It’s called a reverse torx bit. Auto Zone, Advance Auto Parts, etc will have them.

thanks for the informative video. I have to replace head gasket on my 97 TJ and I'm really hoping that is all that's wrong with it. Pretty easy to take everything off. Thanks again.

Fast forward to the future, I just learned that Lowe's no longer carries their Kobalt tool line. They replaced it with Craftsman. So if you need a Craftsman tool, you can now get it at the Lowe's stores--in person.

I’m not sure what’s wrong with my gf’s 97 tj. But we are getting some rough idle, hard crank, and she told me today, she can’t get over 60 mph. Ur video was extremely informative. I know head gaskets are not easy. But u made it look smooth. Great tips . I will definitely have this video in my favorites for when I do this project.

Well, I do not have a compression kit. We do not have any odd exhaust coming out. So, the problem is finding the problem. Possible broken valve spring, piston ring, compression from valves, injectors. Etc etc. I do know I am going to replace the valve cover, go some leakage there. Then start with basic deduction. I’m still keeping ur video thou, you did a great job mate

So mine does not have water in the oil or vice versa. It does run rough, overheat quickly, spark knock, and there’s extreme pressure in the cooling system after just a few minutes. I’m guessing a bad head gasket is blowing compression into the cooling system.

How many hours labour would you estimate a garage would take? I have a TJ that is loosing coolant and exploring what it might be...

If it was a head gasket, you would have white smoke billowing out the tail pipe. I'd imagine your leak is water pump, or more likely, a leaking thermostat housing. That said, most shops have a book with standard hours for every job and they charge per that. Doesn't matter if it takes 30 minutes, if the book says 5 hours, you get charged for 5 hours.

when breaking bolts loose use no extension or the shortest extension possible you lose torque with a long extension makes it harder on you and easier to slam your knuckles into something when it does break loose with a long extension

+Zachary Davis Just a precaution to make sure there is no cross contamination left over from the initial head gasket blow.

How did you get to that bottom alternator bracket bolt on the back?? And will that keep the head from separating? I’ve gotten all 10 cylinder head bolts off and I can’t get it to budge. Can’t tell if it’s seized or if I’m missing something...

IIRC, I used extensions and u-joints to get that bolt off. I could be wrong but I wouldn't have removed the bracket if it didn't need to come off. Please let me know if it's still giving you issues.

MustangsbyMatt Thanks for responding. I haven’t had a chance to fool with it yet, but I’ll check it out in the next day or two and let you know. That’s the only thing I haven’t been able to remove, so hopefully that’s it.

MustangsbyMatt I was able to get the bracket off today, but I don’t think that’s what was holding me up. I ended up prying it gently with a crowbar and it broke free. Thanks man!

put everything back together again and my engine has trouble cranking over and black smoke is coming out of the exhaust. could this have been from the push rods?

Joey Planz Did you make sure to reinstall the fuel injector harnesses in the same injectors? Also, check the charge on the battery.

Joey Planz As long as you put everything back in the same place and torqued everything to spec, the mechanicals should be fine. Black smoke could be a symptom of a bad upstream O2 sensor.

pretty sure they went on in the right spots but is there a way to check this out? battery has been sitting for about a month outside of the jeep

Joey Planz Throw a can of SeaFoam in the tank and replace the O2 sensor. Did you replace the spark plugs and or cap/rotor?

How did you know it was just the gasket? And not a cracked block or head?

You don't until you disassemble and inspect it. I took the head to a clmach) machine shop for inspection and flatness. The block looked fine. You have to get in there and find out. That's the only way.

That sucks. After only a year, your head gasket failed. What brand was that?

@@SeriouslyAwesome It was more than a year, I'm not sure exactly but yeah, it sucked. That missing piece probably got burned up in the combustion chamber and expelled out the exhaust or it was in the coolant or oil. Both of which were changed. Take no chances.

I would have sprayed them down with brake cleaner and wiped them with rags. Then two back-to-back oil changes once everything was done.

@@alexpodolsky3245 Not rude at all, it's a perfectly valid question. I run diesel oil because this engine design is about 1000 years old. There are special additives in regular Rotella that just aren't present in gasoline engine oils. They help protect the engine block better. Everyone uses the oil they feel most comfortable with and this works for me. I did a ton of research before I decided on this oil.
