Richie Hearn and Michel Jourdain Jr. were the two drivers in this race who started the Indy 500 a month later as rookies. They later finished 1-2 in the Las Vegas 500K race five months later and were the only two drivers on the lead lap at the end.

Early-mid '90's CART/Indy Car was the best auto racing series on the planet, especially when Firestone took a massive development effort and came back after two decades out of racing. Tires are so critical in racing and Firestone pushed Goodtyear to up their game and by '96-'97 had passed them by with an incredible racing tire product. By the late '90's Firestones were so superior the only way Goodyear could keep CART clients was by paying them. And as we all know Firestone took over as exclusive supplier and remain so today. I'd say their gamble to come back to Indy Car paid off!

The juxtaposition of discussing the future California Speedway right before speaking to Greg Moore dredges up a lot of sad memories of a career cut short by a very unfortunate tragedy. He shouldn't have driven with his hand injured like that at such treacherous speeds in that race. Ultimately it was his decision alone to get in that day

I’m glad you guys upload what seem to be very good masters of these old races, and they look to be de-interlaced (at least from what I can see on my phone screen) but why stretch the video to 16:9? Better than cropping it, but honesty I’d rather just live with the black bars on the side rather than have everything look squashed.

@@de-fault_de-fault Yeah. I hate when anyone crops or stretches old footage. I recently watched some early 90s F1 footage in Japan. I didn't know they had HD video then. Muse Hi-Vision LD, which I think is 1035i. What a treat. Wish that was the standard everywhere back then. Modern Indy and F1 are a far cry from what they used to be hence why I watch classic 90s and early 2000s racing. I was at the Long Beach GP last year and they had the 70s and 80s F1 cars - historic racing. The year before that was IMSA GTP. Awesome stuff.

Zanardi still wasn't used to the American mentality where backmarkers fight to stay ahead of the leaders instead of letting them past. The same thing happened at Vancouver. Without those, he wins the title as a rookie.

Alex Zanardi certainly was entertaining in the late 90s, but that move on rahal was on a wing and pray. Felt sorry for Greg Moore, i think Christian Fillipardi cut him up, guess that's racing for you. Gil De Ferran really unlucky, drove a commanding race.

Sully was so great at color commentary, he and Paul needed to get their rhythm down but once they started to click Danny added a great fresh perspective. I loved the Page-Bobby 'for certain sure' Unser-Sam Posey trio, probably the best ever, but the endless Bobby-Sam bickering was getting tired, and I think they finally refused to work together any longer such was their mutual animosity (Bobby being banished to turn 2 at Indy was hilarious.) Paul and Danny (along with the legendary pit team of Jack Arute and Gary Gerrold and Jan B) were developing into a great team. Not sure how long it lasted. Contrast this era with the utter cheese fest, carnival barker style broadcast team and production quality that began in the 00's and continues today that's so cringe it's embarrassing. '95 was the end of the golden era of Indy Car/CART racing , but '96 had it''s moments, and this broadcast team really made it come alive. A better time, in every way.... EDIT: the sound mix was off a lot, many times the engines drowned out the announcers lol...
