1997-2001 CRV Honda timing belt water pump replacement fix

This is generally the same job for all B series twin cam engines. B16 (1.6L) B17 (1.7L) B18 (1.8L) B20 (2.0L) Civic, Acura Integra, and CRV. from 1994-2001 I do believe GSR (GS-R), and type R have different length belts, and more teeth on the water pump. correct me if I'm wrong. 1995 1996 1998 1999 2000 94 95 96 97 98 99 00 01 removal, & installation

    I just did a 2001 CRV, the old belt was replaced in 2010 and still looked good ( Crv spend whole live in Denver, Colorado), Also if if you use the pin holes (as described @ 11:54) , then the cams are aligned and will not move. I used to two drill bits to align and hold the cams in proper alignment .

    Wow, haven't watched the whole thing yet but I like your editing style - just cutting to the chase. Your experience definitely shows, it's impressive. I can do basic maintenance but I'd never find all those different bolts or know which parts have to be 'persuaded' out the way. I have acquired a 1996 CRV, a friends actually but he's stuck overseas. It drives well and doesn't overheat but it IS leaking small drops of oil and coolant after heat cycling. I'd thought this wagon was had it but I'm coming to understand it might be as simple as a valve cover gasket and a new water pump (the coolant leaks to the side where the belts are - not under the radiator). That's why I'm wanting to see what's involved in water pump replacement. Thanks for taking the time, I've some studying to do!

    Never put RTV in O-ring seals. When it dries, your O-ring will be stuck and useless and you could have leaks. Use silicone O-ring grease. It will allow the O-ring to squish and seal. That is what O-rings are for. RTV is for gaskets.

  • @RustBeltAuto

    @RustBeltAuto

    4 жыл бұрын

    It works fine. You just need to bolt it down before it dries. I agree that you really don't need it, unless there are some good imperfections in the sealing surfaces, but I did it anyways. I have had siliconed rubber o-rings leak before, but never one with a little ultra grey on it to fill up the voids. The stuff cleans off easy, and I didn't intend to re-use the gasket either. Thanks.

    Another tip for this vid is After fitting the timming belt and tensioner , i always turn the engine over 2 cycles by ✋ . If for any reason it jumps a tooth you wont bend a valve switching the engine on. Also as the cam cover is off , itll be worth checking valve clearances make sure valves are in spec and at least check for tight ones.

  • @RustBeltAuto

    @RustBeltAuto

    5 жыл бұрын

    I cannot disagree. You need to put the washer, and harmonic balancer on before turning it over, or the belt will go out of alignment, and possibly fall off. I always do give rockers a quick wiggle. So I check most of them for free anyways. I have done so many, and am probably a little over confident. Thanks for watching.

  • @ianjgd

    @ianjgd

    Correct. Spin it over. Check the valve clearances, these are manually adjusted which is a very dated arrangement. Go back three teeth to tension is faster than applying pressure to the tensioner. Clean it well before you start.

    I can't seem to get the drive side of the belt tight. I align the 2 cam gears, place a drill bit in each pin hole to lock TDC. Begin routing the belt on the drive side but I can't get it super tight to go around the crankshaft gear - just can't stretch the belt enough (unless I want the cam shaft gears to rotate a little) to make it around the teeth so I end up with a little slack on that side when I finish routing the rest of the belt. Problem when I start to rotate the crankshaft I see the belt between the 2 camshaft gears slacken and tighten as I spin the engine. It actually gets pretty loose in some positions. So the drive side of the belt is too loose but the tensioner side seems too tight. Just the opposite of what RBA is showing in the video. Seems to stay in timing but I don't think the belt slack between the camshaft gears should get as loose as I am seeing. Lost count how many times I have tried to get this right but end up with the same result. What am I doing wrong?

    It seems like most people making these timing belt videos are guessing when setting the tension of the belt and it seems to be working out fine for people. If anyone feels like doing it the proper way: after the belt is in place with the timing mark still lined up, rotate the camshafts three teeth CCW and tighten the tensioner bolt. This should put the appropriate tension/slack in the belt and take the guess work out of manually setting the tension.

  • @RustBeltAuto

    @RustBeltAuto

    4 жыл бұрын

    It can still be too loose if you do that. I do believe there is a belt tension gauge that nobody ever uses for that. There is also a smart phone app people use that allows you to read the frequency of the thing when you pluck it like a guitar string. I like what I do.

    I will give you little advise you can use electric impact wrench to remove the cranking bolt so you don't bent the valves Have piece of mind and do it the professional way . When installing the timing belt you should have the diagram and look for the direction of the marks on pulies .

  • @RustBeltAuto

    @RustBeltAuto

    5 жыл бұрын

    Sometimes an impact doesn't work. That crank bolt can be too tight once and a while. Crankshaft holder tool is made to do it the way I did it. You will not bend valves if the timing belt is on it. If the belt is not on or broke, you need to turn the crank about 1/8-1/4 turn from zero to make sure the pistons are half down, and will not hit valves in order to line up the camshaft pulleys, being careful to not smash the intake and exhaust valves together. Valves usually bend when the belt jumps teeth, and all pulleys are still turning, or when the belt breaks when it is running, or when someone puts the crankshaft at TDC, and turns cam pulleys, or uses an impact wrench on camshaft bolts at TDC. Thanks for watching!

    You must remove the valve cover to line it up correctly. There are tiny marks at the front and rear on the cam sprockets. Remove the plugs and spin it a few times to load the new belt properly. At the start the camshaft bolt is often impossible to get off without the service tool to lock it. An impact wrench or a huge lever is often needed to crack it open. These are built like a motorcycle engine so go slowly or you'll damage things fairly easily.

  • @RustBeltAuto

    @RustBeltAuto

    3 жыл бұрын

    You won't need to take it apart. You're supposed to put the pulley on it, and rotate it in order to make sure the belt is aligned properly, The tensioner is on the left side, so if you rotate it clockwise, the tensioner (driven side) should always be loose. The trick is to make sure the cams are not rotating towards each other, or pulling slack out of the driven side when you tighten the tensioner down. The cam lobes always force the cams in either direction, unless they are in a neutral position.

    They didn’t come with silicone on the water pump from factory, so why would you added it. Just saying.

    Makes up for any corrosion, and imperfections. Subaru puts it on just about everything. Probably doesn't need it, but I do it anyways.

    And thats where self exspirence leval is at lol if theirs enough surface erea to use sealant as a back up gasket absolutely do it! Last thing you want is to rebuild an engine and finds the new seal drips oil-water. That sealant will save a load of headache if.

    Yeah, we don't want to tear it apart the first time, sure as hell don't want to so it twice due to an easily prevented leak

    The water pump has an O-ring. So, when it dries, the rtv will just interfere with the O-ring and cause it to leak. O-rings are designed to squish. Put silicone grease on the O-ring and it will outlast the water pump and certainly the timing belt. If you must put rtv on every god damned thing, be careful to keep it outside of the O-ring and its mating surface. It won't hurt anything out there.

    Nobody really. AISIN kits are online only as far as I know. The only water pump for a Honda from a parts store I would trust is from the Napa Altrom line. It should be an NPW Japanese pump. Everyone else sells Chinese pumps. Gates, and Mitsuboshi belts are best. The pulley is good from anywhere IMHO.
