The announcers during this broadcast mentioned Tom Osborne averaged 10 wins a year. What most folks don't realize is the 2 years BEFORE he was the head coach at Nebraska he was the offensive coordinator and the team won back-to-back National Championships then, too. That gives him 5 Titles.

I'm pretty sure most folks know that Tom Osborne was Devaney's offensive coordinator. . .

Not just the out of bounds play either. By the way, there were two way out of bounds catches on that drive. Later on though, former Penn State Tight end Kirk Bowman freely admitted to having trapped the ball that supposedly won the game in Happy Valley over the Huskers in 1982. This was years later when he was a Houston Oiler in 1987 or 1988. A team that included former Huskers 1983 Heisman Winner Mike Rozier, Dean Stinekuler, Jamie Williams and Allen Lyday. He told Mike, "Yeah I trapped it!" Mike's back to back Pro Bowl seasons were in 87 and 88. But remember that 1987 was a strike shortened season with five weeks of Scab teams. Mike was leading the NFL in Rushing prior to the Strike. For people who bash Rozier's injury plagued Pro career. At his average for the season if he had played a full slate minus the strike he would have gained over 1,400 yards. Not bad on a passing team. He also was the leading rusher in the Pro Bowl after the '87 season. Playing out of position at Full-Back to the Raiders Marcus Allen as the Running Back. @@jasonc6812

Man, what a frustrating and sloppy game. This is where the stats definitely don't tell the story. Ahman Green and DeAngelo Evans both with some amazing looking runs, but have very little to show for it due to penalties and several tackles for losses. No telling how good DeAngelo might have been if not for the injuries. Two torn hamstrings at the end of the '96 season that kept him sidelined for the National title team in in 1997. Redshirted, then looked to be back in 1998. Blew a knee out right away and eventually transferred. He did have a big Senior year at Emporia State. Around 1300 yards.

My how things have changed. Nebraska was good back then, one of the national powerhouses as a member of the Big 8. I don't think Hanspard was as good as he was said to be.

If Frost can inspire the current Huskers to make other teams fear them, he'll have brought Nebraska back

Yeah, he had a couple big games early that year and cooled off. He even came out early and sat Atlanta's bench.

Great punt return by Damon Benning! Wow, to bad he didn't score on that paly though. People would still be talking about it. Damon's son Caleb is committed to Nebraska in 2024.

Tomich is a head hunter. Good luck finding a game in which he played where he didn't hit an opponent above the shoulders at least once.
