One of my FAVORITE races of all time. Michael Andrertti doing his thing, Gordon being a maniac and blowing his engine on purpose, Greg Moore's comments, and all of those manufactures on that glorious track. The new cars might be close to the speed of these (20 years!!) Old cars but they can't beat the way the old v8 Turbos launched them selves off the corners.

Those were the days... 85k spectators and half the track wasn't even accessible to them I was there but had totally forgotten what all went down that day. Typical champcar race of the era when 10 drivers could have won the thing at any given weekend.

Peter Burke some one should have told that to Tony George that in 1994. That 25/8 rule at the 96 Indy 500 almost killed the sport.

@@robminmonaca It did, EVERY fan agrees this was the best. I still enjoy Imdycar but now it's alot more casual. No way near as interesting now. Those cars featured multiple chassis, engine manufacturers, AND tire manufacturers. Why? Because manufacturers new it was worth the investment, the series allowed for innovation and was a place for their engineers to stretch their legs and utilize their imagination now it's so spec that it doesn't really matter what badge is on the car.

I agree with that one of those were the days. The arrogance of Tony George killed CART, which was way better than the IRL he founded, he just sabotaged CART.

@@27ducatistoner I think there were more powerful guys behing T.George, like B.Ecclestone who really feared the IndyCars - they were threat to F1. F1 appearance in Indianapolis shows, some king of "reward". And at the end we see that all IRL ideas failed - ovals only schedule was abandonded. Foreign drivers were a lot... it was totally unnecessary, and seeing official champions of 1996 "B.Calkins\S.Sharp", just sad...

@@marisgertans2438 I have, somewhere, an Autosport magazine that has an article in that in 92-93, Bernie/Max feared with Mansell going to Indycar, he'd take a lot of F1 fans with him. Which did happen, essentially, Bernie and Max, the way the article was written, were afraid of Indycar being more popular than F1, which in 93 alone you could argue it was. 93-96 you could make that argument too, F1 didn't run ovals at all, hadn't since 1960 when the Indy 500 stopped being counted as part o the F1 championship

Best race I've ever seen at Road America, and I've been going there for 50 years. You can't imaging the electric atmosphere that weekend. Indycar was a huge battle every weekend, with a bunch of talented drivers all trying to make their mark. Roger, Carl, Jim, Mario, Carl Hogan and Dan Gurney were all there, just like in the old days. Then you had Walther Payton, PLN, Letterman and Herb Kohler (in the Penske pit at the checkered flag). It was so crowded, I missed most of the action because I couldn't move. I picked my spot by drivers left at T13 and stayed there. I was right above the Gugelmin Blundell crash. When Unser Jr. blew up at the end, the crowd cheered so loudly that I couldn't hear the engines.

I remember being very bored with all the cautions, and switching to the IRL race. These races are much better on youtube, with all the commercials taken out. 11:45 Walter Payton and Paul Newman 18:30 David Letterman. This is the interview of the year 27:20 Green 47:45 Christian Fittipaldi passes the pace car while it's still on the track. No call 54:00 Two spectacular incidents right in a row 1:01:43 Crucial replay 1:07:20 Three cars out all at once 1:12:45 Zanardi's penalty for entering closed pits is that he'll have to do a stop and go under green 1:15:45 Wait, no, actually Zanardi can just go to the back of the line. They're making the rules up as they go along. 1:22:10 Another new rule for 1996: drive through penalties. I always thought this was a good idea. Who's to say whether you came to a complete stop or not during a stop and go. 1:25:40 When your car breaks down, get off the track! 1:27:45 Greg Moore interview 1:31:25 A really wild pit stop sequence with an unsafe release and some near misses. The crew members nearby don't have helmets. 1:36:10 Heavy equipment in the sand trap during green. These races are terrifying in retrospect 1:41:10 Jon Beekhuis says Robby Gordon is trying to blow up his engine 1:48:00 Robby Gordon directly insults Ford. Also gives the most accurate take on a prior incident. And then another Ford breaks down. To be fair, this race also featured engine failures from Mercedes and Toyota 1:56:55 Wild finish

The most ridiculous thing is that current IndyCar series list Buzz Calkins and Scott Sharp as co-champions in 1996. It is atrocious. Because IRL championship in 1996 was "pseudo" championship, with just 3 races... simply wrong. I would understand, for example, IRL 1998, and onwards, but 1996? Jimmy Vasser was IndyCar champion! but overall - until ~ 2002 CART was premier series in USA.

Shockingly poor driving all around. Almost as bad as today's IndyCar, when we're guaranteed a first-turn wreck on every green on any street or tight road circuit. A total joke. Compare to the period just before this one, the Golden Era of CART '85-'95, where the drivers were aggressive but of the highest caliber and professionalism and could be heading 4 wide into a turn and get through single file. This was amateur hour stuff. And little Al was told not to over-rev his Ilmor by Mario Illien himself (halk owner w Penske and designer of the motor) and did anyway....and exactly as he was told it would, it blew up. Can't blame him he was desperate for a win. And getting rid of Sully as color commentator was the dumberst move ever, he was awesome. TV executives went downhill in the post-split era too, just like drivers and American open wheel racing lol...
