it was the first mistake which I made in my life I regret for that be aware not to do so I warned you just for sake of God.
