1997 BMW F650ST budget adventure bike build

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Got a few bucks shy of $2500 into this baby, made it into a budget adventure / dual sport bike. Bike cost $1450, spent about a grand on spare wheelset (250), dirt tires (120 incl. HD tubes), engine guards (230), bash plate (125), tank bag (60), hand guards(50) and other odds and ends (200 or so). Weighs in at 453 lbs wet unloaded. 50 mpg, 95 mph flat out.

Being a rider of older bikes myself I've noticed quite a lot of bike snobbery (they won't talk to me) from riders of the top spec new stuff. Love the idea of this being practically as good as something newer, and without need for rider modes! Good work.

Great machine they are - that voltage regulator relocation from under the seat to somewhere into an airstream is essential - i cooked three of them before i twigged. If youve got one of these and it wont rev at all all of a sudden and its running rough as guts - thats what it will be. My machine responded beautifully to a gearing change - up a couple of teeth on the rear sprocket to get it to rev a bit more - different bike. As far as i know the front wheel on this model is 19 inch standard. I fitted a Hagon replacement rear shock when it became obvious the original was past its used by date - sweet. Cheers!

I had this bike as my first bike when I passed my test. I took the front mug guard off n put a dirt bike mud guard up under the head light area. It looked nuts.

Nicely done. Only reservation I'd have is front tyre clearance? If you pick up a rock or get mud build up it could catapult the guard.

So that non running f650gs you mentioned - what kind of engine maintenance should be expected on one if those for 50k miles? Looking at picking one up for pretty cheap that need some work. Great 2 videos on the ST btw

Great vid, Lots of stuff crammed in, might have to watch it again! I'm finally sorting a Freebee I was given a few years back. Just gotta get the Spragg Clutch issue sorted first. But for the cost I got it for (Free!), I might go past My Tight-Ass habbits and just spend the $1200 on parts i was quoted (do you have any input/advice in that btw??). Nice 'collection' too. Shame u don't have anything I need...GPz600 & 900, z750 & 650, Sr500, CB450's, etc. Unless you have a spare standard f650 headlight??? Anyways, Have Fun n RSOT >:)

Take out the 5kOhm resistors of the ngk plugcaps. The iridiums are a resistor plug, so your adding resistance to the ignition circuit. (weaker spark)

Nice vid. Wish you show how you ride it off-road. I have no experience and own a '01 G650 GS with Dakar rims and some upgrades and I think it would do great in experience hands. As for me - the bike can do more than my skill so I had no problems whatsoever other than fear :D
