1996 Saab 9000 CSE 2.3 Turbo Review (550 miles later) - Buy it, Try it, Sell it with Geoff Buys Cars

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I drove my Saab 9-5 Estate to Glasgow then got a train to Inverness and came home in this bad boy... my Saab 9000 2.3 Turbo. Here's the review.
Geoff Buys Cars is an automotive adventure through old cars. I buy cars to review for KZread, then sell them on. Sometimes I make a profit and document the journey, sometimes I give them away in £10 ‘Geoff Specials’. It started with a canoe and it’s taken every possible diversion, but i’ll get to that Porsche eventually… Right now I’m just enjoying all these old cars, it’s gotten to be a bit like Pokemon. Gotta catch ‘em all! Seen a potential Geoff car? Get in touch, I’ll buy it.

I had a 9000 in school. Absolutely loved it. Was fast. Sleek. Never broke down. I had it maintained at a Swedish motor car shop. The owner of the shop said if I ever sell it, let him know. So when I finished school, I sold it to the owner. Still has it to this day.

im from sweden where these cars were first manufactured, my parnets got a yr 95 model, sold it to a family member after a couple years and then bought it back in 2015, im now 16 and next in line as i get my drivers license in a couple years, and i can confirm the seats are AMAZINGLY soft. Theyre probably my fvaorite part to be honest, i love the general vibe of the car too, it feels spacious but still cozy in a way.

Had a 9000 for years. Put an air bleed in to increase turbo response. My friend Steve bought an ex police armed response saab 9000. Kevlar in the doors engine chipped by saab with a much larder turbo. Around 440 hp. Magic.

Swedish Saab, manufactured in Finland (Uusikaupunki, Valmet automotive). During the development of the Saab 9000 in Finland, a V8 engine was secretly planned for it (it was also possible to get it with twin turbos) and, as I recall, 5 prototypes were produced, of which, as far as I know, only one remains in their own car museum. WHAT A BEAST!!! The same factory also produced the legendary Opel Calibra, as well as some Mercedes-Benz and Porche models, just to name a few... :)

I once brought a 5 year old Saab 9000s with one owner for £2,500 and full service history. Full leather and similar dashboard to your one, it was the most luxerious and best performance car I have ever driven. Now I need to find another, but will not get another bargain like that. What is even more remarkable is cars was a sideline for Saab, main production was jet fighters.

Nice one Geoff! I'm the 3rd and longest owner of a lovely '94, V6 9000 Griffin down in Melbourne, Aus. This car remains a truly solid daily driver in a classic design (Giugiaro) and seems to be looking even better with age. As in the UK, it is completely undervalued and so I'm probably keeping it another 20 years!

G'day mate! Im in Toowoomba. Currently looking at either a 9000 CD or a OG 9-5 Aero... problem is 9000 is available now, and 9-5 isnt available for another month. My NG 9-3 did its head after catastrophic cooling system failure. Love the 9-5 Aero and likely to hold out for that... but my god the 9000 is a cool car. And those Red Top B234 engines are epic. What's your favourite thing and least favourite thing about the 9000?

Geoff; DON'T sell it. That's a special car! As an owner of 2 Saab's I am not jealous lol. If you sell it you will regret it, and those engines are bullet proof. They have a savage midrange because Saab figured overtaking performance is more useful than outright acceleration. Those engineers knew a thing or two 🙂

My brother has been a Saab lover for years now and I’ve always knocked him for it until recently, he’s had a espresso green 9-5 for years now and we just got it running this past spring and I fell in love on my first drive in it, the 2.3 turbo was just a different experience from other turbo luxury sedans of the period, I had been wanting one since then and wasn’t able to find a clean manual Saab until recently when I decided to trade my 1993 Honda Civic Si in the sought after OEM Aztec green metallic color for a 1994 Saab 9000 Cs hatchback and I’m extremely happy with the deal, it’s a fantastic car and I cannot wait to put the stock 9-5 turbo setup on it so it’s not n/a anymore 😁😁

Its a CSE, sunroof, cruise control, climate control, heated seats, trip computer and extra audio amplifier. Cant wait to drive it. :) Paid 300 euro's for it.. I'd love to see you in a Saab 900 turbo and your thoughts on it. A strangely delightful looking beast with a long snout. Driving it was akin to a ww2 fighter plane with its almost u shaped windscreen and narrow cockpit. It was built like a tank and almost as heavy which the mpg varified but for 1979 when it came out it was a flyer. To exit the car you needed to have mastered the school track and field hurdle event cause the door sills were massive. The thing that was a deal breaker for me was the fact that the engine was put in arse about face with the timing belt up against the bulkhead. The thought of doing a timing belt on the thing sent shivers cascading through my toolbox. All my mates back In the day were either hankering after Escort RS turbos or the 900 turbos. Me? I settled for 3.0 and 2.8i capris but then again I was never your average hooligan. The 900 turbos were a TRUELY love car of the time.

I did Geoff's thought experiment about travelling to Le Mans, for real. I had to take pity on an Audi TT and pull in to let it past. Geoff is also right about powering around corners. The lift-off oversteer, if you go into a corner too fast, is savage.

G'day Richard 👋 May I please ask you a question? I'm tossing up between either a 1997 Saab 9000 CD with 120k kms, vs a 2001 Saab 9-5 Aero with 220k kms. The 9-5 Aero has been meticoulsly maintained by a fellow saab enthusiast and wrenched on by a lifelong Euro mechanic. Car is to replace my broken NG 9-3 Linear. Both with Auto box and 2.3 Turbo. Im leaning towards the 9-5 Aero, as it's in Esspreso Black, and I know its history (plus, it's an Aero). The 9000 i know very little about. Wondering if you might give your brief 2 cents worth on the 9000 vs the 9-5 please?

I have an Aero Auto, It plays well into to the Luxury feel of the car, because it was a luxury car, it was more expensive than an equivalent BMW 5 series for example and had 'Higher' spec. It can also easily be chipped to be as quick as manual. However, you don't always catch it in the correct gear and revs to kick you back in your seat. If you're buying on for the performance, you want a manual, which can also be upgraded further because the gearbox can handle slightly more torque.

@ColdPetRat2.99 I think I do - don't get me wrong, the Alfa is lovely to drive and well built - nearly 118,000 miles on it and not a squeak or rattle in the car, plus I get compliments wherever I park it. I have always wanted a Saab 9000 for about the last 3 decades, as I have always liked the look of them. But I guess you fancy this car as much as I do. 😎 Btw, I have owned 2 Saab 9-5's - one of them was an Aero, and always enjoyed surprising BMW's etc on the road, so to me, this car is quite the sleeper, as the number plate to most drivers will mean old and slow!

@ColdPetRat2.99 I know they can be a lot of time and money, but I still would like one of these.

That's kind of the point. Saab toyed with the idea of a V8 (to appeal to the US market) and made a prototype but in the end decided what's the point when you can get the same performance (or greater) from a smaller, lighter, more economical engine with a snail bolted to it. My 2003 Saab 9-5 Aero (Stage 3 tune) never leaves me wanting more power. Best car I've ever owned.

From experience I can tell you the ACC is highly unreliable and basically unfixable at this point. My butt was very impressed with the seats tho.

Your car was originally a 2.3t. So 175bhp. A stage 2 remap from myself takes them to 253bhp which is about as hard as you want to push the T25 turbo before it will fail quickly. The acceleration stats you talk of referred to the 9000 Aero manual with TD04 turbo which generates a lot more torque at low rpm compared to the T25 turbo. Thesaabclinic DOT co DOT uk.
